Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 — The Mark

The three of them stood in the dim kitchen while the wind outside rattled softly against the windows.

For the first time since arriving at Ravenswood Hill, Elena felt like she was standing at the center of something much older than the house itself.

She looked from Lucian to Aldren.

"What exactly did I wake up down there?"

Lucian hesitated.

Aldren didn't.

"The Watcher doesn't merely observe the house," the old man said calmly.

"It studies the people who live in it."

Elena frowned.

"Why?"

Aldren tilted his head slightly.

"To choose."

The word hung in the air.

Lucian's voice cut in immediately.

"That's not happening."

Aldren ignored him.

"When the Watcher wakes," he continued, "it searches for someone capable of hearing it."

Elena felt a strange pressure building inside her chest.

"Hearing it like… the whisper?"

"Yes."

Lucian shook his head.

"Stop."

But Aldren continued speaking to Elena.

"The chosen person becomes something very rare," he said quietly.

"A bridge."

The word sent a chill through her.

"A bridge to what?"

"The world above."

Lucian stepped forward suddenly.

"That's enough."

But something interrupted him.

A sharp burning sensation flared along Elena's wrist.

She gasped.

The pain was sudden and intense, like a hot needle pressing into her skin.

"What—"

She grabbed her wrist instinctively.

The sensation pulsed again.

Stronger.

Lucian immediately moved closer.

"Elena, what's wrong?"

"It burns."

She lifted her arm slightly.

The candlelight revealed something beneath her skin.

At first it looked like a shadow.

Then the shape darkened.

Lines slowly formed, spreading across the pale surface of her wrist like ink soaking through paper.

A symbol began to appear.

Elena's breathing quickened.

"What is that?"

Lucian grabbed her arm gently and turned it toward the light.

His expression changed instantly.

"No…"

Aldren leaned closer, curiosity lighting his eyes.

"Well," he murmured.

"That didn't take long."

The symbol finished forming.

An eye.

Exactly like the carvings in the chamber below.

But this one was alive with faint darkness, the shape pulsing slightly beneath her skin.

Elena felt the burning fade slowly.

"What does it mean?" she asked quietly.

Lucian didn't answer right away.

He stared at the mark like someone seeing a nightmare become real.

Finally he spoke.

"The Watcher has seen you."

Elena swallowed.

"And?"

Lucian's voice grew softer.

"And now it won't stop."

Outside, the wind suddenly rose into a howl.

The windows rattled violently.

Somewhere upstairs—

A door creaked open slowly.

The long hallway of Ravenswood Hill stretched into darkness.

And far below the house, beneath stone and earth—

Something ancient began to move.
