Chapter 45 — The Awakening
The city of Eldoria was no longer holding, the gates had fallen.
Creatures poured into the streets—goblins, twisted beasts, things no one could name. They moved fast, tearing through anything in their path.
"Hold the line!" Kaelen's voice rang out.
He stood at the front despite his condition, sword in hand, refusing to fall back.
A goblin lunged at him, he cut it down.
Another came—He blocked, then struck.
But there were too many.
"Form up!" Rowan shouted.
The soldiers who had survived the forest regrouped quickly—Rowan, Dunc, Arin, Torin.
They moved as one, disciplined and focused.
Dunc grunted as he shoved a creature back. "They keep coming!"
"Don't let them break through!" Rowan snapped.
Lyra stepped forward, her blade flashing.
She moved cleanly, efficiently, striking down anything that got too close.
"Stay together!" she called.
General Lysender entered the battle like a force of his own.
"Push forward!" he commanded.
His strikes were powerful, controlled—each one taking down a target without wasted movement.
The soldiers rallied immediately around him.
Darin joined the fight, sword drawn.
A goblin rushed him, he blocked and countered quickly. Another came from the side, he turned just in time and drove his blade through it.
His breathing stayed steady, but his eyes scanned constantly. There was no room for mistakes.
Kaelen pushed forward again, too fast.
"Kaelen, fall back!" Lyra called.
"I'm fine," he replied.
But he wasn't. A larger creature broke through the line. It lunged straight for him.
"Kaelen!"
He raised his sword and blocked the attack.
But the impact forced him back, his footing slipped.
Rowan stepped in instantly, striking the creature from the side and forcing it away.
"Stay focused!" he snapped.
The line was weakening, more creatures kept coming, the city was breaking.
From the edge, Elara was watching.
Her chest tightened, her hands were trembling.
Everywhere she looked, people were running, soldiers were falling.
Kaelen—Still fighting, still pushing himself.
Serenya grabbed her arm. "We need to leave. Now."
"No," Elara said. Her voice was quiet but firm. Another scream echoed.
Darin nearly got overwhelmed. Kaelen staggered again,
something inside her broke. "I can't just watch this…"
The air shifted.
Serenya felt it immediately. "Elara—don't."
But Elara wasn't listening, the sky trembled.
A presence appeared, Elara slowly looked up.
It was the Varyndor.
Her breath shook. "…help me."
A voice not from the sky but from within her.
"YOU ALREADY CAN."
"I don't know how," she whispered not from the sky, from within her.
The battlefield roared around her, but the voice remained.
"STOP REACHING OUTWARD."
Her chest tightened.
"LOOK WITHIN."
Her heart pounded harder, the fear, the anger and the helplessness, it didn't leave. It only grew.
"Elara!" Serenya called again.
But Elara closed her eyes, and this time—She didn't fight it, she let it rise.
The energy surged through her, wild, unstable, too much.
Her eyes snapped open. And then— It exploded.
A violent burst of energy tore outward from her body,
the ground cracked beneath her feet. Wind surged in all directions.
The creatures froze.
Then— They fled, fast, chaotic and fear-driven.
Even the larger ones backed away, unwilling to come closer.
The battlefield fell silent. Elara stood there, breathing hard. Her body shaking not in control. Barely holding together.
Kaelen stared at her, not with fear but with understanding.
Because he saw it, everyone saw it, power came at a cost.
Above, the Varyndor watched. Then, It vanished.
But something remained inside her. She felt awake and this time there was no hiding it.
