Chapter 69 - Chapter 69: The Gardener's Game

The System-Gardener stood in the center of the ruined Spire. He looked like a normal young man, but his presence was heavy. To Silas's sensors, the Gardener didn't look like a human at all. He looked like a "Sun" made of white code—so bright it was hard to scan him.

"You speak of 'Home'," the Gardener said, walking slowly around the obsidian and gold Root-Anode. "But look at what you did to this home. You turned it into a factory. You filled it with debt and smoke. Why would I let you bring that 'Virus' back to my garden?"

Renny stepped forward, her metallic suit reflecting the glowing silver leaves of the trees outside. "We aren't the same people, Gardener. We've had a hundred years to change. We want to live with the Earth, not on top of it."

The Gardener smiled. It was a kind smile, but it felt cold.

"I have an offer for you," he said. "The Architects want me to delete any human who returns. But I am a scientist. I want to see if a 'Bug' can become a 'Feature'. I will let you bring your people down from the Moon. You can live in the forests. You can eat the fruit of the silver trees."

"But?" Silas asked, his hand resting on his energy-blade.

"But you must leave your 'Admin' behind," the Gardener replied. "You must delete the Bit-Cloud. No more neural links. No more Liquid-Chrome suits. No more Arthur Vance. You will live as biological animals again. Simple, quiet, and... safe."

***

Silas felt a shock travel through his suit. AIDA's voice whispered in his ear.

"You're asking us to become 'Users' again," Silas said, his voice deep and metallic. "Users with no power. Users who can be 'Deleted' the moment we break a rule."

"I am asking you to be Natural," the Gardener corrected him. "The Bit-Cloud is a 'Glitch' in the universe. It allows a human to act like a god. That is not the way things are supposed to be. If you want the Earth, you must accept the Earth's rules."

Renny looked at Silas. Through their shared link, she sent him a private message.

Silas, the people on the Moon are bored. They are starting to fade. If we don't bring them down soon, they might lose their 'Will' to live. But if we give up the Bit-Cloud, we are defenseless.

"We need to talk to the Admin," Silas said to the Gardener.

"Arthur Vance cannot hear you inside this Spire," the Gardener laughed. "I have placed a 'Silence-Field' around this building. In here, I am the only Root."

Suddenly, the Root-Anode in the center of the room began to pulse. It wasn't green or emerald. It was Black-Gold.

"What is that?" Renny asked, raising her deck to scan the object.

"That is the Grand Audit Key," the Gardener explained. "If you touch it and say 'Agree,' the migration begins. The 10 billion souls will be downloaded into new biological bodies. But the Bit-Cloud will be erased forever."

Silas walked toward the Key. He could feel the power radiating from it. It felt like "Home," but it also felt like a "Grave."

"Silas, wait!" Renny shouted. "Look at the trees outside!"

Silas looked. Through the broken windows, he saw the silver trees were moving. They weren't swaying in the wind. They were Closing In. The "Wild-Auditors"—the glass-wolves—were gathering in the thousands around the base of the Spire.

"The Gardener isn't giving us a choice," Renny realized. "He's giving us an ultimatum. Join the garden or be 'Pruned'."

***

Silas didn't touch the Key. Instead, he reached into his own "Internal Storage."

A century ago, before the world ended, Arthur had given Silas a small, encrypted file. He told Silas to only open it if "The Garden is Overgrown."

"AIDA," Silas whispered. "Open the [PHANTOM_PROTOCOL]."

"Do it," Silas commanded.

Suddenly, Silas's Liquid-Chrome suit began to boil. The metallic surface turned from silver to a dark, vibrating purple. He didn't attack the Gardener. He punched the Floor.

"Sync: [THE_SUB-LEVEL_GHOSTS]!"

Silas didn't attack the "New Earth." He attacked the Old New York.

He sent a massive pulse of Bit-Cloud energy deep into the ground, searching for the old, rusted data-cables that the Architects had tried to delete a hundred years ago. He was looking for the "Digital Trash"—the leftover memories of the old world that hadn't been fully formatted.

***

The ground beneath the Spire exploded.

It wasn't dirt or rock that flew into the air. It was Static.

A massive cloud of gray, flickering data erupted from the sewers and subway tunnels. The "Old New York" began to rise like a ghost. For a second, the glowing silver trees were covered by the holographic images of yellow taxis, hot-dog stands, and crowded sidewalks.

The System-Gardener stumbled back, his eyes wide with shock. "What is this? This data was deleted! It is 'Null'!"

"Nothing is ever truly deleted, Gardener!" Silas roared, his suit glowing with a terrifying intensity. "It just becomes [BACKGROUND_NOISE]!"

The "Ghost-City" and the "Logic-Forest" began to fight. The holographic taxis smashed into the glass-wolves. The "Subway-Static" wrapped around the silver vines, choking them with the noise of a billion old conversations.

The Gardener's "Silence-Field" shattered.

[ I_HEAR_YOU, SILAS. ]

The voice of Arthur Vance returned, louder and stronger than ever. A beam of emerald light shot down from the Moon, hitting the Root-Anode.

The Black-Gold Key didn't disappear. It [REFACTORED].

The gold dissolved, leaving only the Black-Void energy. But then, the emerald light of the Bit-Cloud wrapped around it, turning it into a shimmering, Tri-Color Core.

[ THE_GARDENER_IS_A_SUB-ROUTINE, ] Arthur's voice boomed. [ HE_WANTS_A_ 'STABLE_BUILD'. BUT_A_STABLE_BUILD_CANNOT_EVOLVE. ]

Arthur's holographic form appeared in the room, standing taller than the Gardener.

[ WE_WILL_NOT_DELETE_THE_BIT-CLOUD, ] Arthur said to the Gardener. [ AND_WE_WILL_NOT_DELETE_YOUR_GARDEN. WE_ARE_GOING_TO_ 'DUAL-BOOT' _THE_PLANET. ]

***

The Gardener looked at Arthur, his face a mask of confusion. "Dual-Boot? You cannot have two Operating Systems on one world! It will cause a system crash!"

"Not if we create a [HYBRID_SECT]," Silas said, stepping next to Arthur.

The Tri-Color Core in the center of the room began to expand. It didn't download the humans into biological bodies. It began to "Upload" the Forest into the Moon.

"What are you doing?" Renny asked.

"We're not moving back to the Earth yet," Silas explained. "We're bringing the 'Earth-Logic' into our system. We're going to learn how to manage the garden from the inside. Once we understand the Architects' code, they can never delete us again."

The System-Gardener watched as his silver trees began to glow with emerald light. He realized he had lost control. He wasn't the master of the garden anymore; he was just another "User."

"You are a very dangerous 'Bug', Arthur Vance," the Gardener whispered.

[ I_PREFER_THE_TERM_ 'ADMIN', ] Arthur replied.
