Chapter 4 - THE IMPOSSIBLE BOND

DANTE'S POV

The abandoned warehouse smells like rust and old metal. Dante paces while Kiera sits against the far wall, her hand still glowing with the Heartstone embedded in her palm. Outside, sirens wail through the streets of Aurion Prime. The entire city is looking for them. The entire galaxy is about to be looking for them.

Dante needs to understand what's happening to his body.

He walks toward the warehouse door. Ten feet away from Kiera. Nothing. He feels the connection hum but there's no pain. Twenty feet. Still nothing. He keeps going. Thirty feet. Forty. Fifty.

At around eighty feet, something shifts.

It's subtle at first. A pressure in his chest. A tightness in his throat. He keeps going just to be sure. Just to understand the exact limits of whatever this thing has done to them.

At a hundred and five feet, his legs stop working.

Dante collapses. Not slowly. Not gradually. One moment he's walking and the next moment his body simply refuses to function. Pain shoots through his chest like lightning. It's not his pain. He knows what his pain feels like. This is someone else's panic bleeding into him. Someone else's terror.

Kiera's terror.

He can feel her scrambling to her feet. He can feel her running toward him. He can feel her fear that he's dying. That something is breaking inside him. That she's losing him before she even knew what he was.

The moment she touches him, the pain stops.

Dante gasps for breath. His body is shaking. Sweat runs down his face. He looks up at her and sees the same shock reflected in her violet eyes.

"What just happened?" she demands.

"I tested the distance," Dante says. His voice sounds wrecked. "We can't be more than a hundred feet apart. If we try to separate, it feels like dying."

Kiera's face goes pale. She pulls her hand away from him and immediately the pressure returns. Not as bad as before but enough to make both of them wince. She puts her hand back and the relief is almost instant.

"We're bonded," she says flatly. "The crystal bonded us permanently."

"It seems that way."

Dante pushes himself up from the ground. His legs are shaky but they hold his weight. He looks at her and for the first time, really looks. The woman in black stealth gear is gone. In her place is someone else entirely.

Silver hair cut short and practical. Violet eyes that catch the light from her glowing palm. A face that's too young to have done the things he's heard the Phantom do. She's smaller than he expected. Thinner. Like she's been running so hard for so long that her body forgot how to rest.

Recognition hits him like a physical blow.

He knows those eyes. He's seen them in wanted posters across criminal networks. He's heard stories about them in underground bars from people who claim they've worked with her. He's spent three years trying to outthink someone with those eyes and failing every single time.

"You're the Phantom," he says slowly.

Kiera stares at him. Her hand tightens on the Heartstone and the light flares brighter. Dante feels her rage spike through the bond. Pure, white-hot rage that feels like it's going to burn him alive.

"And you're the Shadow Wolf," she says through gritted teeth. "The arrogant bastard who outbid me on the Meridian Crown six months ago."

Dante remembers that job. He'd been hired to acquire the crown for a collector on Vex Station. He never expected another thief to be after the same target. Never expected to find himself in a bidding war with someone he'd never met. He won the auction but barely. And afterwards, when he dug into who he'd beaten, he found nothing. Just whispers about the Phantom.

Just myth and legend.

Now the myth is sitting in an abandoned warehouse with blood on her jacket and fury burning in her eyes.

"I didn't know it was you," Dante says.

"Of course you didn't. That's the whole point of being invisible." Kiera stands up and paces away from him. She goes exactly ninety-five feet before the pressure starts building in both their chests. She stops immediately and turns back. "This is a nightmare. This is an actual nightmare."

"We'll figure it out," Dante says. "We'll find someone who understands Xelthari artifacts and they'll unbond us and then—"

"And then what?" Kiera cuts him off. "We split the Heartstone? We go our separate ways? We pretend this never happened?" Her voice rises. "My face is on every wanted poster in the galaxy right now. So is yours. The Empire knows my real name. Zara Vex knows I failed her. Every bounty hunter from here to the outer rim is looking for us."

Dante feels her desperation through the bond. Feels the weight of everything crashing down on her. She spent five years being invisible. Five years building a reputation as the Phantom. Five years keeping her true identity secret. And in one night, all of it is gone.

He understands that better than she probably knows.

"I'm sorry," he says. "I didn't plan on you being there. I didn't plan on any of this."

"That makes two of us."

Kiera reaches up and unties the scarf covering her face. She pulls it away and Dante sees her fully for the first time. The scar on her left cheekbone. The determination in her jaw. The exhaustion in her eyes that has nothing to do with tonight.

She looks like someone who's been running her whole life.

"For three years, I've been trying to beat you to jobs," Dante says quietly. "I've studied your patterns. I've learned how you think. I've built my entire reputation as the Shadow Wolf on being better than the Phantom."

"Well, congratulations," Kiera says bitterly. "You beat me tonight. And now we're stuck together forever as punishment."

"Is that really so bad?" The words come out before Dante can stop them.

Kiera looks at him like he's insane. "You're serious? You just became the most wanted man in the galaxy. We can't be more than a hundred feet apart. Every resource the Empire has is looking for us right now. And you're asking if being stuck with me is bad?"

"I'm asking if maybe..." Dante trails off. He can feel her through the bond. Feel the fear underneath the anger. Feel the loneliness that's been eating her alive. "Maybe we don't have to figure this out alone."

Before Kiera can respond, something changes.

The warehouse goes silent.

Not just quiet. Silent in a way that feels wrong. The sirens outside have stopped. The ambient hum of the city has faded. Even their breathing seems too loud in the suddenly empty space.

Then every screen in the city lights up at once.

Dante can see them through the warehouse windows. Billboards. Store fronts. Traffic signals. News feeds. Police drones. Every single display in Aurion Prime flickers and then shows the same image.

Two faces.

His face. Kiera's face.

His name: Dante Corsair

Her name: Kiera Vane

And underneath, in bold letters that seem to scream:

WANTED FOR TERRORISM AND THEFT OF IMPERIAL PROPERTY

REWARD FOR CAPTURE: ONE TRILLION CREDITS

DEAD OR ALIVE

Dante watches the color drain from Kiera's face. He can feel her emotions through the bond. Shock. Terror. Rage. Despair. All of it crashing through her at once like a tsunami.

"They're broadcasting it everywhere," she whispers.

"Not just everywhere," Dante says, watching as the broadcast spreads. He can see it in his mind even though they're locked in this warehouse. He can feel it happening across the city. Across the planet. Across multiple star systems through the imperial network. "Everyone."

Every bounty hunter in the galaxy just learned their names. Every mercenary. Every criminal with a weapon and a need for credits. They've gone from being myths and legends in the underworld to the most wanted people in existence.

The Imperial Museum heist just became the biggest news story in galactic history.

Kiera's hand is shaking. The Heartstone flares with light as her emotions spike. Dante can feel her wanting to run. Wanting to fight. Wanting to disappear into the shadows like she always has.

But the shadows don't hide legends. The shadows don't hide what the entire galaxy is looking for.

"We need to move," Dante says. "We need to get out of this warehouse and find somewhere safe. Somewhere they won't think to look."

"There is nowhere safe," Kiera says. "Not anymore."

Dante walks toward her. Slowly. Carefully. Like he's approaching something wild. He stops just close enough that the bond hums between them instead of burning. He reaches out and takes her hand. The one without the glowing Heartstone.

"Then we stop running," he says. "We face this together."

Kiera looks up at him. For a moment, her defenses crack. For a moment, she's not the Phantom. She's just Kiera. A woman who's been alone for so long that she doesn't know how to be part of anything.

"I don't know how to do this," she admits.

"Neither do I. But we're going to have to learn."

Outside, the broadcast continues. Their faces. Their names. One trillion credits for anyone brave or stupid enough to come after them.

The Galaxy's Most Wanted Couple has just been born.

And somewhere out there, Zara Vex is probably laughing.
