Chapter 34 - The Whispering Halls

Monday morning arrived with the usual chaos of students rushing through the hallways.

Chelsea adjusted her bag as she walked toward her first class, trying to ignore the whispers that seemed to follow her wherever she went.

"Did you see her at the party?"

"Vanessa looks furious."

"Adrian was right there the whole time…"

Chelsea gritted her teeth.

Ugh, high school never changes.

She spotted Mia waiting near the lockers.

"You survived the weekend?" Mia asked with a grin.

Chelsea sighed.

"Barely. Vanessa hasn't let it go."

Mia's eyes twinkled.

"Perfect. The Queen is upset, which means you did something right."

Chelsea rolled her eyes.

"Or she's just plotting something worse."

As they walked down the hallway, Chelsea noticed Vanessa approaching with her entourage. The popular girl's smile was cold, calculated. Her gang of friends flanked her like soldiers ready for battle.

Vanessa's gaze landed on Chelsea immediately.

"Good morning," Vanessa said sweetly, but her eyes were dangerous.

Chelsea stopped walking.

"Morning," she replied calmly, forcing herself not to flinch.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You know, most people would have learned by now that it's unwise to cross me."

Chelsea crossed her arms.

"I'm not most people."

Vanessa's smile widened.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

Her friends laughed quietly.

Chelsea knew Vanessa wasn't done, but before she could respond, Adrian appeared from the corner of the hallway.

His calm presence made Vanessa pause.

"You again?" Vanessa said, voice sharp.

Adrian didn't speak. He simply moved slightly in front of Chelsea, as if letting everyone know without saying a word that she was under his protection.

Vanessa's eyes flicked between Adrian and Chelsea.

"Interesting," she murmured, stepping back slightly.

The bell rang, and students rushed to their classrooms.

Chelsea tried to focus on her lessons, but the tension never left her mind.

Even in the middle of history class, her thoughts wandered back to Vanessa, to Adrian, to the confrontation at the party.

Why does Adrian act like nothing bothers him?

During lunch, Chelsea chose to sit outside in the courtyard. The air was cooler there, and she needed a moment of peace.

A group of students passed by, whispering.

"Did you see what happened with Vanessa?"

"Chelsea's fearless."

Chelsea rolled her eyes. She didn't like the attention, but she had to admit… it felt a little empowering.

Suddenly, footsteps approached. She looked up and saw Adrian, Marcus, Leo, and Ethan walking toward her.

Leo grinned.

"Hey, nerd girl. Mind if we join?"

Chelsea raised an eyebrow.

"Since when is my table public property?"

Marcus laughed.

"Since today."

Adrian didn't speak. He simply sat down next to Chelsea, his expression calm, almost unreadable.

Chelsea tried not to notice the subtle way he angled his chair slightly toward her.

"You handled Vanessa well yesterday," Ethan said quietly.

Chelsea frowned.

"I didn't do much."

"You did," Ethan insisted.

Leo leaned closer.

"Seriously, you just stood there, and she lost it. That's epic."

Chelsea smirked.

"Glad to entertain you all."

Adrian finally spoke, his voice low and steady.

"You shouldn't let her get to you."

Chelsea raised an eyebrow.

"You make it sound easy."

Adrian looked at her briefly, then turned his gaze away.

"It's not easy," he admitted softly—but quickly, he added, "But it's not worth reacting."

Chelsea studied him. That soft admission was gone in an instant. His expression returned to unreadable calm.

He'll never tell me how he really feels, she thought. Never.

After lunch, Chelsea walked down the hallway toward her next class.

Vanessa appeared from the opposite direction, blocking her path with a smirk.

"Well, well," Vanessa said. "If it isn't the little bookworm again."

Chelsea stopped.

"And if it isn't the Queen of Drama."

Vanessa's smile widened.

"You're brave, I'll give you that."

Chelsea crossed her arms.

"Or stubborn. You decide."

Vanessa stepped closer, her friends flanking her.

"You're really asking for trouble, you know."

Chelsea looked at her calmly.

"I think you're the one inviting it."

Before Vanessa could respond, Adrian appeared from behind Chelsea, moving with his usual quiet authority.

Vanessa froze.

"You're really protective of her, aren't you?" she said, her voice dangerously soft.

Adrian didn't answer. He simply placed himself between Chelsea and Vanessa, his posture calm but unyielding.

Vanessa's gaze flicked to the students around them.

"You think you're untouchable?" she whispered.

Adrian's eyes met hers.

"Try me," he said simply.

The hallway fell into an uneasy silence.

Chelsea felt the weight of the tension, her chest tightening slightly. She had never seen Vanessa so focused, so determined, and yet… Adrian was like a wall she could lean on.

Vanessa's smirk returned, cold and calculated.

"This isn't over," she said quietly, backing away.

Adrian didn't move.

Chelsea exhaled slowly, finally allowing herself to breathe.

"Thanks," she whispered, barely audible.

Adrian looked at her briefly, expression unreadable.

"You don't need to thank me," he said.

Chelsea frowned.

"Then why did you do it?"

Adrian smirked faintly.

"Because it had to be done."

And just like that, he turned and walked away, leaving Chelsea standing in the hallway, frustrated, confused, and strangely drawn to him.
