Haru Pov
I paced the length of my mother's chambers, my heart burning with a volatile mix of jealousy and rage. "I saw them, Mother! They were holding hands in the West Wing. It wasn't for show—there was a tenderness there that made my blood boil. How can you sit there so calmly while Eri steals everything from me?"
Lady Sato, the Regent, didn't move. she calmly poured her tea, the steam rising between us like a veil. She looked at me, not with pity, but with a sharp, calculating coldness.
"You are looking at this like a boy whose toy has been stolen, Haru," she said, her voice steady. "Look at it like a King instead."
"A King?" I scoffed. "I am nothing but a shadow while she wears the crown!"
"Sit down," she commanded. When I finally obeyed, she leaned forward. "You see their affection as a defeat. I see it as our greatest opportunity. If they are truly falling in love, then they are hand-delivering us the weapon we need to destroy them."
I frowned, confused. "What do you mean?"
"Think, Haru," she whispered. "The Blood Oath allowed this marriage for political stability, but the ancient laws and our religion are absolute. A same-sex union is forbidden as a permanent state. It is a sin against the succession. If they remain 'partners' only on paper, the Council stays quiet. But if they fall in love? If they make it a real relationship?"
A slow smirk spread across her face. "Then they violate the human law. They become heretics. A Queen who chooses a woman's heart over the kingdom's need for an heir is a Queen who can be legally stripped of her title."
I felt the anger in my chest begin to cool, replaced by a dark realization. "So... you want them to be together?"
"I want them to be obsessed with each other," Sato corrected, her eyes gleaming. "I want their love to become so loud that the Council cannot ignore the scandal. That is your weapon, my son. Do not try to tear them apart. Instead, push them closer. Let them drown in their feelings until the weight of the crown crushes them both."
"And Elara?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
Sato reached out and gripped my hand, her voice turning stern. "Forget your childhood obsession, Haru. There are thousands of women in the empire. If you want to be King, you must be willing to sacrifice a girl for a kingdom. You will be crowned King of Kazunaga not because you won her heart, but because you were smart enough to let Eri lose hers."
I looked at my mother, seeing the cold brilliance of her plan. She was right. If I played this correctly, Eri wouldn't just lose the throne—she would lose everything. And I would be the one standing over the ruins, holding the crown that chose me.
"And besides," regent Sato continued, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial hum, "Eri is currently making a very dangerous move. She is hunting down the shadows of corruption within the court. We know exactly who those corrupt officials are, don't we, Haru?"
I nodded slowly, a dark understanding dawning on me. "The Council, the Governors... even her own inner circle of advisers. They've been lining their pockets for decades."
"Exactly," Sato smirked, her eyes cold and predatory. "She thinks she is being the 'Superhero' of Kazunaga. She thinks she can cleanse the kingdom in a way even her father never could. But the more she digs, the more enemies she makes. Let her dig, Haru. Let her dig her own grave with her bare hands."
She leaned back, looking satisfied. "Every time she exposes a corrupt lord, she creates a powerful enemy who will want her head. While she is busy playing the righteous judge and getting distracted by her 'wife,' she is losing the support of the men who actually hold the power."
"So we just... wait?" I asked, my grip on my sword finally relaxing.
"We wait for the perfect moment," she replied. "Let her have her little victories for now. Let her feel powerful. Let her believe that her love for Elara is safe and that her kingdom is being purified. We will let her gather all the heat and all the hatred onto herself. And when the Council is angry enough, and when her 'forbidden' love is exposed..."
Sato reached out and mimicked a snapping motion with her fingers.
"We strike. At the right time, we won't just remove a Queen. We will remove a traitor. And you, my son, will be there to 'save' Kazunaga from the chaos she created."
I looked at my mother and felt a cold, calculated chill. The rage I felt earlier was gone, replaced by a patient, hungry ambition.
"The higher she climbs," I whispered, "the harder she will fall."
"Precisely," Sato whispered back. "Now, go. Act like the loyal friend. Be the shoulder Elara leans on. But never forget—every smile you give them is just a countdown to their end."
