The hallway slowly returned to its usual noise after the mysterious girl walked away, but the tension she left behind lingered like a storm that hadn't fully broken. Students whispered everywhere. Some stared openly at Adrian. Others looked at Lyra with curiosity. Lyra closed her locker slowly, trying to process what she had just witnessed. Selena had looked uneasy. Adrian had looked tense. And that new girl… she had looked interested in Lyra. None of that felt normal. Lyra turned the corner toward the back staircase, hoping for a moment of quiet away from the gossip. The hallway there was empty. Or at least it was until a familiar voice spoke behind her. "You shouldn't be alone right now." Lyra stopped walking. She didn't turn immediately. "I didn't realize I needed permission." Adrian stepped closer. She could hear his footsteps but they were calm, controlled, like he was always completely aware of everything around him. "That girl who came today," Lyra said finally. "Who is she?" Adrian didn't answer right away. Lyra turned to face him. He was standing closer than she expected. Much closer. His dark eyes were studying her like he was trying to decide something. "You should stay away from her," he said quietly. Lyra sighed. "That seems to be everyone's advice lately." Adrian's expression didn't change. "This isn't a joke." "I know," Lyra replied. "Which is exactly why I want to know what's going on." Adrian stepped even closer. Now they were only inches apart. Lyra could feel the warmth from him and it made her pulse speed up in a way she didn't like admitting. "You're too curious," Adrian murmured. Lyra crossed her arms. "And you're too secretive." Adrian's gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. Lyra noticed. And suddenly the space between them felt much smaller. "Curiosity gets people hurt here," he said. "I can handle myself." Adrian leaned slightly closer. His voice dropped lower. "You think you can." Lyra refused to step back. "I know I can." For a moment neither of them moved. The tension between them was thick now. Not angry. Not exactly. Something else entirely. Adrian lifted his hand suddenly and placed it beside her on the wall, trapping her between his arm and the staircase railing. Lyra's breath caught slightly. "Adrian," she said quietly. "What are you doing?" "Making sure you listen." His face was inches from hers now. Lyra could see every detail in his expression. The sharp line of his jaw. The intensity in his eyes. "Stay away from her," he said again. Lyra swallowed but kept her voice steady. "You're really bad at asking nicely." A faint almost-smile appeared on Adrian's lips. "I wasn't asking." Lyra's heart was beating faster now and she hated that he could probably notice. "You know," she said softly, "people might start thinking you care." Adrian's expression went cold again immediately. He stepped back. The sudden distance felt strange. "Don't mistake warning for concern," he said. "Then what is it?" Lyra asked. Adrian looked at her for a long moment before answering. "Self-preservation." Lyra frowned. "Yours?" Adrian shook his head slightly. "Yours." Before Lyra could respond, footsteps echoed from the hallway nearby. Adrian moved away instantly, the moment gone as quickly as it had appeared. But as he walked past her, he spoke one last time. "The next time she talks to you," he said quietly, "you walk away." Lyra watched him leave, her mind spinning with questions. Because one thing was now painfully clear. Adrian Vale was trying to protect her. And he didn't want her to realize it.
