[POV: Alex]
As the Lamborghini Veneno roared out of the Metropolitan Museum's plaza, the silence in the cockpit was heavy, broken only by the continuous, maddening buzz of my phone.
[Current Balance: $100,500,000,000.00] [System Level 4 Activated! Extraction Rate: $3 Billion / Second.]
One hundred billion. The number was so absurd it had no meaning. A trillion was just a few hours away. But as I flooring the accelerator, drifting through the wet streets of Manhattan, the adrenaline of outbidding the Blackwoods was replaced by a cold, sharp chill.
Money could buy buildings, companies, and historical spears. But tonight, it almost couldn't buy protection. If that Blackwood 'Cleaner' in the penthouse had been one second faster, or if Arthur Blackwood had a weapon under the table at the Gala...
Lily, sitting beside me, was looking at the $20 million diamond necklace she was wearing. But she wasn't admiring it. She was looking at the reflections of the cars behind us.
"Alex," she said, her voice like ice. "We're being followed. Three SUVs. Blackwood decals are off, but the armored plating is too heavy for civilians."
I checked the rearview. She was right. The Great Families didn't just accept a hostile bidding war. They declared war.
"Lily, check the Global Security Index," I commanded, my grip tightening on the steering wheel. "I need more than just building security. I need an army. I need mercenaries who answer only to me. Who is the best?"
Lily's fingers flew across her tablet. [Ding! Sovereign Domain Data-Feed Sync Activated.] My system provided real-time corporate data directly to her device.
"The best... used to be Aegis Global," Lily said, her SSS-Rank financial mind already dissecting the data. "They have S-Rank Special Forces veterans, satellite surveillance, and heavy hardware. But they're in trouble. The CEO, Sergei Volkov, a former Spetsnaz commander, refused a contract from the CIA, and now they're being sanctioned. They are five minutes away from filing for bankruptcy."
"Sanctions? Bankruptcy?" I smiled, a predator's grin. "Those are just words that mean 'Aegis Global is on sale'."
I took a sharp turn, tires screeching, and aimed the Lamborghini toward the West Side Highway, heading for a derelict pier. Sergei Volkov didn't have an office on Wall Street; he operated out of a reinforced, unmarked warehouse near the docks.
When we arrived, the warehouse looked abandoned. But my Sovereign Domain perk showed me otherwise: hidden automated turrets, motion sensors, and five armed guards in passive-camouflage gear.
I cut the engine. "Stay here, Lily."
"Not a chance," she replied, unbuckling her seatbelt. "I'm your CFO. If you're buying a paramilitary company, I need to audit their asset sheet."
I chuckled. "Very well. But stay close."
We walked toward the heavy steel door. Before I could even knock, it swung open.
Standing there was Sergei Volkov. He was seven feet tall, built like a brick wall, covered in scars, and holding a customized AK-47 pointed directly at my chest. Above his head, the Eye of Discernment shimmered: [Target: Sergei Volkov] [Specialty: Strategic Warfare / Tactical Security. Level: SSS-Rank.] [Loyalty Potential: 99% (Once his pride is satisfied).] [Condition: Desperate. Aegis Global debt: $1.2 Billion.]
"You have five seconds to explain why I shouldn't turn you both into Swiss cheese," Sergei growled, his voice a gravel truck. "We are closed. For good."
"I'm here to pay off your $1.2 billion debt," I said, not even blinking. "And I'm here to offer you a new contract."
Sergei paused, the weapon dipping slightly. He looked at my vicuña suit, my watch, and the goddess-like Lily standing beside me. "A contract? The Blackwoods already sent their envoys. They offered to absorb Aegis and put me on a leash. I told them to burn."
"I'm not the Blackwoods, Sergei. I'm Alex. The man who just bought The Zenith and outbid Arthur Blackwood by $18 billion for a toy spear." I smiled. "I don't need a leash. I need an Apex Predator to hunt the other predators."
"Alex..." Sergei muttered, the name triggering a recognition. His tablet, lying on a stack of ammunition crates, was blinking with corporate news. "You... you're the Mystery Billionaire."
"Guilty." I pulled out my phone and tapped the System interface.
[Action: Aegis Global Debt Clearance.] [Payment: $1,200,000,000.00]
Buzz. [Current Balance: $99,000,000,000.00]
Buzz. (The extraction rate had reset to the $1B level until I confirmed the Level 4 unlock with another large spend).
Sergei's tablet let out a series of frantic pings. He dropped his weapon and ran to the crates, grabbing the device.
"My bank... the debt... it's gone!" Sergei looked up, his face pale with a mix of shock and terror. "In one second? How?"
"That was just to say hello," I said, walking past him into the warehouse. It was filled with APCs, high-tech drones, and enough weaponry to take over a small country. "Now, for the contract. Aegis Global is mine. You work for me, directly. Your team's base salary will be 100 times their current rate."
Sergei followed me, his SSS-Rank tactical mind struggling to adapt to this new reality. "That... that is an astronomical number, sir. What is the catch?"
"The catch is, you and your best team are my primary shadow-security unit. You protect me. You protect Lily. And you ensure that whenever I spend a dollar, the world knows that making an enemy of Alex is a death sentence."
Lily stepped forward, her calculator already running. "Sergei, your operations will need a permanent, off-the-books base. New York is too open."
"I have an idea," I said. I pulled out my phone and accessed the global real-time property market. I wanted a base. Something the System could upgrade. I needed a sovereign territory.
[Action: Private Property Acquisition.] [Target: 'Cipher Island' (South Pacific).] [Description: 50,000 acres, deep-water port, built-in underground military bunker (cold war era), complete satellite dead-zone.] [Asking Price: $8 Billion.]
"I'm buying 'Cipher Island'," I announced, my voice echoing in the warehouse. I tapped the screen once.
[Payment Authorized: $8,000,000,000.00] [Transaction Complete. Cipher Island deed transfer initiated.]
The mechanical voice chimed in my skull: [Ding! $10 Billion Milestone Reached! Level 4 extraction rate of $3 Billion / Second is now permanently active.]
Sergei stared at me as my phone continued to vibrate violently. [Current Balance: $91,000,000,000.00... $94,000,000,000.00...]
He dropped to one knee, a Russian tradition of absolute submission. "Commander. My life is yours. Aegis Global answers only to you. We are your spear and your shield."
I looked at Lily, who was smiling, her 'Eye of Discernment' glowing with 98% loyalty potential.
The three Blackwood SUVs that had been following us were now parked outside the warehouse. The warehouse's exterior cameras showed them waiting. They didn't know that the situation had changed. They were still following a rich student.
They didn't know they were standing outside the headquarters of the world's most advanced private army, which was now owned by a man with an infinite bank account.
I looked at Sergei. "Sergei, there are three Blackwood units outside. Do you remember what I said about making enemies?"
Sergei's smile was the most terrifying thing I had ever seen. "I remember, Commander. Let's show them what New York's new apex predator looks like."
"I'll handle the financials," Lily said, her fingers already organizing Cipher Island's operational logistics. "We need to set up a holding company. 'Icarus Group'."
"Excellent name," I said. "Because the Great Families are about to realize they just flew too close to the sun."
I walked back to the Lamborghini Veneno, ready to begin my reign. The Blackwoods thought they were fighting for money. But they were fighting for a world I was already in the process of deleting.
