Chapter 93 - Professor Oak: Could Ash Be the Chosen One of Fate?

[Ding! Mission Complete: Capture the Giant Onix of Mt. Miyacha.]

Reward:

×10 Rare Candies

Ash swapped Wartortle back to Professor Oak's Laboratory. If he suddenly sent the giant Onix back through the Poké Ball transfer system, Oak's lab probably wouldn't even be able to fit its massive body.

"Ash, that Onix you caught has excellent potential," Brock said with a cheerful smile.

An Alpha Pokémon would naturally have outstanding potential. After all, this Onix had been the ruler of Mt. Miyacha, with almost no Pokémon daring to approach its territory—aside from the unlucky Sandslash that had gotten stuck inside its body.

Giant Onix Status

Pokémon: Onix (Alpha)

Level: 52

Ability:Rock Head – Prevents recoil damage from the user's own moves

Potential:Elite Four Tier

Moves:

Dig

Iron Tail

Stealth Rock

Held Item: None

Friendship: 150

Not bad at all.

This was another major core member for Ash's team.

Its moveset was also strong. Perhaps because it had been suffering from the Sandslash stuck in its body, it hadn't used its more powerful techniques during the battle earlier. Otherwise, the fight might not have been so easy.

"Gyarados, you did great," Ash said as he returned it to its Poké Ball.

After that cross-level battle, Gyarados had successfully leveled up.

Ash silently thanked Elite Four Bruno for generously stepping aside. According to Brock, Bruno had gone off to capture other Onix in the mountains, planning to raise them properly.

He even said that when they met again someday, they could battle using their Onix.

Still… Ash was missing one key item.

A Metal Coat…

Maybe he could ask Professor Oak if he had one.

"Ash, what are you thinking about so seriously?" Misty asked.

She had handed Togepi to Pikachu for babysitting and leaned closer to look at Ash, who seemed lost in thought.

"Nothing," Ash replied.

Just as he was about to leave, Brock suddenly handed him a small notebook.

"Ash, since you've captured Onix and plan to train it as a main Pokémon, I have something that might help."

"It's my Onix training guide."

Brock truly lived up to his reputation as the group's caretaker.

Even though his battle strength wasn't quite on Ash's level, he had plenty of experience raising Onix. Sharing that knowledge could help Ash avoid many unnecessary mistakes.

"Thanks. I'll treat you guys to a big meal later," Ash said, accepting it.

The three members of the original trio had grown incredibly close.

Training manuals for Pokémon were extremely valuable. Ash's Charizard training manual had been key to improving Charizard's strength.

Many Gym families and Pokémon lineages possessed their own specialized training manuals for certain species, and these were rarely shared outside the family.

But Brock willingly gave his to a friend.

After exploring Mt. Miyacha a bit longer without finding the archaeological team, Ash brought everyone back to Professor Oak's Laboratory.

He still wanted to ask Oak where he could buy a Metal Coat—or whether Oak had one in storage.

Professor Oak's Laboratory

"Professor Oak, I'm here!" Ash called out as he pushed open the lab door.

Oak was still hunched over his experiments.

"Ash? What do you need?" Oak replied without looking up.

"Um… I wanted to ask if you have any Pokémon held items here," Ash said.

"I do. What are you looking for?"

Oak stopped working and finally looked up.

"Metal Coat."

"Why do you need that?" Oak asked, puzzled.

Ash didn't have any Pokémon suitable for using a Metal Coat.

Was he planning to give it as a gift to his girlfriend?

Or maybe he wanted to help Brock's Onix evolve?

"I don't have a Metal Coat here," Oak said.

Ash glanced around the lab.

It was spacious, sure—but still far too small to release the giant Onix indoors.

If he did that, Oak might ban him from the laboratory forever.

"Come outside and you'll understand," Ash said, heading toward the backyard.

Oak followed, confused.

"What are you—"

"Take a look."

Ash released Onix.

Professor Oak's gaze moved back and forth between Ash and the giant Onix.

His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out.

After several seconds, he finally shouted:

"Ash!"

"Did you capture that giant Onix?!"

His voice was full of shock and disbelief.

Ash casually tossed the Poké Ball in his hand and nodded.

…Incredible.

Professor Oak was speechless.

He stared intently at the enormous Pokémon.

That length… at least twenty meters…

Looking up at the fierce Onix with its scarred face, Oak couldn't help thinking:

Is Ash some kind of chosen child of fate?

Capturing a Pokémon like this was unbelievable.

It had the largest body ever recorded among its species, terrifying eyes, and battle scars that told countless stories.

For a moment, Professor Oak even felt a slight sense of intimidation.

"Professor Oak, now that you've seen it… do you have a Metal Coat?" Ash asked.

Oak was still staring intensely at Onix.

"Ah—right! Yes… yes! I'll call someone to deliver one immediately!"

He snapped back to reality.

If Ash had an Onix like this, Oak absolutely wanted to research Steelix as well.

"Make it two Metal Coats," Ash added.

"I'll leave the giant Onix here with you."

He figured he might as well get one extra for Brock's Onix to evolve.

After all, he couldn't just take Brock's training manual without giving something in return.

"Sure, sure," Oak replied absentmindedly.

Right now, he barely heard what Ash was saying. His attention was entirely fixed on the giant Onix.

Ash also told Oak about Bruno stepping aside and letting him capture the Onix.

Oak said he would personally call Bruno later to thank him.

He also mentioned something else.

In a few days, an archaeological team would be arriving at Mt. Miyacha.

Since Ash was now familiar with the area, Oak asked him to help guide them.

Ash agreed.

After returning home, Delia heard that Ash would be helping the archaeologists in a few days.

So she took out some vacation tickets.

"Why don't you two relax by the seaside for a few days first?"

Brock declined the invitation.

He wanted to stay behind and learn more from Professor Oak about Pokémon research.

So the trip would just be Ash and Misty.

They could also bring their Pokémon to train and gain experience.

Meanwhile, Delia planned to run the family shop together with Mr. Mime.

As for Misty…

The idea of traveling alone with Ash filled her with mixed emotions.

She was happy to spend time with him.

But she was also a little nervous.

Ash wasn't nearly as well-behaved as he used to be.

Thinking about their time alone together…

Misty's cheeks gradually turned bright red.
