Chapter 1 - The First Case of My Life

It was a foggy winter morning. The old lanes of Kolkata had not fully awakened yet. Smoke was rising from the roadside tea stalls, and a few people were quietly sitting and drinking tea. At that moment, a small office door had a signboard that read:

**"Private Detective – Susmita Sen."**

Susmita Sen had just started her career as a detective. Since childhood, mysteries, puzzles, and crime stories had always fascinated her. After reading many books and studying different case studies, she finally opened her own small detective office. However, she had not yet received any major case.

That morning, there was a gentle knock on the door.

"Come in," Susmita said calmly.

A middle-aged man entered the room. Worry was clearly visible on his face.

"Are you Detective Susmita Sen?"

"Yes. Please tell me, what is the problem?"

The man introduced himself.

"My name is Arindam Mukherjee. I live in North Kolkata. Last night, a very valuable item disappeared from my house."

Susmita leaned slightly forward.

"What item?"

"A very old diamond necklace. It has been a valuable treasure of our family for generations."

A spark of interest appeared in Susmita's eyes. This could be the first big case of her life.

"Do you suspect anyone?"

Arindam hesitated for a moment and replied,

"Last night only three people were in the house — myself, my younger brother Amit, and our old servant Ramesh."

Susmita wrote everything carefully in her notebook.

"Alright. I will visit your house today."

---

## The Investigation Begins

In the afternoon, Susmita arrived at Arindam's old house. The house was large and built in a traditional style — wooden doors, a long veranda, and old framed photographs hanging on the walls.

First, she examined the room where the necklace had been kept.

It was inside a wooden cupboard.

The lock was not broken.

"That's strange," Susmita thought.

It meant that whoever took the necklace probably had access to the key.

---

## Interrogating Amit

Amit looked a little nervous.

"Where were you last night?" Susmita asked.

"I was in my room… reading a book."

"Did anyone see you there?"

Amit paused for a moment.

"No… I was alone."

Susmita quietly wrote it down.

---

## Interrogating Ramesh

Ramesh had been working in the house for almost twenty years.

"What were you doing last night?" Susmita asked.

"I was in the kitchen, madam. After dinner I went to sleep."

Ramesh looked frightened, but there was nothing unusual in his statement.

---

## A Mysterious Clue

While examining the room again, Susmita noticed something on the floor.

A small piece of paper.

She picked it up and looked closely.

It was part of a bill from a jewelry shop.

The name written on it was:

**"Royal Jewelers."**

Susmita thought to herself,

"If someone wants to sell the necklace, this might be the place."

---

## At the Jewelry Shop

In the evening, Susmita went to the jewelry shop.

She showed the shopkeeper the piece of bill and asked,

"Did anyone come here today or yesterday to sell an old diamond necklace?"

The shopkeeper thought for a moment.

"Yes… a gentleman came yesterday. But I found it suspicious and refused to buy it."

"Can you recognize him?"

"Yes, I can."

Susmita showed Amit's photograph on her phone.

The shopkeeper immediately said,

"Yes, this is the man."

---

## The Truth Revealed

That night Susmita returned to Arindam's house.

Everyone gathered in the living room.

Susmita calmly said,

"The person who stole the necklace is someone from inside this house."

Amit's face turned pale.

Susmita continued,

"Mr. Amit, yesterday you tried to sell the necklace at the jewelry shop. But the shopkeeper became suspicious and refused to buy it."

Amit remained silent.

Arindam looked shocked.

"Amit! Why would you do this?"

Amit lowered his head and spoke softly,

"I am deeply in debt, brother… I thought selling the necklace would solve my financial problems."

Silence filled the room.

---

## The End of the First Case

Later, the police recovered the necklace.

Arindam thanked Susmita warmly.

"You did an excellent job. You solved the mystery in such a short time."

Susmita smiled gently.

That night, sitting alone in her office, she wrote in her diary:

**"Today I solved my first case.

The first case of my life."**

Outside, a light rain was falling and the streets of Kolkata were shining under the streetlights.

Susmita knew one thing for sure.

This was only the beginning.

Many more mysteries, crimes, and secrets were waiting for her in the future.

And she would never forget the memory of her first case —

**"The First Case of My Life."**
