Loreen's POV
Loreen pushed the door to his father's office open and stepped inside.
He stopped.
Ardent was standing near the window. His father was behind the desk. And standing closer to the wall, in the kind of position a person takes when they are present but do not want to take up too much space, was a man Loreen did not immediately recognise.
But that was not what stopped him.
It was the chief constable. Standing in the center of the room in full uniform, hands clasped behind his back, with the particular stillness of a man waiting for an order.
Loreen had seen the officers in the hallway when he was walking in, lining the corridor in a way that said something significant was either happening or about to happen.
"Did I miss something," Loreen said. He looked between his father and Ardent. "Why are there officers in the hallway."
His father sighed. "Good. You are here." He gestured toward the chair across from his desk. "Sit down. Something has come to light."
