Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 — Trust

(Hiccup's POV)

Toothless froze.

The low rumble in his chest vibrated through the clearing as his head turned toward the forest edge. His wings lifted slightly, ready to react.

Hiccup followed his gaze.

"…What?" he whispered.

Nothing moved.

The trees stood still in the afternoon light, branches swaying gently in the breeze.

But Toothless didn't relax.

The dragon's ears stayed angled toward the forest, listening.

High above the clearing, hidden in the canopy, the bat-winged dragon slowly shifted her weight along the branch. She had moved without thinking—just a small adjustment of balance.

Apparently that had been enough.

Toothless had heard it.

Her ears tilted forward.

Below, the Night Fury gave a low warning growl toward the trees.

Hiccup stood slowly.

"Is something there?"

Toothless didn't answer, of course.

But he didn't charge either.

Instead he waited.

Listening.

Watching.

After several long seconds the forest remained quiet.

Toothless slowly relaxed.

The rumble faded from his chest.

Hiccup looked back at him.

"False alarm?"

Toothless snorted and lowered himself back onto the grass.

Above them, the bat-winged dragon remained perfectly still again.

No more movement.

No more sound.

For now she stayed hidden.

Below, Hiccup sat down again beside the pond.

"Okay," he said quietly. "Back to the experiment."

He picked up another fish and tossed it toward Toothless.

The dragon caught it.

Hiccup watched carefully.

"Step one," he muttered while opening his notebook, "food equals trust."

He scribbled a note.

Toothless tilted his head curiously.

Hiccup looked up.

"Yeah, I'm writing about you."

Toothless blinked.

Hiccup studied the dragon for a moment.

Then he slowly reached toward the ground between them.

Not toward the dragon.

Just closer.

Toothless watched the movement carefully.

No growling.

Good sign.

Hiccup reached a little farther.

Still nothing.

He leaned forward slightly.

"Okay… here goes."

Slowly, carefully, he extended his hand toward Toothless.

The dragon immediately pulled back.

Hiccup froze.

"Right," he said quietly. "Too fast."

He leaned back again.

Toothless relaxed.

Hiccup thought for a moment.

Then he did something different.

Instead of reaching toward the dragon, he stretched his arm out to the side and placed his hand flat against a nearby rock.

Palm open.

Facing Toothless.

He waited.

Toothless watched him.

The dragon tilted his head slightly.

Curious.

Hiccup stayed perfectly still.

The forest breeze whispered through the trees.

Several seconds passed.

Then Toothless slowly stood and stepped forward.

Hiccup's heart started racing.

The dragon moved cautiously, studying the strange gesture.

One step closer.

Then another.

Toothless lowered his head slightly.

His nose hovered inches from Hiccup's hand.

Hiccup didn't move.

"Come on," he whispered.

High above them, the bat-winged dragon leaned forward slightly on her branch.

Her ears were locked onto the clearing below.

Even she seemed curious about what would happen.

Below, Toothless hesitated.

Then slowly—

He pressed his nose against Hiccup's hand.

The contact was gentle.

Warm.

Hiccup let out a quiet breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

Toothless pulled back slightly.

Hiccup grinned.

"Okay," he said softly. "That was awesome."

Toothless snorted.

Hiccup laughed.

Above them, the bat-winged dragon flicked her tail slowly behind her.

The human had done something remarkable.

He had earned the trust of a Night Fury.

And he had done it without force.

Without dominance.

Just patience.

Below, Hiccup picked up another fish and tossed it toward Toothless.

The dragon caught it easily.

The two sat quietly beside the pond again.

And high in the branches above—

The silent observer continued watching the strange friendship grow.
