Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — The Awakening Flame

The pillar of fire roared into the night sky like a blazing beacon.

Flames spiraled around Kael's body, twisting and rising in a chaotic storm of heat and light. The ground beneath his feet cracked as glowing embers scattered across the village square.

Villagers stumbled backward in panic.

Some grabbed buckets of water from the well. Others simply ran.

Mira shielded her face from the heat.

"KAEL!" she shouted. "DO SOMETHING!"

Kael stared at his flaming hand in pure horror.

"I AM TRYING!"

The fire surged again.

A wave of heat blasted outward, knocking over a wooden stall nearby.

The Crimson Ash warriors instinctively stepped back, their hands gripping their weapons tightly.

But their commander, Valen Drax, did not move.

His golden eyes studied the raging flames with intense focus.

"A raw awakening," he murmured.

"Remarkable."

Another blast of fire erupted from Kael's palm.

The pillar above him grew taller, lighting the entire village like a second sunrise.

Kael groaned.

"WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?!"

Valen finally answered.

"The Fire Leaf is responding to your fear."

Kael blinked.

"That doesn't help!"

Valen crossed his arms calmly.

"Your body is not yet accustomed to the power it carries."

The flames whipped around Kael violently.

"It feels like my arm is turning into a volcano!"

Mira yelled from behind a water barrel.

"STOP PANICKING!"

"I WOULD LOVE TO!"

The ground trembled again.

Cracks spread across the dirt beneath Kael's feet as the firestorm intensified.

Valen's warriors exchanged uneasy glances.

One of them whispered to the commander,

"Should we restrain him?"

Valen shook his head.

"Impossible."

His eyes gleamed with fascination.

"If we interrupt the awakening now, the power could destroy the entire village."

That statement did not comfort the villagers.

Bran stood near the well, gripping his staff tightly as he watched the chaos unfold.

"…Just as the legends warned," he whispered.

Meanwhile, Kael felt like his entire body was burning from the inside.

The glowing leaf mark on his hand pulsed again.

Stronger.

Hotter.

Then suddenly—

The world vanished.

The flames disappeared.

The village disappeared.

Kael found himself standing in a vast ocean of fire.

Gigantic burning trees stretched across an endless horizon, their branches glowing like molten gold. Rivers of blazing light flowed between towering mountains made of flame.

The same fiery world he had seen before.

Kael looked around nervously.

"Oh great."

His voice echoed in the endless burning landscape.

"I'm back here again."

A deep, ancient voice rumbled through the fiery sky.

"Bearer of the Fire Leaf."

Kael spun around.

"Okay! There it is!"

He pointed at the sky.

"You! The mysterious voice!"

The flames in the sky twisted slowly.

"Your awakening has begun."

Kael frowned.

"Yeah, about that…"

He rubbed his burning hand.

"Could you maybe turn the power down a little?"

The voice did not respond immediately.

Instead, the fiery trees around him began glowing brighter.

Kael felt the heat in his chest grow stronger.

Like a second heartbeat made of fire.

"The Fire Leaf carries the will of the ancient flame."

Kael sighed.

"Of course it does."

"You must learn to command it."

Kael crossed his arms.

"And how exactly am I supposed to do that?"

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then the voice answered.

"Stand."

Kael blinked.

"I am standing."

"Feel the fire."

He looked down at his glowing hand.

"Trust me, I feel it."

"Do not resist it."

Kael hesitated.

"Not resist…?"

The fire in his chest pulsed again.

Hot.

Wild.

Chaotic.

Up until now, he had been trying to suppress it.

Trying to force it down.

Maybe that was the problem.

Kael slowly took a deep breath.

"Okay… let's try something else."

He closed his eyes.

Instead of pushing the fire away…

He let it flow.

The heat spread through his arm like a rushing river.

But this time—

It didn't hurt.

The flames surrounding him calmed slightly.

The ancient voice spoke again.

"Good."

Kael opened his eyes.

The fiery world shimmered.

Then it shattered like glass.

Kael gasped as the real world returned.

The village square reappeared.

The towering pillar of fire was still roaring above him.

But something had changed.

The flames surrounding Kael were no longer wild.

They moved slowly now.

Like a swirling cloak of fire.

Valen Drax's eyes widened slightly.

"…He's stabilizing."

Kael raised his hand.

The fire followed his movement.

The flames twisted into a spiral above his palm.

He stared at it in amazement.

"…Whoa."

Mira slowly lowered the barrel she had been hiding behind.

"…Did you just do that on purpose?"

Kael nodded slowly.

"I think so."

He moved his fingers again.

The swirling fire shifted shape.

Smaller now.

Controlled.

The villagers stared in stunned silence.

Valen smiled.

"A natural talent."

Kael looked at him.

"Okay, so… good news."

He raised his hand again.

The pillar of fire above the village began shrinking.

The flames collapsed inward, slowly fading until only a faint glow remained around Kael's arm.

The square returned to darkness.

Lanterns flickered softly.

The chaos was over.

For now.

Kael exhaled heavily.

"…That was exhausting."

Mira walked up to him cautiously.

"You're not going to explode again, right?"

"I really hope not."

She looked at his hand.

The leaf mark still glowed faintly.

"Okay," she said slowly. "That was… actually kind of impressive."

Kael grinned weakly.

"I feel impressive."

Valen stepped forward again.

Now his expression held something new.

Respect.

"Well done," the commander said calmly.

Kael scratched his head.

"Thanks?"

Valen studied him carefully.

"The Fire Leaf rarely chooses someone so young."

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"How old are most fire wizards?"

Valen shook his head.

"They are not wizards."

His gaze sharpened.

"They are weapons."

The villagers shifted uneasily at that word.

Valen continued,

"Which is why you must come with us."

Kael sighed.

"Right. That again."

Valen gestured toward the sky.

"You saw what happened tonight."

Kael glanced at the scorched ground around him.

"…Yeah."

"If you remain here," Valen said calmly, "your power will eventually destroy this village."

Mira frowned.

"That's not guaranteed."

Valen's eyes flicked toward her.

"No."

He paused.

"But it is likely."

Kael rubbed his neck.

"I really don't want to burn down my hometown."

Bran stepped forward slowly.

His face was serious.

"Kael."

The boy looked at him.

"Yes?"

Bran sighed heavily.

"The commander is right."

Mira turned sharply.

"Bran!"

The old man shook his head.

"The Fire Leaf has chosen him."

He looked at Kael with a mixture of pride and sadness.

"And that path no longer belongs to this village."

Kael was silent for a moment.

The night wind moved gently through the square.

Finally, he looked back at Valen.

"…If I go with you," Kael said, "what happens next?"

Valen answered simply.

"You will be trained."

"Trained to do what?"

The commander's golden eyes gleamed faintly.

"To master the flame."

Kael glanced around the village one last time.

The familiar buildings.

The well.

The market stalls.

The place he had grown up.

Then he sighed.

"…Alright."

Mira stared at him.

"You're seriously considering this?"

Kael shrugged.

"Better than accidentally burning everything down."

Valen nodded once.

"A wise decision."

But before anyone could say anything else—

A sudden roar echoed from the distant forest.

A deep, monstrous sound.

The ground trembled faintly.

Valen's warriors instantly drew their weapons.

Kael blinked.

"…What was that?"

Bran's face went pale.

"Oh no."

Another roar shook the night.

This one louder.

Closer.

Something massive was crashing through the trees outside the village.

Valen turned toward the forest road.

His expression hardened instantly.

"…A flame beast."

Mira blinked.

"A what?"

The trees at the edge of the village suddenly exploded outward.

A gigantic creature burst from the darkness.

Its body was covered in black stone-like armor, glowing with cracks of molten fire. Smoke poured from its jaws as it roared into the night sky.

The villagers screamed.

The monster's burning eyes locked directly onto Kael.

Valen drew his sword slowly.

"The awakening surge…"

His voice was calm.

"But it also attracted predators."

Kael stared at the massive creature in disbelief.

"…You've got to be kidding me."

The monster roared again and charged straight into the village.

Valen pointed his blade forward.

"Crimson Ash Order!"

His warriors stepped into formation instantly.

"Prepare for battle!"

Kael looked at his glowing hand.

Then at the charging monster.

"…Okay."

He cracked his knuckles nervously.

"Guess we're doing this."
