Chapter 9 - Chapter 6: The Fifth Bullet

Pranav's body hit the ground with a dull, lifeless thud that echoed across the terrace, the sound carrying far heavier than it should have, as if the world itself acknowledged the finality of it. For a brief moment, everything seemed to stall. The wind slowed, the chaos hesitated, and the violence that had consumed the space felt distant.

Blood began to spread beneath him, dark and steady, slipping into the cracks of the concrete as though it had always belonged there.

Rohan's grip loosened.

"…Pranav…?" he called, his voice breaking under the weight of disbelief.

There was no answer. No movement. No breath.

The silence didn't last.

A tentacle tore through the air with violent speed, snapping the moment apart as it came straight for him.

"MOVE!" Aarav barked.

Rohan reacted on instinct, forcing his damaged body into motion. The broken remains of his shield rose just in time to intercept the strike, metal clashing against something far heavier than it should have been.

The impact drove him backward, his boots scraping harshly against the ground as his arms shook under the force.

"I… can't…" he growled, his voice strained and uneven.

His muscles trembled uncontrollably. Every movement felt sluggish, as though something invisible had wrapped itself around his body and tightened with every breath.

[STATUS: FEAR-STUNNED]

The pressure clung to him, compressing his chest, slowing his reactions, dulling his strength.

Another strike followed almost immediately. This one came faster. Sharper.

The impact hit his shield again, and this time it didn't just resist. It fractured further, cracks spreading across its already damaged surface as small fragments broke away and scattered across the terrace floor.

Rohan staggered, his footing faltering. "…damn it…"

Across the terrace, Aarav stood unmoving.

The gun rested firmly in his hand, but his gaze was not on the monster.

It was on Pranav. On the blood pooling across the concrete. On the stillness that replaced a voice that should have been shouting beside them.

For a fraction of a second, something shifted across his expression. His lips twitched. Not in grief, not in shock, but in something far colder, far more controlled. It wasn't emotion as much as it was a decision.

Then it disappeared.

The creature let out a low, guttural screech, its body shifting as the tentacles rose and writhed with renewed aggression and then it attacked.

Not as a single entity, but as multiple, independent threats.

One tentacle shot forward and coiled tightly around Rohan's arm before he could react.

"AHHHHHH!" Rohan screamed in pain.

The grip tightened instantly, lifting him off the ground as if he weighed nothing. His broken shield slipped from his hand and hit the ground with a hollow clang, now completely useless.

But the other limbs didn't stop. They moved separately, each acting with its own intent, its own timing.

Two lashed toward Aarav at once, slicing through the air with brutal force. Another slammed into the ground nearby, shattering concrete and sending debris flying outward. A fourth curved mid-air, adjusting its trajectory to strike from the side.

"AARAV!" Rohan shouted, struggling as he was dragged higher. "It's not just one!"

Aarav didn't move immediately.

He watched. Not the chaos, not the destruction but the pattern.

The tentacles weren't synchronized. They weren't acting as one. They were independent.

Another strike came.

Aarav shifted slightly, the attack grazing past him as it tore through the air where he had been standing just moments earlier. The force displaced dust and debris, sending it swirling around him.

Still, he didn't panic.

Different limbs… different timing…

His breathing slowed, steadying with deliberate control.

In. Out.

The noise faded. The chaos blurred and the movement began to make sense.

A faint flicker appeared before his eyes.

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

Abnormal Response Detected

Fear Resistance: Initiating…

The fear didn't vanish but it no longer ruled him.

It's not the monster…

His eyes sharpened, focusing deeper.

It's the limbs.

Another wave came. This time, he watched carefully.

One strike hit the ground in front of him, cracking the surface with explosive force. A second swept in from the right, cutting through the air at waist level. A third followed immediately from the left, a piercing thrust aimed to impale.

Then, A pause.

Small.

Almost unnoticeable but real.

Aarav's gaze locked in.

"…three."

Rohan struggled mid-air, his voice strained. "…what…?"

"They attack in threes," Aarav said, his tone calm despite the chaos. "Then they reset."

As if responding to his words, the tentacles halted for a fraction of a second before beginning their next sequence.

Rohan's eyes widened. "…you're seeing that now?!"

"I've been seeing it for a while now," Aarav replied.

Another wave began, faster this time.

One tentacle still held Rohan, tightening further as he choked, his body struggling against the grip. "I… can't breathe…!"

The others attacked relentlessly.

The terrace shook under the force of repeated impacts. Concrete cracked, dust filled the air, and the sound of destruction echoed across the rooftop.

In the center of it all, Aarav stood steady.

Calm. Focused.

He raised the gun.

The first shot rang out, cutting sharply through the noise. The bullet missed, striking the wall behind the creature and sending fragments scattering outward.

Aarav didn't react.

"FOCUS!" Rohan shouted, desperation bleeding into his voice. "I'm not dying here!"

The creature shrieked, the tentacle tightening further as it lifted him higher. Another limb rose, aligning directly with his chest. A killing strike.

Time seemed to slow, not because the world had changed, but because Aarav's perception had sharpened.

He watched.

Front. Right. Left. The pattern repeated again.

He waited longer this time.

The third strike came and passed.

The pause appeared.

One heartbeat.

That was enough.

Aarav fired.

The bullet cut cleanly through the air and struck the tentacle holding Rohan. Flesh tore apart on impact, dark fluid spraying outward as the grip loosened instantly.

Rohan dropped. He hit the ground hard, rolling across the terrace before finally stopping, gasping for air as he struggled to recover.

Alive.

The creature recoiled, letting out a distorted, furious scream as its movements faltered for a brief moment.

Aarav saw it. Beneath the twisted frame, near the center of its torso, something shifted. Subtle, hidden, but exposed just long enough to matter. A weak point.

He raised the gun again.

This time, there was no hesitation. No rush. Only certainty.

A faint smile formed. Not wide, not exaggerated, but sharp and controlled.

Mana: 4

He fired.

The bullet struck deep into the creature's abdomen, driving straight into the exposed point.

The reaction was immediate.

The creature screamed. This time not in rage, but in pain.

Its massive body staggered backward, tentacles thrashing violently as its movements became unstable and erratic.

Rohan looked up from the ground, breath still uneven, his expression shaken as he stared at Aarav.

"…what the hell are you…?" he whispered.

Aarav didn't answer. His eyes remained locked on the creature, unblinking, fully present in the moment.

The monster steadied itself, but something had changed. Its movements were no longer controlled. They were aggressive and focused on him.

Aarav raised the gun once more.

Mana: 3

His fingers were steady and his breathing even.

Behind him, Pranav lay still.

In front of him, the creature prepared to strike again.

And between the two,

Aarav stood.

Not fearless.

But no longer afraid.
