He moved deeper into the cavern network, following a narrow passage between crystal formations. The tunnel curved downward again, descending deeper into the underground Rift layer.
The air grew colder.

Kai slowed his steps as he entered another chamber.
This one was smaller than the previous cavern but far more unstable. Cracks ran across the ground where Rift energy leaked upward in faint glowing streams. The atmosphere felt heavier, as if the air itself carried pressure.

Something enormous forced its way upward from the underground tunnel beneath the cavern. The creature's body was long and armored, its thick scales covered with glowing Rift veins. Its head emerged next, revealing rows of jagged teeth and burning yellow eyes.
A Rift Serpent.
Kai's heart rate increased slightly.
Rift serpents were apex predators of underground zones. Their bodies were powerful enough to crush armored vehicles, and their scales could deflect most standard weapons.
The serpent's head rose slowly above the broken ground, its tongue flicking through the air as it tasted the surroundings.
It had sensed Kai.
The creature lunged.
Kai barely jumped aside as the serpent's jaws slammed into the stone floor, crushing rock beneath its teeth.

A violent explosion of purple energy burst upward from the fracture. The shockwave slammed into the serpent's body, knocking the massive creature sideways as Rift energy burned across its scales.
The serpent shrieked violently.
Its armor cracked in several places where the unstable energy struck.
Kai moved instantly.
He ran forward and leaped onto the serpent's neck, driving his knife toward one of the broken scales.
The blade plunged deep.
The serpent roared and twisted violently, throwing Kai across the cavern.
He crashed against the stone wall but rolled to his feet immediately.
The serpent's body thrashed wildly as dark blood poured from the wound.
Kai rushed forward again.
This time he grabbed the broken scale with both hands and used his Titan Strength to tear the wound open further.
The serpent's roar shook the entire cavern.
Then the creature collapsed.
The massive body struck the ground with a thunderous crash.
Silence followed.
Kai stood still, breathing heavily.
The system appeared again.

A single armored soldier.
Unlike the others, his armor was black and far more advanced, covered with glowing genetic circuits. A long energy blade rested calmly in his hand.
The man looked directly at Kai.
His helmet slowly retracted, revealing cold, calm eyes.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"So… you're the one who took the artifact."
Kai's instincts screamed danger.
