Chapter 5 - THE BOND THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

Kael's POV

The white stag dies fast.

Kael's wolf brings it down after a brutal chase through the forest. They've been hunting for less than an hour but his body is already soaked in victory and blood. The other Alphas are still tracking the animal deeper into the woods, their howls echoing through the night. But Kael caught it. Kael killed it. That's all his wolf cares about.

He stands over the kill with his muzzle buried in its neck, tasting dominance, feeling the rush of power that comes with being the strongest predator in the forest.

Then something hits him.

A scent so strong it cuts through everything else. Through the blood on his fur. Through the adrenaline in his veins. Through the primal satisfaction of the hunt.

Omega. Distressed. Terrified.

And something about that scent is wrong because it's not just any Omega. It's familiar in a way his human mind doesn't understand but his wolf recognizes completely.

It's hers.

The scent carries ash and burned flesh and panic so intense that it makes his entire body go rigid. Kael's head comes up from the dead stag and his amber eyes glow brighter in the darkness.

The hunt doesn't matter anymore.

Nothing matters except getting back to pack lands. Now.

His wolf doesn't waste time with a howl. He just runs. Fast as lightning. Faster than any other wolf in this territory because he's spent years being the deadliest thing in the pack. Trees blur past. The forest floor flies beneath his paws.

And underneath everything is a single thought repeated over and over. Find her. Protect her. Claim her.

The thought comes from somewhere deep, somewhere primal, somewhere he doesn't have a name for.

He explodes out of the forest onto pack lands and sees the servants' wing burning. Flames climb the walls. Smoke fills the air. But he doesn't stop. Doesn't look at the fire or the guards trying to contain it. His senses are locked on one thing.

Her.

She's lying on the grass near the burning building, naked and bleeding and holding a small child against her chest. She's burned. Her skin is singed. Her paws are blackened with fire.

She saved someone.

In the middle of a burning building, while everyone else was running for their lives, she went deeper into the flames and saved a child.

And now she's lying there like she doesn't realize she's broken something inside him that he never knew was there.

Kael's wolf comes to a dead stop about twenty feet away from her.

For one second their eyes meet.

Violet meets amber.

Omega meets Alpha.

And Mira's whole body goes tense like she realizes exactly what she's looking at. She realizes that the most dangerous wolf in the pack is staring at her like she's oxygen and he's been suffocating.

She runs.

Just turns and limps away, trying to create distance between them, still cradling the child. Her burned paws slow her down but her instinct is correct. She should be running. She should be terrified.

She should be doing anything except making Kael's need to follow unbearable.

His wolf doesn't even hesitate.

The chase lasts maybe thirty seconds.

Kael closes the distance in three strides because he's built for this, built for speed and dominance and taking what he needs. He slams into her and pins her to the ground with his massive body, her small gray wolf frame disappearing underneath him.

She struggles. She tries to snap at him. She tries to roll away.

Nothing works.

His jaws clamp down on her scruff and everything in the world narrows to this single point. Her scent. Her racing heartbeat. Her violet eyes meeting his with defiance and terror mixed together.

The bond snaps into place like lightning striking through his veins.

It's not gradual. It's not soft. It's violent and overwhelming and absolute. One second he's two separate beings and the next second he's only whole when she's underneath him.

His wolf knows. Knows with certainty that shakes him to his core.

Mate.

The word echoes through both their minds. He can feel it. Can feel her shock. Can feel her trying to reject what's happening even as her wolf recognizes him with a need that mirrors his own.

He bites down harder on her neck. Not to hurt. To mark. To tell every wolf in this territory that she belongs to him. That she's his and anyone who touches her dies.

Heat floods through his body. The bond is completing itself, burning through them both, creating connections he doesn't fully understand.

And then reality crashes back in.

Because the other Alphas are returning.

Kael feels them before he hears them. Thirty massive wolves crashing through the trees, following the scent of the stag he abandoned. Their howls fill the night as they realize their rival has brought down the kill without them.

They burst into the clearing and every single one of them stops dead.

Thirty Alphas. All unmated. All powerful. All watching in shock as Kael stands over a small gray Omega with his teeth on her neck, their bond blazing visible to anyone who knows how to look.

The implications hit them all at once.

Kael Stormborne has claimed a mate.

Not just any mate. An Omega mate. The lowest ranked member of the entire pack.

Silence crashes down like a physical thing. The Alphas are frozen, their brains trying to process what they're seeing. Kael's wolf stands over his claim with absolute certainty, daring anyone to challenge him.

Then someone screams.

It's a female voice. Familiar. Twisted with rage.

Seraphina bursts through the trees behind the other Alphas, her beautiful face contorted with fury and disbelief. She's supposed to be back at the pack house but she's here, witnessing everything, watching Kael's bond with the invisible Omega snap into place right in front of her eyes.

Her shriek of rage echoes through the forest and bounces off every tree.

"No. No no no. That's not possible."

Kael shifts back to human form while keeping one protective arm across Mira's small wolf body. He stands there naked and covered in blood and stag hair, and his amber eyes lock onto Seraphina with the promise of violence.

"Yes," he says, his voice carrying the weight of Alpha dominance. "It is."

The other Alphas are already backing away, understanding the hierarchy instantly. Kael is stronger. Kael has claimed. Kael will kill anyone foolish enough to challenge him over this.

But Seraphina just stands there, her eyes locked on Mira's small gray form, her hands clenching into fists.

And Kael realizes with sudden clarity that the hunt is over.

The real war is just beginning.
