Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – Heartbeats in the Dark

The forest was alive with shadows. Every branch and leaf seemed to move even when the wind did not blow. Isabella ran beside Alexander, her chest heaving, sweat and fear mixing on her skin. Her hand was still in his, and somehow that gave her courage even when her legs ached and her lungs burned.

Alexander moved with effortless grace, stepping over roots and ducking under low-hanging branches. Isabella tried to follow, but the forest seemed determined to slow her down. She stumbled once and Alexander was there instantly, his arms steadying her.

Are you okay? he asked softly, his dark eyes scanning her face.

Yes, I am fine, she whispered, though her voice trembled.

She could not help noticing how close he was, how warm, and how his presence made her heart race for reasons other than fear.

Alexander did not comment. He only gave her a quick glance and pulled her forward again, leading her deeper into the shadows. Every sound the snap of a branch or the rustle of leaves made her freeze and her heart skip.

Why do you always stay so calm? she asked, gasping for breath. Even when people are chasing us.

Because panic does not help anyone, he said simply, without looking at her.

Some people like me panic very effectively, she said, forcing a small laugh though she felt anything but funny.

I have noticed, he murmured, his voice low.

Her cheeks warmed at the way he said it, and she looked away, trying not to let him see. She had been running from danger for weeks, hiding and worrying constantly, but when she was near him, she felt strangely safe. Her stomach fluttered, and she did not know whether she liked that feeling or not.

They ran in silence for a while, the forest thickening around them. Alexander's hand on hers was firm and strong, guiding her with quiet confidence. Isabella's mind wandered to the few times she had been this close to him, and she realized how much she depended on him not just to survive, but to feel safe in the chaos.

I am glad you are here, she whispered softly, almost as if saying it aloud would make it true.

He glanced at her, those dark eyes scanning her face, softening when he realized she was not joking. I am glad you are here too, he said quietly.

A small smile escaped her lips, though the tension of the night remained heavy. She tried to tease him. You make danger sound romantic.

Romantic? he asked, one eyebrow raising. I was just being factual.

You call holding my hand factual? she asked, teasing despite her racing heart.

I call it strategic, he said softly, leaning slightly closer.

Strategic? she echoed, her cheeks warming. You mean so I do not run into trouble?

Yes, he admitted quietly, and she felt her heartbeat skip.

She wanted to say something more, to tell him that she did not just want to survive, she wanted to fight beside him, to prove herself. But the forest had its own plans. A snapping of branches nearby made them both freeze. She pressed against him instinctively, her hand tightening around his.

Stay close, he whispered.

I am, she whispered back, her voice barely audible.

He gave her a small nod, then motioned for her to follow as he moved silently. Shadows danced around them, and every step they took seemed louder than it should have been.

They came to a small clearing, and Alexander stopped. He scanned the edges of the forest carefully. Isabella crouched beside him, trying to control her breathing. Her legs ached, and her chest burned, but she refused to let fear overwhelm her.

There are more of them, he said quietly.

Her stomach tightened. How many? she asked.

At least four, he said. Professionals. Be ready, he warned.

Her eyes widened. Professionals meant trained, dangerous, and ruthless. She had only seen amateurs before. The thought made her stomach twist, but at the same time, she felt a strange determination. She was not going to hide anymore.

Alexander glanced at her, noticing the fire in her eyes. You really want to fight, do you?

Yes, she whispered, her voice firm. I want to help, not just follow.

He studied her for a moment, a faint smile touching his lips. You are brave, he said. Maybe even too brave.

Her cheeks burned at his words, and she tried to hide the small smile. You are impossible, she said, trying to sound annoyed.

And yet, you are still here, he teased softly.

I am, she admitted quietly, not meeting his gaze.

A sudden sound of tires crunching on gravel interrupted the moment. Both of them froze. In the distance, headlights cut through the darkness. Two black cars approached slowly. Isabella's heart skipped.

Again? she whispered.

Yes, he said quietly. And this time, they will not warn us.

Alexander grabbed her hand tightly. Stay close, he said.

I am trying, she whispered, her voice trembling, though not with fear alone.

They ran deeper into the forest, the trees providing cover, their shadows long and dark. Isabella stumbled again, and Alexander caught her instantly. Their faces were only inches apart.

You are okay? he asked softly.

Yes, she said, her voice catching.

He did not move away immediately. You have to stay close, he said.

I am, she whispered, her heart beating faster than it should have.

He leaned slightly closer. Closer, he murmured.

She flushed but did not pull away. You are very annoying, she whispered.

And yet, you do not let go, he said, a small smile on his lips.

I am strategic, she said, echoing his earlier words.

I like your strategies, he said softly.

A branch snapped behind them, and they both froze. Isabella pressed herself closer instinctively.

If I survive tonight, she whispered, I will throw pillows at you for making me nervous.

Deal, he said quietly. But only after I keep you alive.

Her cheeks burned. That sounded like more than just survival, and she did not know what to do with that feeling.

Finally, they reached a small abandoned cabin hidden in the forest. Alexander checked the area carefully before letting her step inside. Isabella collapsed on the floor, gasping for breath.

You make surviving look so easy, she said, though she knew it was not easy.

He knelt beside her. You did well, he said softly. You kept up.

I was not just keeping up, she said, her voice faint. I could have helped more.

You already did, he said quietly.

She looked at him, confusion and admiration mixing in her eyes. How?

You stayed alive, he said. That is more important than anything right now.

Her cheeks warmed. She looked down, feeling the closeness and warmth between them. For the first time, the fear did not feel overwhelming. Being near him made her feel stronger and braver.

Then a faint sound from outside echoed, the scraping of metal against stone. Isabella's stomach dropped.

They are coming, he said quietly.

Again? she whispered.

Yes, he said. And this time, they will not give a warning.

She glanced at him. Then whispered, Then we fight?

He looked at her, eyes soft but firm. Yes, but we fight smart. Together.

She swallowed hard. Somehow, just hearing him say together made her feel braver than ever.

They prepared themselves, checking the cabin for hiding spots, setting up makeshift barricades. Alexander handed her a flashlight. Here, he said. You might need this.

I am not hiding, she said, though she held it tightly.

No, but you might need to see, he said gently.

They crouched in the shadows, listening as the sounds of movement grew closer. The black cars approached slowly, tires crunching on gravel. Isabella's fingers brushed against his hand instinctively.

Do not let go, she whispered.

Never, he said softly.

Suddenly, a cold, familiar laugh echoed through the forest, cutting through the tension like a knife. Isabella froze.

Who is there? she whispered, her voice trembling.

Alexander's jaw tightened. It is her, he said quietly.

Isabella's heart skipped. Lara's presence was unmistakable. Behind her, more figures emerged from the shadows. They were surrounded.

Alexander whispered urgently, We have to move, now.

Isabella nodded, but before they could take a single step, a figure appeared directly in front of them, blocking the only escape.

You cannot run anymore, the figure said, and the words sent a chill through Isabella's body.

Alexander's dark eyes narrowed, and for the first time, she saw a flicker of worry cross his face.
