Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: White-Hot Momentum

The morning air inside the shipping container smelled of damp iron and saltwater.

Kai Rivers sat on the edge of his narrow cot, elbows resting on his knees, staring at the faint blue glow hovering in front of him.

The System interface floated silently in the dark.

Outside, the canal water sloshed gently against the concrete pillars of the bridge above his home. Somewhere in the distance, a drone hummed as it passed through the mist.

Kai barely heard it.

His attention was locked on the prompt floating in front of his eyes.

[SKILL POINT AVAILABLE]

[Select Upgrade Path…]

Several options appeared beneath the message. Tactical enhancements. Handling stabilizers. Sensor prediction.

Smart upgrades.

Safe upgrades.

But Kai's gaze remained fixed on one icon.

Kinetic Overdrive.

The description scrolled beside it.

A high-risk system that converts stunt energy into direct turbine acceleration.

Physical synchronization required.

Kai leaned back slowly, exhaling through his nose.

The turbine of the Stinger was old. Too old.

Nyx had patched it together with salvaged parts and stubborn optimism.

Using something like this could destroy it.

Or worse.

Kai stared through the interface as if it wasn't even there.

As if he could see something beyond it.

The Upper City.

Draven Slate.

The life that had been ripped away from him.

His fingers curled slowly.

"I don't need tricks," he muttered quietly.

His voice sounded rough in the empty room.

"I need to be faster than his memories."

He reached out.

His finger tapped the icon.

For half a second, nothing happened.

Then heat exploded through the base of his skull.

Kai gasped as a violent surge shot down his spine like liquid fire. His back arched as his muscles locked, fingers digging into the metal cot.

The world blurred.

It wasn't just information entering his brain.

It was something deeper.

Something physical.

A biological overwrite.

His heartbeat slammed against his ribs.

Hard.

Faster.

Faster.

The System whispered calmly in his mind.

[KINETIC OVERDRIVE INITIALIZED]

[Energy Conversion Ratio: Enhanced]

[Warning: Heart rate will synchronize with Turbine RPM during Boost Phases.]

Kai sucked in a sharp breath.

Then another.

The burning sensation faded slowly, leaving behind something strange.

Stillness.

He lifted his hands in front of his face.

They didn't tremble.

Not even slightly.

His movements felt sharper. Quicker. Like every nerve in his body had been rewired for speed.

Kai stood.

The rust was gone.

Now he felt like a loaded trigger.

The Municipal Docks

The edge of the municipal district looked like another world.

Clean canals replaced the murky ruins.

White marble walkways lined the water.

Glass towers reflected the bright morning sun across the surface of the canal like shards of light.

Kai eased the Switchblade into the dock where Nyx Vale was waiting.

She stood beside the hydrojet with a small fuel container at her feet, tightening the seal on one of the intake vents.

Her violet-streaked hair was damp from the morning mist.

When Kai stepped off the Switchblade, she paused.

Her eyes narrowed.

"You look… different."

Kai tilted his head slightly.

"Different how?"

Nyx wiped grease from her fingers onto a rag and walked closer, studying him.

"Like you're vibrating," she said. "Did you actually sleep last night, or did you spend the whole time drinking battery acid?"

Kai rested a hand on the Switchblade's handlebars.

The machine hummed faintly beneath his palm.

"I'm fine," he said. "Just ready to move."

Nyx crossed her arms slowly.

"You're buzzing like a live wire."

Despite the concern in her voice, she reached out and squeezed his arm briefly.

Her hand was warm.

Human.

A sharp contrast to the cold precision spreading through Kai's nerves.

"Just don't burn yourself out before we get to the real circuits," she muttered. "I can fix engines. Not hearts."

A soft mechanical whir interrupted them.

Both of them turned.

VECTOR glided toward them across the pier.

Its orange-and-white chassis gleamed under the sunlight, and a single blue optic pulsed steadily where its face should have been.

"Pilot Kai Rivers," the machine said.

"My database confirms successful completion of Trial Event One."

Nyx rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, yeah. Get to the point."

The bot continued.

"The second trial has been unlocked."

A holographic display appeared over the canal.

[Trial Event: Fountain Park Circuit]

[Classification: Technical Precision Track]

[Purpose: Evaluate high-speed maneuverability in restricted urban environments.]

Nyx let out a low whistle.

"Fountain Park? That place is packed with sensors."

The bot's optic flickered.

"Property damage is discouraged."

Kai swung onto the Switchblade's seat.

"But not disallowed," he said.

Nyx sighed.

"You're going to ignore that warning, aren't you?"

Kai started the engine.

"Probably."

Fountain Park

Fountain Park was beautiful.

Too beautiful.

Marble walkways curved around trimmed hedges and shining canals. Massive fountains launched glittering arcs of water into the air while tourist drones drifted lazily above the plaza.

It looked more like a luxury resort than a race course.

Kai rolled onto the starting grid.

Eight race-bots hovered beside him in perfect silence.

The System flickered.

[EVENT: FOUNTAIN PARK]

[CURRENT RANK: F-CLASS – SQUID]

[OBJECTIVE: FINISH FIRST]

Three red lights appeared above the canal.

Kai rolled his shoulders.

His heart started beating faster.

The turbine whined.

Then something strange happened.

The two rhythms began to match.

Thump.

Whine.

Thump.

Whine.

Nyx's voice crackled faintly through the comm.

"Try not to destroy the park, okay?"

Kai smirked.

"No promises."

The lights changed.

Red.

Red.

Green.

The Switchblade exploded forward.

The Kinetic Overdrive activated instantly.

Kai felt his heart synchronize with the screaming turbine as the hydrojet surged forward with brutal acceleration.

The exhaust flame turned from blue to a blinding white.

The first turn appeared ahead.

A brutal ninety-degree bend around a marble statue.

Kai didn't brake.

He leaned hard, his body moving with perfect synchronization with the machine. Water sprayed across his visor as the Switchblade drifted through the turn at impossible speed.

A ramp appeared near the park's central fountain.

Kai hit it.

The hydrojet launched skyward.

In midair he kicked both legs to the side.

A Can-Can stunt.

The System pulsed.

[Boost Energy +30%]

He landed hard and immediately accelerated again.

Another ramp appeared ahead.

From the dock, Nyx stared at the racing feed in disbelief.

Kai grinned.

"Let's see what you can really do."

He launched again.

This time he stretched his body behind the bike in a perfect Superman stunt.

The wind roared past him.

Then the next obstacle appeared.

The Great Museum.

A massive glass structure spanning the canal.

The System's racing line glowed bright blue.

Straight through the building.

Kai blinked once.

"…Seriously?"

But he was already moving too fast to reconsider.

He hit the grand staircase at one hundred sixty kilometers per hour.

The Switchblade launched into the air.

The glass wall shattered as he burst into the museum.

For a moment,

Everything went silent.

The hydrojet floated through the massive hall surrounded by ancient statues and glowing historical displays.

A giant holographic globe hovered in the center of the room.

Kai twisted the handlebars.

The Switchblade flipped forward in a clean Front Flip above an exhibit of ancient sea vessels.

"Sorry about the glass!" he shouted.

He smashed through the opposite wall in a rain of glittering shards and landed back in the canal.

"Overdrive."

The turbine ignited.

White flames erupted from the exhaust.

The Switchblade shot forward so fast the trailing bots looked frozen in place.

The finish line appeared seconds later.

Kai crossed it in a violent spray of water.

Kai drifted to a stop near the park's exit.

The Overdrive faded slowly.

But his heart didn't.

It kept racing violently inside his chest.

Sweat dripped down his face as he leaned over the handlebars.

Nyx pulled up beside him.

Her jaw dropped.

"You smashed through a museum," she said slowly.

Kai removed his helmet.

"Yeah."

"A museum, Kai."

He wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Did they catch me?"

Nyx opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

"…No."

She stared at him.

"You were just a blur."

The bot approached them calmly.

[RESULT: 1ST PLACE]

[TIME: 2:09.49]

[EARNINGS: $1,000]

[RANK PROGRESS: 45% TO E-CLASS]

Nyx looked down at the Switchblade.

Her expression shifted.

"Uh… Kai?"

He followed her gaze.

The engine casing glowed red-hot.

Heat shimmered above the turbine.

Nyx ran a hand through her hair.

"You're pushing that thing too hard."

Kai stared at the Upper City skyline in the distance.

Golden towers rising above the flooded world.

Draven Slate's kingdom.

His hands trembled slightly from leftover kinetic energy.

Nyx studied him carefully.

"You're changing," she said quietly.

Kai didn't answer.

His heart was still racing.

The System waited silently inside his mind.

And for the first time in two years,

Kai Rivers felt like a weapon pointed straight at the future.
