Sairis's POV
The carriage had not slowed down once in over an hour.
Sairis knew this because he had been counting. Not deliberately, not with any real system, but in the way that a person in pain measures time by the intervals between one bad moment and the next.
The road beneath them was uneven and the driver above them was either unaware of this or did not care, and the result was that the carriage hit every rock and every rut and every pothole in the ground at full speed and transferred all of it directly upward into the cabin.
He had stopped being able to feel his legs properly about twenty minutes ago.
His hips were a different matter. He could feel those very clearly and very specifically and the feeling was not good. Every bounce of the carriage sent a sharp line of pain through them that started at the joints and radiated outward and did not fully subside before the next one arrived.
