"Hey, girl!" Nadia exclaimed, her voice a warm balm to Janine's frazzled nerves.
'"You did so good today, ugh, I hated seeing Henry, that slimy bastard!"
Janine chuckled, feeling a sense of gratitude toward her friend. She could almost picture Nadia's determined expression, her eyes flashing with anger at the mere mention of Henry's name.
"He did look rough, right?" Janine said, recalling her ex-husband's disheveled appearance in court. His stubble and red eyes had made him look like a shadow of the man she'd once loved. As she thought back to their relationship, Janine wondered what had gone wrong. How could their love have turned so sour? She thought of her kids and the horrifying look on their faces when they'd seen her battered face after one of Henry's outbursts. She knew then that she had to leave, and she'd managed to get a message to their neighbors, who'd called the cops.
"I'm so proud of you, Janine. You're doing great…Janine, hello? Janine, you there?"
Nadia's concerned tone pierced through her thoughts.
"Yes, Nadia, sorry. I got distracted. I have a lot of work to do today," Janine replied, trying to focus.
"I called to tell you that a man asked about you today. If I wasn't so into women, I might actually consider having him for myself,"
"What man?" Janine asked, although she already knew the answer.
"His name is uh..Jared…Jared Seplan, and he looked pretty desperate for your contact".
" Did you give it to him?"
"No, I didn't. Although he was quite persuasive, I didn't know if you'd want me to give out your personal information," Nadia replied.
"Thanks for not giving it to him, Nadia,I'll deal with him myself okay?" As she ended the call, Janine couldn't shake off the feeling that her past was slowly catching up with her. She took a deep breath and pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the tasks ahead. For now, she just needed to get through the day. Janine sighed and rested her head on her locker, feeling a mix of emotions. She hadn't told Nadia about her past and the reason she'd left home. That was why she was still attached to her ex-husband Henry in a way – he knew about her past and never judged her.
After a long day at the hospital, Janine rounded up her things and headed home.
Janine knocked on the door of her neighbor's home and Valeria, Mark's wife, welcomed her with a warm hug. "Janine, come on in!" Valeria opened the door wider letting her into the house.
She saw her children, Hannah and Manfred, playing with Alfonso, Mark and Valeria's kid, their faces lighting up with joy.
Janine smiled, She was grateful for this little community, where her children felt safe and loved.
"Hey, sweethearts!" she called out, her children ran to her, hugging her tightly.
"Mommy!" they chimed in unison, their little arms wrapped around her waist.
"How was your day, my loves?" she asked, looking into their bright, smiling faces.
As they chattered excitedly about their day, Janine listened attentively, her heart full of love and appreciation for these precious little lives that had brought so much joy and purpose to her world.
"Mark has a business meeting, but I'd love some company, would you love to stay for dinner?" Valeria asked, her eyes sparkling with warmth.
"We'd love to Val, thank you."
After dinner, they sat on the couch, sipping wine and chatting. Valeria turned to Janine with a curious expression. "Okay, tell me something's up. What's going on?"
Janine's eyes widened in protest. "What? Nothing's up, Val. I just had a rough day, that's all."
Valeria chuckled, her laughter husky and knowing. "No, no, no, honey. Don't lie to me. I can see right through you. You're hiding something, and I want to know what it is."
Janine sighed, feeling the weight of Valeria's perceptive gaze. "Fine…I saw someone today... someone from my past."
Valeria's eyes lit up like fireworks on a summer night. "Ooh, juicy! Is it a man?"
Janine nodded, her heart skipping a beat as she thought about Jared.
Valeria squealed, her voice high-pitched and excited. "What's his name? What's he like?"
Janine smiled wistfully, memories flooding back. "His name is Jared Seplan. We dated throughout high school, and we even got admission to the same college...and then things went south. We broke up, and here we are."
Valeria's eyes softened, her expression understanding. "I'm getting the feeling you don't want to talk about why you broke up, and I won't press it until you're ready, okay, amore?"
Janine nodded gratefully, feeling a sense of relief.
Valeria's grin turned mischievous. "But I have to ask... is he hot?"
Janine laughed, her heart rate accelerating as she thought about Jared's piercing blue eyes and chiseled features. She shook her head, trying to play it cool, but she couldn't deny the spark that had reignited within her. "Let's just say... he's still got it."
As Janine lay in bed that night, her mind wandered back to the events of the day.
She thought about the way their eyes locked, and the spark of recognition that flashed between them. He definitely knew it was her, but what was he playing at?
Why was he in Maryland? She hadn't heard anything about him since she left New York , and the sudden reappearance was both thrilling and unsettling.
Curiosity getting the better of her, Janine got out of bed and went downstairs to her son's room. She sat down at the computer and typed out Jared's name. The search results yielded a treasure trove of information about him. She scrolled through the images, her heart skipping a beat as she saw photos of him. Those piercing blue eyes still had the power to take her breath away.
The search results were like a punch to the gut – Jared Seplan, the CEO of Seplan Pharmaceuticals, was living a life she could hardly recognize.
She scrolled through images of him, her heart racing as she saw photos of him with beautiful women on his arm, laughing and smiling like the king of the world.
The contrast between his life and hers was like night and day – while he was basking in the spotlight, she had lost everything.
Janine slammed the laptop shut and walked back to her bedroom. As she lay in bed, thoughts of her past swirled in her mind, and as she drifted off to sleep, she couldn't shake off the feeling that Jared's return was only the beginning of a storm that would change her life forever.
