Chapter 99 - Chapter 99 – The First Lock

Chapter 99 – The First Lock

The words echoed through the Archive.

"My name was the First Lock."

Nobody moved.

Cr-Hook stood in the center of the broken room.

His eyes were still black.

The strange symbol over his chest pulsed slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Then again.

Kai stared at him.

"Cr-Hook…"

Cr-Hook looked at him.

But for a moment, Kai didn't recognize the expression on his face.

It wasn't anger.

It wasn't fear.

It wasn't even sadness.

It was recognition.

As if Cr-Hook was looking at someone he had known for thousands of years.

Kai took a cautious step forward.

"Are you still there?"

Cr-Hook blinked.

His eyes slowly returned to normal.

He looked at his hands.

"What…"

He touched his chest.

"What happened?"

Evetyl rushed toward him.

"Cr-Hook!"

She caught him before he fell.

He breathed heavily.

"I remember something."

"What?"

Cr-Hook looked at her.

"I wasn't always Cr-Hook."

"I know."

"No."

He shook his head.

"You don't understand."

He looked toward the shadow.

"I remember what I was guarding."

The shadow remained silent.

The Curator appeared at the entrance.

"Everyone get away from him."

Kai looked back.

"Why?"

The Curator's face was pale.

"Because I finally understand what the First Lock means."

Cr-Hook looked at him.

"Tell them."

The Curator swallowed.

"The First Lock wasn't a person."

Cr-Hook frowned.

"Then what was I?"

"A boundary."

The Curator raised his golden key.

"A living boundary between existence and whatever existed before it."

The First Thought suddenly spoke.

"That is impossible."

The Curator looked at it.

"You knew?"

"No."

"Then why did you say impossible?"

"Because the First Lock predates me."

The Eye appeared above them.

"I cannot observe its original form."

The Warden's chains tightened.

"And I cannot bind it."

Cr-Hook gave a nervous laugh.

"Great."

He looked at Kai.

"I finally discover my origin."

He pointed toward the Eye.

"And apparently I'm older than everyone."

Kai smiled slightly.

"That's very you."

Cr-Hook stared at him.

"What?"

"Making a terrible situation worse with a joke."

Cr-Hook smiled.

"I learned from you."

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then the shadow spoke.

"Enough."

The floor cracked.

The First Lock symbol over Cr-Hook's chest began glowing.

Cr-Hook immediately grabbed it.

"Something's wrong."

Evetyl looked at him.

"What?"

"I can hear something."

"What?"

Cr-Hook closed his eyes.

"A door."

Kai looked around.

"Where?"

"Inside me."

Cr-Hook suddenly fell to his knees.

Kai rushed toward him.

"Cr-Hook!"

Cr-Hook pushed him away.

"Don't touch me!"

Kai stopped.

Cr-Hook's breathing became heavier.

"I can hear it."

"What?"

"Knocking."

Everyone became silent.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

The sound came from Cr-Hook's chest.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

The Curator's face changed.

"No."

Evetyl looked at him.

"What?"

"That sound…"

He stepped backward.

"I've heard it before."

"Where?"

The Curator whispered:

"Behind the First Door."

Cr-Hook looked down.

The symbol on his chest opened slightly.

Not like a wound.

Like an eye.

Darkness appeared inside it.

Kai stared.

"What is that?"

Cr-Hook whispered:

"The thing I was keeping out."

The shadow smiled.

"Finally."

Cr-Hook looked up.

"You wanted this."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because the lock is useless without a key."

Evetyl suddenly understood.

"Kai."

Everyone looked at her.

"The key isn't the First Key."

The shadow smiled.

"No."

Evetyl looked at Kai.

"The key is him."

Kai's face went pale.

"Me?"

The shadow nodded.

"You were never created to open the First Door."

"You were created to open Cr-Hook."

Silence.

Cr-Hook looked at Kai.

"No."

Kai shook his head.

"I don't understand."

Cr-Hook stood.

"Neither do I."

The shadow raised its hand.

"Kai."

The silver symbol over Kai's heart appeared.

Cr-Hook's First Lock symbol responded.

Both began glowing.

Kai immediately stepped backward.

"No."

The symbols became brighter.

Evetyl grabbed Kai.

"Don't move."

"I can't stop it."

Cr-Hook clenched his fists.

"Neither can I."

The Archive began collapsing.

Doors disappeared.

Memories shattered.

The First Thought shouted:

"SEPARATE THEM!"

The Warden's chains shot forward.

They wrapped around Kai.

Other chains wrapped around Cr-Hook.

The Eye opened completely.

Reality bent around them.

But the two symbols continued responding to each other.

Cr-Hook shouted:

"It's not working!"

The Warden pulled harder.

"I know!"

The Curator slammed his golden key into the ground.

"Everyone get back!"

A golden barrier formed.

The Archive shook violently.

Then—

Silence.

The symbols disappeared.

Kai collapsed.

Cr-Hook collapsed.

Evetyl ran between them.

"Kai!"

She helped him up.

"Are you okay?"

Kai nodded weakly.

"I think so."

She turned.

"Cr-Hook?"

He wasn't moving.

"Cr-Hook!"

Evetyl ran toward him.

She turned him over.

His eyes were closed.

No response.

Kai crawled closer.

"Cr-Hook…"

Nothing.

Evetyl checked his breathing.

"He's alive."

Kai released a breath.

Then Cr-Hook suddenly opened his eyes.

He whispered:

"I saw it."

"What?"

"The other side."

Kai leaned closer.

"What was there?"

Cr-Hook looked terrified.

"I thought it was darkness."

"Wasn't it?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Cr-Hook slowly sat up.

"It was a city."

Kai froze.

"A city?"

"Yes."

"Like Crosshaven?"

Cr-Hook shook his head.

"Older."

"How old?"

Cr-Hook looked toward the First Door.

"Before the first world."

The Curator stepped closer.

"What did you see?"

Cr-Hook answered:

"A city filled with people."

The Curator frowned.

"That shouldn't exist."

Cr-Hook nodded.

"I know."

"Were they alive?"

"Yes."

"Who were they?"

Cr-Hook's expression became distant.

"I don't know."

"Then how do you know they were people?"

"Because…"

He swallowed.

"…they knew my name."

Everyone became silent.

"What name?"

Cr-Hook looked at Kai.

"My real one."

"What is it?"

Cr-Hook shook his head.

"I don't know."

"You just said they knew it."

"They did."

"Then what did they call you?"

Cr-Hook stared at the floor.

"I couldn't hear it."

"Why?"

"Because someone was screaming."

Evetyl stepped closer.

"Who?"

Cr-Hook looked at her.

"You."

Evetyl froze.

"Me?"

"You were standing in the middle of the city."

"What was I doing?"

"Running."

"From what?"

Cr-Hook closed his eyes.

"From yourself."

The Archive went completely silent.

Evetyl looked at the First Thought.

"Is that possible?"

The First Thought didn't answer.

The Eye looked toward the First Door.

"I have detected a contradiction."

"What contradiction?"

"The memory of the city predates the first world."

The Curator frowned.

"That means…"

"It existed before existence."

Kai looked at him.

"How can a city exist before existence?"

The Curator slowly shook his head.

"It shouldn't."

Cr-Hook stood.

"But it did."

He looked toward the First Door.

"And I think I know where it is."

Everyone looked at him.

"Where?"

Cr-Hook pointed at the floor.

"Under Crosshaven."

Kai frowned.

"Under Crosshaven?"

"Yes."

"The real Crosshaven?"

Cr-Hook nodded.

"There is another city beneath it."

The Curator immediately opened his golden book.

He turned page after page.

Nothing.

Then—

One page appeared.

A map.

Crosshaven was drawn on it.

But beneath Crosshaven was another city.

The Curator's hands began shaking.

"No…"

Evetyl looked at the map.

"What?"

The Curator whispered:

"This city has been here the entire time."

Kai stared.

"Why didn't anyone know?"

The Curator looked at Cr-Hook.

"Because it wasn't hidden."

"It was erased."

A deep vibration traveled through the Archive.

The First Door slowly began opening.

The shadow stepped backward.

Cr-Hook looked at it.

"You're afraid."

The shadow didn't answer.

Cr-Hook smiled.

"You are."

The shadow finally spoke.

"I am not afraid of you."

Cr-Hook raised his weapon.

"Then what are you afraid of?"

The shadow looked beyond him.

At Kai.

Then at Evetyl.

Then at the opening First Door.

"The city."

The First Door opened wider.

A distant light appeared.

Then sounds.

Footsteps.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Millions.

Someone was walking toward them.

Kai stepped closer to Evetyl.

"Who is coming?"

Cr-Hook whispered:

"The people I saw."

The Curator raised his key.

"Prepare yourselves."

The Warden's chains moved.

The Eye watched.

The First Thought remained completely still.

Then a figure appeared through the First Door.

A woman.

She looked ordinary.

No armor.

No weapon.

No aura.

She simply walked forward.

She stopped.

Looked at Cr-Hook.

And smiled.

"Finally."

Cr-Hook stared at her.

"Who are you?"

The woman answered:

"The first person you ever protected."

Cr-Hook froze.

She looked toward Kai.

"The first person you ever failed."

Then she looked toward Evetyl.

"And the first person who betrayed us all."

Evetyl's eyes widened.

The woman smiled.

"Hello, Aeterna."

Evetyl couldn't move.

The woman raised one hand.

Behind her...

the ancient city appeared.

Its lights filled the darkness.

Millions of people stood within it.

Waiting.

The woman spoke again.

"Welcome home."

Cr-Hook raised his weapon.

Kai stepped beside Evetyl.

And the First Door opened completely.

For the first time...

the people of the forgotten city stepped into the Archive.
