A few minutes later, Bubbles reappeared inside Vault Zero with a triumphant little skip in her step. She held out a McDonald's bag toward Raven like it was a prized relic. Raven took the bag without a word, opened it, and immediately began eating her cheeseburger. She bit into it with satisfaction, munching on her fries like it was the first real food she had in days.
Miranda strolled up beside her with a slow, deliberate pout. "Can I have some fries?"
"No. They're mine," Raven said flatly without looking up.
"Aww…" Miranda's shoulders drooped as she crouched beside Raven and began dragging her finger across the stone floor, forming little circular patterns. As she traced the lines, the circles vanished behind her like the floor was healing itself.
Bubbles wandered over and looked at Raven hopefully. "Can I have a fry?"
Raven looked at her, then handed one over. "Only because you're cute."
Bubbles giggled. "Thank you, Raven."
"Anytime, dear."
Miranda looked up, her mouth twisted in protest. "Aww, that's not fair."
Raven arched an eyebrow and gave her a tired look. "You're sulking, aren't you Miranda?"
Miranda's lips twitched. "Maybe a little bit."
Raven sighed. "Fine, here. You can finish my frys off."
In an instant, Miranda leapt forward and began scarfing down the fries. As she ate, small red stone hearts floated upwards from her head, drifted behind her, then shattered and were reabsorbed into the floor.
"You literally love fries so much that you're shedding hearts," Raven said shocked.
Miranda didn't even pause her chewing. "It's like you kids say today. I heart emoji."
Raven visibly trembled. "That's so cringe."
She turned to Bubbles. "I'll be going to Azkaban in a couple of days to deal with that Dementor issue Miranda mentioned. You can accompany me. I need a guide to find that place anyway. I haven't exactly explored Greater London yet."
Bubbles nodded eagerly. "You got it. Just go ahead and give me a call. You can just call out Bubbles, and I'll appear in front of you. Don't worry—normal humans can't usually see me."
Raven gave a short nod. "Just be careful around Harry Potter. He's not exactly normal, and I don't need him knowing that there's anything up with me yet. It will take a while until he gets his acceptance letter to Hogwarts. I'll probably be on their list too now."
Miranda licked the salt off her fingers and looked over. "Don't worry about the Book of Names in Hogwarts. We have an inn with the four original founders. Any member of the Cross lineage that shows up will have their first and last name recorded like everybody else. Nobody will be suspicious of your last name. It's not like they've ever heard of it."
She paused, then added, "You'll be treated with the same privileges as a pure blood in Hogwarts. You won't be treated as a Muggle."
Miranda continued casually, "Currently, there are twenty-eight great houses in England. Those make up the twenty-eight noble families, or 'pure bloods,' as they like to call themselves. But now there's going to be twenty-nine. It's always been twenty-nine, with the Cross lineage as the number one family. It's just that nobody's been active enough to activate the twenty-ninth lineage in the Sacred Twenty-Eight in centuries
Raven stared at her dryly. "Great. I'm a noble now."
Miranda shook her head. "No, no, my dear. You're a noble among nobles. When we talk about the Cross lineage, it's a cut above the rest."
Bubbles nodded. "She's right, Raven. You need to act like a member of the Cross lineage."
Raven tilted her head, thoughtf6ul. "That means being arrogant, condescending, and looking down on people."
"Exactly," Miranda confirmed.
A faint smile tugged at Raven's lips. "I think I can manage that well."
Bubbles looked at her curiously. "I don't know. You seem awfully nice to me, and I'm just a servant."
Raven gave her a tired look. "You look like a cute six-year-old girl. What am I supposed to do—be mean to you?"
Bubbles blinked, then nodded. "Actually… touché. That's a good response. I think anyone who would treat me badly must have something wrong with their head."
"Obviously," Raven said.
She stood, brushing off her clothes. "Alright. I'm heading back. I've got to get back to the orphanage. I have to see Claire and Harry. They will be waking up soon, and I need to get some sleep."
Without another word, she phased upwards and vanished through the ceiling of Vault Zero.
Miranda watched her leave, then turned to Bubbles. "You know, you could've just teleported her back there, right?"
Bubbles scratched the back of her head. "I forgot to tell her that."
Miranda sighed. "Just tell her next time. You're very convenient for travel."
"Well, I've got to be useful and earn my pay somehow," Bubbles said.
Miranda froze mid-step. "Since when are you getting paid?"
"Actually, I need to talk to you about my wage increase," Bubbles said casually. "Now that I'm active duty again, you are paying me active duty rates, right?"
Miranda slowly tossed the empty fry carton into the corner. "I don't know what you're talking about."
She cracked her knuckles. Bubbles mirrored the motion, her face serious.
"I think you know exactly what I'm talking about," Bubbles said, calm but firm. "Or you might find yourself disappearing in a bubble."
Sweat formed on Miranda's brow. "Alright. Alright. Alright. You get active duty wages."
Bubbles smiled. "That's better."
Raven arrived back at the Applewood Home for Wayward Children and slipped into bed. Falling asleep instantly. Morning came far too fast.
Claire's voice called up the stairs. "Raven? Raven? Are you feeling okay? I haven't heard from you all night."
Raven groaned and called back, "I'm fine, Claire! I was just sleeping really deeply!"
Claire opened the door, peeking in to find Raven still in her pajamas. "Alright. Get dressed. Come down after you've showered and brushed your teeth. Breakfast is being prepared. I'll go wake up Harry now."
"Okay," Raven mumbled as she rubbed her face.
