Ashes of the Silent War
Chapter 4 – The War Ignites
Gravehold was no longer a city.
It was a battlefield.
Explosions shook the underground tunnels as missiles from the Crimson Legion slammed into Iron Dominion checkpoints. Heavy machine guns thundered through the streets while mercenary factions chose sides in seconds.
Some fought for money.
Some fought for survival.
And some simply fought because war was the only life they knew.
Above the chaos, burning debris rained from shattered buildings as the Dominion dropship carrying General Elias Rourke vanished into the dark sky.
Kael Varden watched it disappear.
His jaw tightened.
"Running already?" he muttered.
Lyra Kane reloaded her pistols beside him.
"He's not running," she said. "He got what he wanted."
Kael turned toward her.
"And what's that?"
Before she could answer—
Steel flashed in the alley.
The Obsidian Veil assassins had returned.
Three of them now stood between Kael and the street.
Silent.
Unmoving.
Deadly.
The other two had vanished into the chaos of the battlefield.
One assassin tilted his white mask slightly.
"Target confirmed."
Kael lifted his rifle.
"Come try."
They moved at the same time.
Faster than any soldier Kael had ever faced.
One assassin leapt from the wall above him while another rushed from the front.
The third vanished into the shadows.
Kael fired twice.
One assassin twisted midair, dodging the bullet with impossible speed.
The second closed the distance instantly.
A blade slashed toward Kael's throat.
Kael blocked with his knife and slammed his shoulder forward, knocking the assassin back.
But the third one appeared behind him.
Too fast.
Too silent.
Kael barely turned in time as a dagger sliced across his arm.
Blood spilled instantly.
Lyra fired both pistols.
The assassins scattered like ghosts, avoiding every shot.
"These aren't normal killers," she said.
Kael wiped the blood from his arm.
"No."
He stepped forward slowly.
"They're trained."
One assassin spoke calmly.
"You were trained too."
"Battalion 13."
Kael froze.
The assassin tilted his head.
"You were the finest soldiers of the old world."
"But even the finest soldiers…"
"…can be replaced."
Kael's eyes darkened.
"Try replacing me."
The assassins attacked again.
This time Kael moved first.
He threw a flash grenade directly at the ground.
White light exploded through the alley.
For a split second, the assassins lost vision.
That moment was enough.
Kael fired.
Two bullets.
Two masks shattered.
Two assassins collapsed.
The third stepped back cautiously.
Kael walked forward, rifle aimed at his chest.
"Your turn."
The assassin remained calm.
"You still don't understand."
Kael frowned.
"Understand what?"
The assassin pointed toward Lyra.
"Ask her about Battalion 13."
Kael slowly turned toward her.
Lyra's expression had changed.
For the first time since they met…
She looked uneasy.
"What does he mean?" Kael asked quietly.
The assassin spoke again.
"You think Rourke betrayed your unit."
"But the truth…"
"…is worse."
Kael grabbed the assassin by the collar.
"Talk."
The assassin smiled beneath the mask.
"Battalion 13 wasn't betrayed."
"It was sacrificed."
Kael's grip tightened.
"What?"
"Rourke didn't destroy your unit to eliminate enemies."
The assassin's voice remained calm.
"He did it to test something."
Kael felt something cold move through his chest.
"Test what?"
The assassin looked directly into his eyes.
"A weapon."
Kael slowly released him.
"What weapon?"
Lyra finally spoke.
"Project Leviathan."
Kael turned toward her.
"You knew about this."
"Yes."
"Then explain."
Outside the alley, the war grew louder as Crimson Legion tanks smashed through Iron Dominion barricades.
Missiles streaked across the sky.
Gravehold was collapsing into total war.
But Kael only cared about one thing.
Lyra sighed.
"Five years ago… before the world collapsed… governments were secretly developing a new kind of weapon."
"Not nuclear."
"Not biological."
She looked directly at Kael.
"Something far worse."
Kael's voice became cold.
"Finish the story."
Lyra hesitated for a moment.
Then she said the truth.
"Project Leviathan was designed to create super soldiers."
Kael didn't react.
But the air around him felt heavier.
"They used elite military units as test subjects," Lyra continued.
"Battalion 13 was one of them."
Kael shook his head.
"No."
"Yes."
"Rourke didn't betray you."
"He activated the experiment."
Kael's mind raced.
Memories of that night returned.
The strange gas.
The collapsing building.
The soldiers screaming as their bodies failed.
Lyra spoke quietly.
"The experiment was supposed to enhance human strength, speed, and combat awareness."
"But something went wrong."
"Most of the soldiers died."
Kael whispered slowly.
"And the survivors?"
Lyra looked at him.
"You're looking at one."
Silence filled the alley.
Even the assassin didn't move.
Kael stared at his own hands.
The speed.
The strength.
The instincts that saved his life countless times.
All of it suddenly made sense.
"I'm not human anymore," he said quietly.
Lyra shook her head.
"You are."
"Just… upgraded."
Kael laughed bitterly.
"Great."
Then his expression hardened.
"And Leviathan?"
Lyra looked toward the burning skyline of Gravehold.
"Rourke continued the project."
"He's been building an entire army."
Kael felt the anger return.
"How many?"
Lyra answered slowly.
"Thousands."
The assassin suddenly laughed softly.
"You finally see the truth."
Kael lifted his rifle.
"Yes."
The assassin tilted his head.
"And?"
Kael pulled the trigger.
The final Obsidian Veil assassin dropped instantly.
Kael turned toward the battlefield.
Crimson Legion tanks rolled through the city.
Iron Dominion gunships roared overhead.
The war had already spread beyond Gravehold.
Across the wasteland, cities were beginning to burn.
Lyra stepped beside him.
"This is only the first battle."
Kael checked his rifle magazine.
"Then we'd better start winning."
Lyra looked at him carefully.
"You're not afraid?"
Kael stared toward the horizon where distant explosions lit the night sky.
"No."
His voice was calm.
Because if Rourke really created an army of monsters…
Then the world was about to learn something terrifying.
The first monster…
…was still alive.
And he was coming for the rest of them.
