Part 2: Rumors and Jealousy
The next morning, Annabel woke up feeling something she hadn't felt in a long time.
Nervous excitement.
She sat at the edge of her bed, staring at her reflection in the mirror. Her long brown hair fell over her shoulders, and her soft gray eyes looked uncertain.
"Don't be stupid," she whispered to herself.
Yesterday had meant nothing.
Nathan Cole was kind to everyone.
Maybe he had simply been polite.
Maybe he had just needed somewhere quiet to sit.
It definitely didn't mean he actually wanted to be her friend.
Still… the memory of his smile warmed her chest.
Annabel shook her head and grabbed her bag.
It was just another school day.
Nothing would change.
Or so she thought.
The Hallway Storm;
When Annabel walked into East High that morning, something immediately felt different.
People were staring.
Whispers followed her as she passed through the hallway.
Annabel's stomach tightened.
Had she done something wrong?
Then she heard someone say it.
"That's the girl."
"Yeah, the one Nathan was sitting with."
Annabel froze.
Her heart dropped.
Oh no.
The rumors had started.
Before she could escape to her locker, a familiar voice cut through the hallway.
"Well well… look who's suddenly famous."
Clarke Givenchy stepped in front of her.
Her three friends stood behind her like loyal guards.
Clarke tilted her head, pretending to study Annabel carefully.
"So tell me something," she said sweetly. "What kind of trick did you use to get Nathan to sit with you?"
"I didn't—"
Clarke interrupted her with a laugh.
"Oh please. Girls like you don't get attention from guys like Nathan unless you're doing something sneaky."
The girls behind her giggled.
Annabel felt heat rush to her face.
"I didn't ask him to sit with me," she said quietly.
Clarke's eyes narrowed.
"Then why did he?"
Annabel had no answer.
Because she didn't know either.
Clarke leaned closer.
"Let me give you a piece of advice," she whispered coldly.
"Stay away from him."
The warning hung in the air.
Just then, a voice spoke behind them.
"Stay away from who?"
Everyone turned.
Nathan stood at the end of the hallway.
His green eyes were calm, but there was a sharp edge in them.
Clarke's expression changed instantly.
"Nathan !" she said brightly, flipping her hair. "We were just talking."
Nathan glanced at Annabel.
Her eyes were fixed on the floor.
"What about?" he asked.
Clarke smiled sweetly.
"Oh nothing important."
Nathan didn't look convinced.
But the bell rang before he could ask more.
Students began rushing to class.
Clarke gave Annabel one last cold look before walking away.
Annabel grabbed her books and hurried toward her classroom.
Her heart was still racing.
A Seat That Changed Everything
English class was Annabel's favorite subject.
Books were the only place she felt truly comfortable.
Today, however, she could barely focus.
Her mind kept replaying the hallway confrontation.
And then…
The classroom door opened.
Nathan walked in.
Girls immediately straightened in their seats.
He scanned the room.
And then he did something no one expected.
He walked past all the empty seats…
…and sat beside Annabel.
The entire class went silent.
Annabel's eyes widened.
"You don't have to do that," she whispered quickly.
"Do what?" Nathan asked.
"Sit here."
He leaned back in his chair.
"Why not?"
"Because people will talk."
"They already are."
Annabel didn't know what to say to that.
The teacher walked in and started the lesson.
But half the class was still staring.
And Annabel could practically feel Clarke's glare from the back row.
Nathan leaned slightly closer and whispered,
"You look like you're about to faint."
"I might."
He chuckled softly.
That sound alone made Annabel's heart skip.
Unexpected Friendship;
Over the next few days, something strange began happening.
Nathan kept sitting with her.
Not just in English class.
At lunch.
In the library.
Sometimes he even drives her home after school.
At first, Annabel thought it was temporary.
But it didn't stop.
And people definitely noticed.
Some students were curious.
Some were amused.
But Clarke Givenchy was furious.
The Cafeteria Incident;
The cafeteria buzzed with noise during lunch.
Annabel sat across from Nathan , nervously stirring her drink.
"You're staring at your food like it offended you," Nathan said.
"I'm thinking."
"That's dangerous."
She almost smiled again.
Almost.
"Why are you doing this?" she finally asked.
"Doing what?"
"Being nice to me."
Nathan looked surprised.
"Shouldn't I be?"
Annabel hesitated.
"You're popular," she said quietly. "People like you don't hang out with people like me."
Nathan leaned forward.
"And what kind of person are you?"
She looked down.
"The invisible kind."
Something in Nathan's chest tightened.
"You're not invisible to me," he said softly.
Before Annabel could respond—
A tray slammed onto the table.
Milk spilled across Annabel's notebook.
"Oh my gosh," Clarke said dramatically. "I'm so clumsy."
Her eyes, however, were anything but sorry.
Annabel's face turned pale.
Her notebook—filled with her private writing—was soaked.
Clarke smirked.
"Oops."
Nathan stood up slowly.
The cafeteria grew quiet.
"You did that on purpose," he said calmly.
Clarke raised an eyebrow.
"Are you accusing me of something?"
"Yes."
For a moment, no one moved.
Then Nathan grabbed some napkins and handed them to Annabel.
"Don't worry," he said gently. "We'll fix it."
Clarke stared at them.
Her jealousy burned like fire.
And in that moment she made a decision.
If Annabel Walker thought she could steal Nathan's attention…
…she was about to learn how cruel high school could really be.
The Secret No One Knew;
The night, Annabel sat at her desk staring at her ruined notebook.
It contained something very important.
Her stories.
Writing was her escape.
Her dream.
Every page was filled with characters, emotions, and worlds she created to survive reality.
Now half of it was ruined.
Tears blurred her vision.
Suddenly her phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
She hesitated before opening it.
Nathan :
"Did you save any of your writing?"
Her heart skipped.
Annabel:
"Some of it."
A moment passed.
Then another message appeared.
Nathan:
"Good. Because I think you're going to be a writer someday."
Annabel stared at the screen.
No one had ever said that to her before.
She typed slowly.
Annabel:
"How do you know?"
The reply came instantly.
Nathan:
"Because when you talk about books, your eyes light up."
For the first time that night…
Annabel smiled.
