Chapter 1 - ch 1

**All characters are 18+ - Final year seniors at Beacon Hills High**

### THE THEATER - AFTER

The theater has no walls.

It has rows that go back too far to count, and seats that remember the shape of everyone who ever sat in them. The air smells like old books and New Orleans rain and the Salvatore Boarding House kitchen at 2 a.m.

They are all there. Old. Not dead, just *after*. The kind of old that comes after you've survived everything that was supposed to kill you.

Klaus Mikaelson sits with Hayley curled into his side, her head on his shoulder, his hand over hers like if he lets go she'll vanish. His eyes haven't left the screen since it lit up. Rebekah is between Elijah and Kol, mascara ruined, clutching Elijah's sleeve. Freya has Keelin's hand and Vincent's. Marcel, Cami — Cami, breathing, here — Alaric with silver at his temples, Caroline holding both his hands. Damon with Elena asleep against him, Stefan with a softness around his eyes he only got in the last twenty years of his second life. Bonnie. Matt Donovan, Sheriff now, old Sheriff. Josie and Lizzie Saltzman grown women, holding each other. Landon, Rafael, MG, Kaleb, Jed. The whole stitched-together, bickering, impossible family.

At the front, the Author. Not a person. A shape made of turning pages.

"You kept asking," the Author says, and its voice is paper and ash and love. "Even at the end, you kept asking where she went. When the pit took her and didn't give her back."

The screen shivers. Black pit. Mud. Light.

"Her name is Hope Mikaelson," the Author says. "This is where Malivore put her."

And the theater goes dark, and Beacon Hills opens its mouth.

### EPISODE 1: WOLF MOON

#### BEACON HILLS PRESERVE - NIGHT

The girl running through the woods tonight is not Hope.

She is Laura Hale. Twenty-four. Strong. A werewolf who thought she was coming home. She runs and she doesn't make a sound because she was taught not to. Her breath comes in sharp, white puffs. Her ankle turns. She falls.

Something stands over her that used to be family. Red eyes. Claws. She doesn't get to scream.

Twenty-three minutes later, the woods are full of blue and red.

Sheriff Noah Stilinski kneels in leaf-rot and mud that soaks through the knees of his uniform. He's been Sheriff for fifteen years. He's found hikers, drunks, kids who thought the Preserve was a shortcut. He has never found half a girl.

"Jesus Christ," his deputy whispers behind him. "Where's the rest of her?"

Noah doesn't answer. He looks at the pale legs, the sneakers still tied, and thinks of Stiles. Thinks of Stiles at eight years old, feverish, asking if monsters were real. He pulls the sheet over.

Half a mile deeper, the forest tears.

It is not a sound. It is a pressure, like the world gagging on something it cannot swallow. The air peels open, black and viscous, and it *spits*.

Hope hits the ground from ten feet up.

She lands on her hands and knees and the impact cracks through her wrists, her teeth. Black sludge pours out of her mouth, her nose. Malivore. Months of being digested. She heaves until there is nothing left, until her tribrid blood finally, finally catches and burns the rest out of her.

She is in mud up to her elbows. She is wearing the same clothes she wore the day she walked into the pit — torn sweater, jeans. Her hair is matted to her face. Her hands won't stop shaking.

She pushes up. "No—" Her voice is shredded glass. "No, no, no—"

The pit is gone. The school is gone. The sky above is not Virginia. It smells like pine sap and wet earth and old blood. Beacon Hills. She doesn't know the name yet, but her wolf does. Her wolf lifts its head inside her chest and listens.

Sirens. Distant. Through the trees.

Hope starts walking toward them because a siren means people, and people mean she isn't in nothing anymore.

#### SCOTT MCCALL'S BEDROOM - 12:07 AM

Scott McCall wakes up to tapping on glass.

He's eighteen, all elbows and heart, asthma inhaler on his nightstand next to a half-finished essay. His mom works nights. His dad doesn't live here anymore. His best friend lives in his window.

"Scott! SCOTT! Open the window, you useless asthmatic!"

Stiles Stilinski is hanging out of his beat-to-death blue Jeep, one leg out, phone flashlight in Scott's face. He's eighteen too, lanky and frantic, hair that has never been combed successfully in his life, eyes too bright. Sheriff's kid. Since they were six.

Scott shoves the window up. Cold air hits him. "Are you trying to get shot by my mom?"

"My dad found a body!" Stiles says, and he's grinning, which is his fear face. "Like, half a body! In the Preserve! Laura Hale — well, they don't know it's her yet but it's her — anyway, other half is still out there! If we find it before the cops, Coach has to put us on first line. It's science!"

"It's trespassing on a crime scene," Scott says, but he's already pulling on his hoodie and his shoes, because Stiles says *we* and Scott has never known how to say no to that word.

The Jeep smells like fries and Axe body spray and anxiety. Stiles drives like he's being chased.

"Okay, so my dad said the body's by the old trailhead, and if we cut through Miller's—"

"Stiles, slow down—"

"I am slow! This is slow for me!"

They don't see the girl stumbling between the trees, barefoot, leaving bloody footprints that heal over as soon as she lifts her foot.

#### THE PRESERVE - 12:31 AM

Fog sits low enough to drown in. Stiles's flashlight beam shakes.

"This is it," he whispers. "This is where—"

Scott's chest seizes. A wheeze. "Stiles— inhaler— I—"

"Okay, okay, breathe—"

Light floods them. Red and blue.

"MIECZYSŁAW STILINSKI!"

Sheriff Stilinski stands there, face thunderous, flashlight like a weapon. He grabs Stiles by the back of his jacket. "You are out of your mind! This is an active homicide scene!"

"Dad—"

"Jeep. Now. Home. You do not move until school tomorrow or I will handcuff you to your bed, I swear to God."

Stiles is dragged away, throwing a desperate look over his shoulder at Scott. "Stay! Stay there! I'll come back!"

And then it's just Scott. Alone. Breathing too loud.

He hears the twig snap behind him.

He turns, and there she is.

Hope stands at the edge of his light, barefoot, covered in mud to her knees, sweater torn at the shoulder. Her eyes catch the light and throw it back amber-blue. She looks like a ghost that got tired of haunting.

"Are you—" Scott's voice cracks. "Are you hurt? There's police, I can—"

"Where am I?" she asks. Her voice is raw, like she's been screaming for months. She sways. "What woods are these?"

"Beacon Hills Preserve. Are you— did someone—"

The growl comes from everywhere.

Scott spins. The beam hits nothing. Then everything.

Red eyes, low, huge, not human.

It hits him like a truck. He doesn't even see it move. One second standing, next second on his back, air punched out, teeth sinking into his side, into the soft flesh just above his hip. White-hot, wet, wrong. He screams — a real, boy scream, shocked more than anything.

Hope doesn't think. She *moves*.

Heat rips up her arms, that old, familiar tribrid fire that Malivore had smothered for months. Weak, sputtering, but hers. "GET OFF HIM!"

She slams her hand toward the shape and a pulse of force — not a spell, just raw power — hits it. The Alpha — Peter Hale, burned, feral, half a man holding onto a monster — snarls and jerks back, eyes fixed on her. He smells her. Vampire. Wolf. Witch. Impossible. He bares his teeth at her, confused, furious.

And then Stiles crashes back through the brush, because of course he did, because he left his dad at the parking lot and ran.

"SCOTT! I told you to—" He stops dead. Sees Scott bleeding. Sees Hope with her hands lit like coals. Sees the thing.

"Oh, shit—"

Peter moves again. No plan. Just rage. He hits Stiles next, claws raking across his shoulder, teeth finding the meat of it, deep enough to scar a human for life.

Stiles screams. Goes down hard next to Scott.

Peter is gone. One blink. Just wind and the smell of blood.

Silence rushes back, broken only by two boys trying to breathe.

Hope drops to her knees between them, hands hovering, shaking. She could heal them. Her blood could. But she knows what her blood does. She knows what a bite does in other mythologies. She hesitates one second too long.

The bite takes.

Scott's wound pulls shut, pink and angry, knitting too fast. His back arches.

Stiles's wound does something else. The blood stops. The skin seals silver. And then his whole body seizes.

"Stiles!" Hope grabs his face. His skin is burning up. "Hey, look at me, look at me—"

His eyes fly open.

And they are red.

Not gold. Not blue. Alpha red. Pure, molten, sunrise-through-blood red, lit from the inside. Light spills out of them. The trees around him shiver.

Hope feels it like a pressure wave. The Preserve itself goes quiet, like something just took the throne.

Stiles gasps, claws — actual claws — punching out of his fingertips, then back in. "What— what—" His voice breaks. "What did it do to me?"

Scott sits up, hand over his side where there is no hole anymore, staring at his best friend's face lit up like a god. "Stiles, your eyes—"

#### BEACON HILLS SHERIFF'S STATION - 1:44 AM

The station smells like burnt coffee and old files.

Hope sits in a shock blanket that doesn't help. Her feet are still bare. Mud dried on her calves. A kind deputy tries to get her name, her parents, an address.

"Hope Mikaelson," she says, flat. "I was in— I was somewhere else. I don't know how I got here."

Sheriff Stilinski watches her from his office doorway. He just put his own kid in his Jeep with a warning that would have made a lesser kid cry. Now this girl — eighteen, maybe, but her eyes are thirty — sits in his station with no ID, no phone, a Virginia emergency contact that comes up disconnected. Alaric Saltzman. Mystic Falls. He knows that town's reputation for weird.

He sighs and calls Melissa McCall.

"Mel, it's Noah. I got a girl here. No placement tonight. Looks like she's been through hell. Can she crash with you and Scott? Just tonight."

Melissa McCall shows up in scrubs, hair up, eyes tired and kind. She takes one look at Hope — the shaking hands, the way she holds herself like she's ready to be hit — and doesn't ask a single question that matters. She just kneels and puts sneakers that are too big on Hope's feet.

"Come on, sweetheart," she whispers. "Let's get you warm."

Hope follows because there is nowhere else.

#### MCCALL HOUSE - 2:13 AM

Scott sits on the cold tile of his bathroom, shirt off, staring at his side. The bite is a raised, pink crescent. Already fading. His inhaler sits untouched on the sink. He can hear everything. The drip in the kitchen. His mom's heartbeat downstairs. The girl in the guest room trying not to cry into a pillow.

Down the hall, Hope stands under water so hot it turns her skin red, watching black and brown swirl down the drain. Malivore. The Preserve. She presses her forehead to the tile and finally lets a sob out that she's been holding since she walked into that pit to save her friends.

"Dad?" she whispers to steam. Nothing. "Mom?"

Only her own pulse answers. Wolf, vampire, witch, all humming low and alive again.

A soft knock. Melissa. "Clothes on the bed, honey. Old shirt of Scott's. You're safe here, okay? No one will hurt you here."

Hope nods, throat closed. Safe is a word she stopped believing when she was fifteen and watched her father die.

#### STILINSKI HOUSE - 2:13 AM

Stiles locks his bathroom door and tears his shirt off.

The bite is gone. A thin silver line, like moonlight caught under skin.

His heart is hammering — but it's not his normal anxious hammer. It's deeper. Slower. Powerful.

He leans over the sink, breathing hard, and looks up.

His eyes flash red.

He slams back into the wall. "No. Nope. No, no, no, no—"

Brown again. His eyes. His normal, stupid brown eyes.

He looks at his hands. He can see the cracks in the grout. He can smell his dad's coffee downstairs and the gun oil in the closet and — Scott. He can smell Scott. Two miles away.

And then he *hears* him. Not out loud. Inside.

*Stiles? Dude, something's wrong with me. I can hear everything.*

Stiles whips around. Empty room. "Scott?"

A second later, fainter: *I think I'm going crazy.*

Stiles sinks to the floor, head in his hands, and starts to laugh, terrified and exhilarated, because whatever happened in those woods, it happened to both of them, and for the first time in his life, Stiles Stilinski is not the one left behind.

#### BEACON HILLS HIGH SCHOOL - 8:02 AM

First day of senior year smells like wax and fear.

Scott walks in late and the world is too loud. The fluorescents buzz like wasps inside his skull. He can hear heartbeats — thirty, forty — overlapping. He can smell deodorant and perfume and old blood under the bleachers. He winces.

Hope walks next to him in Melissa's too-big jeans and Scott's old lacrosse tee that slips off one shoulder. Her hair is still damp. She scans the hallway like a battlefield. Her tribrid senses are waking up slowly, and this town hums. Not like Mystic Falls. Older. Wilder. Like the woods have teeth.

"You okay?" Scott asks her, because he's Scott.

"You were bleeding out last night," she says quietly, not looking at him, eyes flicking to his side. "Now you're not even limping."

"Please don't tell my mom."

"I won't."

The front doors slam open and a Jeep screeches like it's being murdered into a parking spot.

Stiles vaults out, sunglasses on indoors, because his eyes keep flashing when he feels anything too big. He sees Scott. Sees Hope. And his whole face does something soft and wrecked.

"You— you're here," he says to Hope. "You were— in the woods— are you okay? I thought—"

He takes his sunglasses off just for her. Just for a second.

His eyes flash red. Bright, pure Alpha.

Hope's breath catches. She was raised by Mikaelsons. She has seen Klaus take an Alpha's power by ripping his heart out. She has never seen a bite *give* it. True Alphas have to earn it through strength of character. They don't get turned into it.

"Stiles," she says, and his name feels like it fits in her mouth.

"Yeah. That's me. That's— yeah. People call me that. Most people. You can— you can call me whatever you want, actually—"

Scott elbows him. "Dude. Breathe."

Stiles breathes. His eyes flash again and Scott sees it this time.

Scott grabs him. "Bathroom. Now."

Hope follows.

#### BOYS BATHROOM

Empty. Bleach. Stiles locks the door, rips the sunglasses off, and looks at Scott like he's about to jump out of his skin.

"Look," he hisses, and lets go.

Red floods his irises. Claws prick out. His canines sharpen. The air gets hot around him, like standing too close to a furnace.

Scott stumbles back into the sinks. "Oh my god— oh my god, your eyes—"

"Yours do it too! Look!"

Scott looks in the mirror. His eyes flash gold. Bright wolf-gold. He gasps and they fade.

"We're— we're werewolves," Scott whispers.

"Werewolves," Hope says from the door, arms crossed, leaning like she's seen this before. Her voice is steady, but her hands are tight. "Both of you."

"You knew?" Stiles spins, eyes still red, chest heaving. "In the woods, you glowed—"

"I didn't know what bit you," she says. Which is true. "But I know what you are now. And Stiles—" She steps closer. The heat coming off him is ridiculous. She reaches out, fingertips just brushing the silver scar on his shoulder. Her skin tingles where she touches him. Power recognizing power. "Yours is different. Red means Alpha. You shouldn't be an Alpha on day one. Alphas have to— they have to take it, or earn it. You were just... chosen."

Stiles stares down at her hand on him. His ridiculous, anxious, overworked heart thuds so loud she can hear it. "Is that bad?"

"It's rare," she whispers, looking up at him. Her blue eyes are so close he can see gold flecks in them that aren't human. "It means you're strong. It means the wolf looked at who you are and decided you were already a leader."

Something in Stiles's chest, something that has been tight since his mom died, since everyone called him the sidekick, the spaz, the liability — loosens.

The bell rings.

#### CHEMISTRY - MR. HARRIS

Mr. Harris loves suffering.

Scott slides into a seat and his nose is assaulted — sulfur, yes, but underneath, blood. And vanilla and bow wax.

Allison Argent walks in. Eighteen, dark hair in a ponytail, archery calluses on her fingers, new girl, smile that makes Scott's newly rewired brain short-circuit. Daughter of hunters. She doesn't know it yet.

"Is this seat taken?" she asks Scott.

Scott forgets English. "No— no— I'm— Scott—"

Hope, two rows back, watches with one eyebrow up that is pure Rebekah Mikaelson. She likes this girl instantly. She can smell the hunter discipline on her, the good kind.

Stiles, who has maneuvered himself next to Hope like his life depended on it, leans over, breath warm on her ear. "That's Allison. New. Scott's been in love for... four seconds. New record."

Hope snorts before she can stop herself. A real laugh, small and startled out of her. "Four seconds? Slow."

Stiles lights up like she just handed him the moon. "You have a laugh. You should— you should keep that. Do that more."

Harris slams a book down. "Mr. Stilinski. Miss Mikaelson. If you're done flirting, perhaps you can tell me what wolfsbane is?"

Hope goes still. She knows wolfsbane. She knows what it does to wolves, to hybrids, to her father. She says nothing.

Stiles, red eyes hidden by sheer will, says, "Plant that can kill werewolves."

Harris stares. "Correct. Surprising."

Under the table, Hope's hand finds Stiles's. Squeezes once. *You're okay.* His palm is almost too hot to touch. He squeezes back and doesn't let go.

#### LACROSSE FIELD - TRYOUTS

Coach Finstock has a whistle and the voice of a man who has given up. "McCall! Stilinski! Let's see if you can catch without tripping over your own feet!"

Jackson Whittemore is there — perfect, cruel, captain, eighteen and already King of Nothing — and Lydia Martin next to him, strawberry-blonde, brilliant, bored, a banshee who doesn't know she's a banshee yet.

Scott steps onto the field and the world narrows. He can hear the ball before it's thrown. He can see the spin. He moves. He is fast. Too fast. He catches, dodges, scores.

Silence. Then Finstock screams.

Stiles is next. He has been bad at lacrosse for three years. Consistently, impressively bad.

Now the stick feels like part of his arm. He runs and his feet barely kiss grass. He hits Jackson and Jackson — Jackson Whittemore, who has never been hit in his life — goes flying and lands on his perfect ass.

The ball flies. Goal.

Dead silence.

"STILINSKI! WHERE THE HELL HAS THAT BEEN? FIRST LINE! BOTH OF YOU! FIRST LINE!"

Scott and Stiles look at each other, panting, gold and red flickering, and grin like idiots.

On the bleachers, Hope sits with her knees to her chest, Melissa's sneakers dangling, and feels her chest crack open with something she thought Malivore took — pride. For them. She catches Stiles's eye across the field. Sweaty, disheveled, eyes flashing red just for her. She smiles, and he almost drops his stick.

Lydia leans over. "You're the new girl. Hope. You know them?"

"Something like that," Hope says.

"Mm. The jittery one is cute when he's not having an asthma attack that isn't asthma," Lydia says, nodding at Stiles. "You could do worse."

Hope laughs again, louder.

#### PARKING LOT - AFTER SCHOOL

Sun bleeding out. Scott's phone buzzes — Allison.

A black Camaro rolls in slow, predatory. Derek Hale steps out. Eighteen going on forty, leather jacket, five o'clock shadow, eyes that watched his family burn. He looks at Scott. Then at Stiles. And stops breathing.

"You," he says to Scott. "You were bitten last night."

Scott freezes. "What? No—"

Derek grabs his arm, pushes the sleeve up. The bite, almost gone. "Who bit you?"

"I didn't—"

Derek's nose flares. His gaze snaps to Stiles. Alpha. On a kid turned last night. Impossible.

"You too."

Stiles steps in front of Scott without thinking. Shoulders back. Heat rolling off him in waves now. Red eyes bleeding through, furious. "Back off him."

Derek actually takes a step back. Shock breaks his mask. "Red— you're an Alpha? You were just turned. How—"

Hope steps between them. Small, immovable. Derek wrinkles his nose because she smells like death and wolf and vampire and something else he has never smelled and doesn't have a name for.

"He said back off," Hope says quietly, and her own eyes flick gold, wolf-gold that is not like theirs.

Derek looks at the three of them — a beta who shouldn't be this strong, an Alpha who shouldn't exist, and a girl who smells like the end of everything — and laughs, humorless.

"You have no idea what you just walked into."

He peels out.

#### THE PRESERVE - NIGHT - RETURN

The plan is stupid. All Stiles's plans are stupid.

"I left my inhaler," Scott lies.

"You left your brain," Stiles mutters, but his hand finds Hope's in the dark and holds on like an anchor. His palm steams in the cold. "Stay close."

Hope nods, flexing her other hand, feeling magic sputter back, low but there.

Derek finds them. Or they find him.

He drops from the trees, slams Scott into a trunk. "You shouldn't have come back! The Alpha is still here! He will kill you!"

Scott gasps.

Stiles *roars*. Actually roars. Red light spills out of him, canines long, claws out, and he hits Derek like a freight train. Two werewolves collide and the forest shakes. Derek is older, trained, but Stiles is an Alpha. A true Alpha. Born, not made. The force throws Derek ten feet.

Derek lands, staring up, awed and afraid. "You pushed me—"

Stiles stands over Scott, chest heaving, red eyes blazing, looking down at his own claws like they belong to someone else. "What am I?"

Hope kneels next to Scott, then looks up at Stiles, voice soft and steady, the voice Hayley used when Hope had nightmares about the Hollow. "You're you. Just more."

Above them, unseen, Peter Hale watches with bleeding eyes and smiles. Two wolves. One an Alpha on day one. And a girl who smells like apocalypse. Perfect.

A howl carries on the wind. Not theirs.

#### ARGENT HOUSE

Allison comes home to Kate cleaning a rifle at the kitchen table and Chris watching the woods.

"Animal attack in the Preserve," Chris says. "Stay out of the woods."

Allison nods, but she's thinking about a boy with kind eyes who smelled like grass and heartbreak.

#### MCCALL HOUSE - LATE NIGHT

Scott and Stiles and Hope sit on Scott's bedroom floor, backs against the bed, sharing cold pizza like the world didn't just end. Scott's bite is gone. Stiles's scar is silver.

"So," Scott says, small. "We're werewolves."

"You're a werewolf," Stiles says, staring at his hands where claws slide in and out when he thinks too hard. "I'm apparently the boss werewolf. Which is insane. That's insane, right?"

"Alpha," Hope says.

Stiles looks at her, red flickering behind brown, and the fear melts a little because she isn't scared. "Is that why I can hear Scott in my head?"

"Pack," Hope says, and the word feels like home, feels like family, feels like Mikaelson. "Wolves have packs. Alphas have packs."

Scott looks between them. "Are we— are we a pack?"

"Yeah," Stiles says immediately, looking at Hope when he says it. "Yeah, we are."

Hope leans her head against Stiles's shoulder. He is hot, like a living fireplace, smells like woods and boy and power, and for the first time since she walked into black nothing, she doesn't feel alone.

"We need rules," she whispers.

"Rule one," Stiles says, grinning despite everything, because he is Stiles. "Hope Mikaelson doesn't get to die in Beacon Hills. Ever."

She looks up, surprised, and he is so earnest it hurts. She smiles, small and real and a little wet around the edges. "Deal."

Outside, the moon is full and huge and indifferent, and somewhere in the Preserve an Alpha licks his wounds and plans.

Inside, three teenagers — two newly bitten werewolves, one tribrid girl far from home — fall asleep on the floor in a pile, breathing in sync, pack before they know the word for it.

#### THE THEATER

The screen goes dark.

The theater is silent except for Rebekah sobbing openly into Elijah's shoulder. Klaus has his face in his hands, shoulders shaking, because his little girl looked so lost in those woods and so found on that bedroom floor. Hayley is whispering, "That's my baby. That's my baby girl. Look at her laugh. I didn't think I'd ever hear that again."

Elena is crying into Damon's shirt. "She found them. She found her people again."

"An Alpha on day one," Elijah murmurs, voice thick, awed. "Mieczyslaw Stilinski. Of course. Character is destiny. Of course the wolf would choose him."

"He's got red eyes," Kol says, grinning through tears. "Our Hope likes the dangerous ones. Like mother like daughter."

"Shut up, Kol," Rebekah sobs, hitting him.

Alaric wipes his eyes behind his glasses. "Is she going to be okay?"

The Author's pages turn, soft.

"That was the night she arrived," the Author says. "The night the bite chose two boys instead of one. The night an Alpha was born without having to kill. The night Hope Mikaelson stopped running."

"The night she started," Hayley whispers.

"Watch," the Author says. "Episode Two is coming."

Marcel, Cami — Cami, breathing, here — Alaric with silver at his temples, Caroline holding both his hands.
