Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Accidentally in Frame

The promotion happened on a Monday, which was already an improvement over the way Daniel Wright's life had historically treated Mondays.

Mr. Patel delivered it in his customary style — efficiently, without ceremony, as though announcing a minor inventory adjustment.

"You're on the register starting tomorrow," he said, not looking up from his clipboard. "Mira is moving to stockroom full time. Her back." He made a vague gesture that communicated both sympathy for Mira's back and a comprehensive indifference to sentiment in general. "You'll get the extra dollar fifty an hour."

Chloe looked up from the mop she was returning to its corner. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me. Just don't make mistakes on the till." He tapped something on his clipboard. "Mira made mistakes on the till."

"I won't make mistakes on the till."

He looked at her for a moment with the appraising expression he usually reserved for evaluating bulk purchase deals, then nodded once and disappeared into the back office.

Liam, who had witnessed this exchange from behind a display of discounted festive candles he was pretending to organise, turned to her with an expression of theatrical congratulations.

"Register," he said gravely, as though she'd been appointed to public office. "Big time."

"Dollar fifty an hour," she said.

"Life-changing."

"Actually, yes," she said, which made him blink, because she'd said it with complete sincerity and no irony whatsoever, and sometimes Chloe Morales said things like that and Liam Chistwood did not entirely know what to do with them.

Mr. Patel would later describe it, to his wife, as the best business decision he had made in eleven years of operating Lucky Mart, which was saying something because the man prided himself on his business decisions.

The effect was not immediate — it built, the way good things tend to, through accumulation. The first day, a few of the regular customers did a small double-take at the new face behind the register and took an extra moment completing their transactions. The second day, a young man came in for a single bottle of water, spent four minutes selecting it from the refrigerated section despite there being only one option, and then spent another three minutes at the register asking Chloe questions about the store's loyalty programme, which Lucky Mart did not have. On the third day, two of his friends came with him.

By the end of the first week, something had quietly shifted in the foot traffic patterns of that particular strip of the Bronx.

It wasn't that she did anything, exactly. She wasn't flirtatious — she was, in fact, the least flirtatious person Liam had ever observed occupying an attractive human body, which he found both admirable and personally inconvenient. She was simply present in a way that was somehow arresting. She looked at people when they spoke to her with the full, unhurried attention of someone who had decided that whatever you were saying was worth hearing. She answered questions directly. She remembered regulars' names by their third visit and what they usually bought by the fourth. She had a way of handing people their change — setting it in the palm rather than dropping it — that three separate customers had, unprompted, described to Liam as "really nice, actually."

And she was, of course, objectively and increasingly beautiful in a way that a month of regular meals, adequate sleep, and the basic dignity of a warm room had been steadily amplifying. The hollowness had left her cheeks. The chapped rawness had left her lips. Her hair, washed and untangled, had revealed itself to be exactly as thick and dark and wayward as it had promised in those first difficult days, and she wore it in a loose knot at the back of her neck that had caused one elderly regular named Mr. Kowalski to stop dead in the entrance, forget what he'd come in for, and purchase seventeen dollars' worth of items he definitely hadn't intended to buy.

She wore no makeup. This detail seemed to particularly affect people, in a way she found genuinely puzzling — she wasn't wearing makeup because she hadn't gotten around to acquiring any and hadn't especially prioritised it, and the repeated male response to this fact suggested to her that the world's relationship to female appearance was considerably more complicated than her previous thirty-one years as Daniel Wright had prepared her to understand.

Liam's role in the whole operation was somewhat different but complementary. He was warm where she was composed, animated where she was still, and had a smile that operated like a public utility — broadly available, reliably pleasant, serving the community. The female regulars tended to drift toward whichever end of the counter he occupied with the same gentle gravitational pull that the male regulars exhibited toward Chloe.

Mrs. Okafor, who came in every Tuesday and Thursday for the same combination of items and had been a loyal customer since the store opened, began arriving on Wednesdays as well, which she justified to herself as convenience and which had nothing to do with wanting to see how the two young people behind the counter were getting along.

"You should just date already," she told Chloe one Wednesday afternoon, with the directness of a woman in her sixties who had run out of patience for subtext.

Chloe processed this while bagging Mrs. Okafor's purchases. "We work together," she said.

"So?"

"It would complicate things."

Mrs. Okafor looked at her with an expression that suggested she found this answer inadequate. "He's a good boy. I've known him two years." She accepted her bag. "Don't let a good one go to waste."

"I'll keep it in mind," Chloe said pleasantly.

Mrs. Okafor left, pausing to exchange a warm word with Liam at the other end of the counter. He glanced over at Chloe with a questioning look. She gave him a serene, uninformative smile and turned to the next customer.

He sighed audibly. She pretended not to hear it.

The afternoon errand was Mr. Patel's idea.

The supplier two streets over had a delivery held up — some paperwork issue — and Mr. Patel needed someone to walk over, sign for the partial order, and bring back the items that were ready. Mira's back. The usual delivery person was unavailable. Liam was managing a minor crisis involving a collapsed display of decorative storage tins.

"Chloe," Mr. Patel said, producing a list and a small envelope with the relevant documents. "You know where Garza Wholesale is?"

"Three blocks east, then left on the avenue," she said, because she'd learned the geography of this neighbourhood the way she learned everything — methodically and without fuss.

"Good. Twenty minutes." He handed her the envelope. "Don't dawdle."

She put on her coat — a second-hand wool coat she'd found at a thrift store two weeks ago, charcoal grey, too large across the shoulders but good quality and warm — and headed out into the afternoon.

She smelled the production before she saw it.

That particular combination of diesel from the generator trucks, the ozone-and-coffee scent of a working crew, the low-frequency hum of organised activity — it occupied half a block of the side street she needed to cut through, which was cordoned off on one end with orange construction barriers and staffed at the perimeter by a PA who was simultaneously on two phones and eating a granola bar.

Chloe assessed the situation with the practical eye of someone who had learned to navigate obstacles efficiently. The cordoned section was maybe sixty feet of pavement. The alternative route added several minutes. The PA was clearly not paying attention to the barrier end nearest the building line, where there was a gap of perhaps three feet.

She checked her watch. Mr. Patel had said twenty minutes.

She went through the gap.

She was not, she would later reflect, entirely unaware that there were cameras. You would have to be essentially unconscious to miss the full film crew occupying the middle of the street — the camera rigs, the lights on their towering stands, the cluster of monitors and the people gathered around them, the larger-than-usual quality of the general organisational chaos. She was aware of all of this. She simply assumed, with the reasonable logic of a person who had things to do, that she was behind the cameras and therefore irrelevant to them.

She was not behind the cameras.

She was, as she would discover much later, walking directly through the edge of a live take — a street scene, a wide establishing shot that had been set up to capture a broad sweep of the block. She was in frame for perhaps eight seconds. She didn't look at the camera. She wasn't performing anything. She was simply walking — coat collar up against the cold, that dark hair catching the thin afternoon light, the errand envelope tucked under her arm — with the particular quality of focus that she brought to everything, entirely absorbed in whatever calculation was currently running in her head.

Someone said "Cut."

Someone else said something she didn't catch.

She was already past the crew, back on the open pavement, folding her route toward Garza Wholesale, her mind already on the supplier's paperwork.

Behind her, at the bank of monitors, a director leaned forward in his chair with a small frown that was not displeasure.

"Who," he said, to no one in particular, "was that?"

His assistant looked at the monitor. Then looked at the street. Then back at the monitor.

"I... don't know," she said.

The director looked at the footage. Eight seconds. A girl walking through a frame, not performing, not posing, not aware of being watched — and somehow, inexplicably, completely and utterly impossible to look away from.

He watched it again.

"Find out," he said.

Chloe collected the partial delivery, signed the paperwork correctly, and was back at Lucky Mart in eighteen minutes.

"Good," said Mr. Patel, inspecting the items. "No mistakes."

"No mistakes," she confirmed, hung up her coat, and returned to the register.

Outside, three blocks away, a film crew was wrapping for the day. In a canvas chair near the monitor bank, a director was rewinding eight seconds of footage for the fourth time, trying to articulate to his assistant director something he hadn't quite found the words for yet.

It was the quality of her attention, he would eventually say. The way she moved through the world like she was actually thinking about something — not performing thought, actually doing it. The camera had caught it the way cameras occasionally caught things that the human eye missed in real time.

He'd been making films for twenty years.

He'd seen it maybe three times.

He watched the footage a fifth time.

"Find her," he said again, more quietly. "I mean it."
