Note: This is a bit of a long read, but is filled with good additional info!
The ShinyoInstitute, also commonly referred to as The Institute is an educational institution and academy made to identify/scout, educate, and regulate individuals capable of perceiving and manipulating Reiki. Its primary objective is to foster the next generation of Exorcists capable of eliminating the threat of Yurei while maintaining strict secrecy regarding supernatural activity.
The Institute operates under a dual structure of on-the-field experience and monitored and/or specialized training exercises, ensuring that students are capable fighters, investigators, and overall Exorcists by the time they graduate.
The Institute is a boarding school with a dormitory system that executes a six-day school week where the only day off is Sunday.
1. Institute Structure & Curriculum
The Shinyo Institute is divided into multiple divisions:
First-Year Division (Class 1-A / 1-B / 1-C / 1-F )
Entry-level students who are primarily Late Bloomers, newly scouted individuals, or young clansmen from Exorcist Clans who have reached the proper age to enroll at the Shinto Institute.
First years primarily focus on controlling their Reiki and Ketsugojin in order to prepare them for future field tests/missions and practical training lessons. The teachers are trusted to regulate their students' training regiments and education as they see fit, so the lessons and curriculum each student has is different depending on their teacher. This is an universal fact for students of the First-Year Divison and the Second-Year Division.
The beginning of the school year is often filled with training exams and lessons for teachers to grow knowledge of their students abilities, strengths, and limits. Field tests and/or missions are given out after in order to give First Years valuable on-the-field experience.
First years are seperated into four different "classes" that are supposed to symbolize their level of skill and control as new students.
Class 1-A are the elite of the elite and are often the most talented and prodigious students of the entire first-year classes. They are meant to uphold the standards of what first-years should strive to be. They're typically the strongest first-years who come from Exorcist Clans and expected to become the brightest and strongest of the new generation of students year after year.
Class 1-B are the self-proclaimed "middle child" of the Shinyo Institute due to the fact they're overshadowed by their rivals Class 1-A. However, they are still highly-competent and many Class 1-B students are incredibly strong students who come from Exorcist Clans or at least have familial connections to at least one Exorcist in their family.
Class 1-C is the real middle child of the Shinyo Institute. They're are the mediocre or "average" first-year students of the Shinyo Institute. Many of them are in more supportive roles, but this isn't universal.
Class 1-F is the Black Sheep of the Shinyo Institute. A class that has only recently been created due to the shocking increase of Late Awakenings in the past ten years. Class 1-F is meant for Late Bloomers or students who struggle to control their Ketsugojin and/or Reiki. Some students of Class 1-F haven't even awakened their Ketsugojin, but show the ability to control their Reiki and perceive Yurei.
Certain classes have more privileges or freedoms depending on their status. Class 1-A are admitted and expected to take on harder practical training exams and lessons or field tests due to the fact that they're supposed to be the "best of the best".
The privileges gradually decrease with each class, with Class 1-F having the least amount due to the fact that mostly Late Bloomers with little control over their Reiki or Ketsugojin occupy that class. Class 1-F gets heavily monitored due to their volatile nature.
Second-Year Division ( Class 2-A / 2-B / 2-C )
Intermediate Exorcists who were able to survive their first year and have proven themselves to be able to control their Reiki and Ketsugojin at a high and precise level. While the curriculum in the First-Year Division is more formative, their is a notable jump in the difficulty and complexity of the lessons and classes in the Second-Year Division.
The Second Year Division focus on tactics and taking on leadership roles. Second years are expected to be leaders for their juniors, and the Shinyo Institute operates as a "Run by Students" institution in certain situations.
Second years have much, much more freedom when compared to first years. The beginning of the year starts off with grueling lessons and high-pressure field tests that put students into leadership roles whether they like it or not. After that, they begin to take on field missions and tests that are longer in duration and more difficult. Certain students are given the freedom to take these missions by themselves
The Second Year Division is separated into classes in a similar structure as the First Year Division, except there is no F-Class meant for Late Bloomers. The purpose and reputation of each class is pretty much the same, except for the fact that is widely accepted that the weakest second year will be stronger than a first year on average. This is not a universal fact, however.
Third-Year Division
Highly-experienced students who have managed to live through their first two years at the Shinyo Institute with varying levels of difficulty. Students in the Third-Year Division are very experienced and are on the border of becoming a fully-fledged Exorcist.
Unlike the two other divisions, students in the Third-Year Division are not separated into classes. Instead, they are taken outside of the Shinyo Institute and put into the work force to work as apprentices for fully-fledged and professional Exorcists. Third years are given the most freedom out, and are barely ever in the Shinyo Institute.
The Third Year Division has a rare responsibility entrusted onto them, which is scouting Reiki Manipulators and those who have experienced Late Awakenings and bringing them back to the Shinyo Institute. They often do this alongside the Exorcist that they work under.
Aside from that, they take on difficult field missions alongside the professional Exorcist they work under in order to prepare them for their future. They also take on solo missions regularly.
Instructor Division
Shinyo Institute alumni who have become fully-fledged, certified, and professional Exorcists. Despite the name, not every Instructor is a teacher, as some take on different roles and responsibilities.
Midori Sagawa is a prime example, as despite being the School Doctor and the Lead Medic of the Shinyo Institute, she is sometimes referred to as Instructor Sagawa instead of Nurse Midori.
Instructor Ito focuses on security and scouting those who have experienced Late Awakenings,
Instructor Matsuda focuses on evaluating Late Bloomers. You get it now!
Instructors have permission to supervise and evaluate students, host lessons and training events, deploy field missions/tests, and are also responsible for containing emergencies. Each Instructor is trusted to do whatever they want with these permissions, to an certain extent of course.
2. Student Code & Rules
All students are required to follow a set of rules:
Rule 1: Preserve and protect civilian ignorance of Yurei and Reiki.
Rule 2: Prioritize survival of self and team, no matter what.
Rule 3: Do not engage with Yurei in populated areas unless absolutely necessary.
Rule 4: Always respect Instructor command and authority.
Rule 5: Never harm a normal human being through Reiki or Ketsugojin usage. It is absolutely necessary that you also never overlook a threat that harms a normal human being. However, exceptions shall be made for situations in which it is necessary to preserve the student's life or the lives of others.
Disciplinary action changes depending on severity.
3. Uniform
Shinyo Institute uniforms are designed for both practicality and efficiency, despite often being described as "tight" when it is first worn.
A standard Shinyo Institute uniform is made up of dark combat fabric infused with Reiki-resistant and shock absorbent fibers. It comes with a lightweight black blazer and a flexible white undershirt. It has adjustable pants or skirt for mobility and the Institute insignia is located on the sleeves. This uniform is easily customizable, and Instructors aren't strict and don't really care if students break the dress code.
The uniform for Instructors comes with a longer trenchcoat instead of a blazer, with name tags on the chest and Instiute insignia on the sleeves. Certain instructors write different uniforms, such as Kojiro-sensei, who is (uniquely) one of the only Instructors who don't go by Instructor.
