There was a knock on the door in the middle of the night. We opened it to find Roxy in her nightgown.
"Listen, I was thinking about it, and I think it's time. For Rudy at least."
Rudy gave her a coy smile.
"What is this? Are you suddenly in love with me Master?"
"Stupid brat. I'm trying to say it's time to learn the hardest spell yet."
Rudy looked at me with a raised eyebrow then back at Roxy.
"The hardest one yet you say? Is that a joke?"
"Not at all. It took me years to learn this one, but I think you're probably ready for it, however… since it's such a powerful spell, we're going to have to take this demonstration outside of town."
Rudy suddenly looked alarmed.
"Outside of town?"
"Yeah."
"As in past the yard?"
"As in way past the yard, further than you've ever been before."
"Master… I don't think I'm ready for that."
"I disagree. I think getting past the yard is an important lesson in itself. If you can't manage to do that much, this will be it. This is all you'll be able to learn, and I know you're not ready to call it quits here."
"You're just exaggerating, surely there's no need to–"
"I'm serious Rudy. Either we do this or everything you've done up until now ends here."
At this point I expected Rudy to continue putting the argument up like he had in the past, but strangely enough he was silent. I could for sure tell that he was formulating his response just by how his face was contorting, but the words never came, and slowly the hard tension softened, if even by a little bit. Rudy then looked at her with a timid expression.
"Maybe you're right, Master. Maybe I do need to do this… but just know, that if I'm going to do this, I need to be right with me when I do. Something might happen, and I don't want to be alone if it does."
"Nothing's going to happen Rudy… but if it does I'll protect you in whatever way I can."
"Okay. I guess it can't be helped then."
With that we all headed off into bed, and then in the morning helped Roxy bring out Caravaggio so that she and Rudy could take a trip outside of town. Rudy was worried the entire time, and even after leaving past the gate his body never relaxed. He was more scared than I'd ever seen him before, and even then he stayed faithfully silent. As I watched them disappear into the horizon, a long wait began.
I knew exactly was about to come, and though it meant the end of Rudy's tutoring, it didn't necessarily mean that I was finished with my lessons. I was far enough behind Rudy that Roxy was probably going to stay longer than in the original story. I don't know how that would change things, so it was just about the only thing I could think about while I was waiting. I was so distracted that I didn't even notice Aneste come inside and up behind me until she was in my face.
"Hello! I've been standing here awhile Leah!"
"How long?"
"About ten minutes stupid!"
"I must be tired." I said in an exhale.
"Is that why you got left behind?"
"Left behind?"
"So you didn't even notice that your Master and Rudy had left?"
"You know not to call her that. She hates it!"
"I think it suits her whether she wants it to or not. You still didn't answer my question though."
"I didn't get left behind. I stayed behind. That way Rudy can focus."
"Focus on what?"
"His final exam."
Aneste's eyes widened.
"His final exam?! Really?!" she asked with energy.
"Really!"
"Wait, that means he'll graduate before you… are you?... are you going to be okay with that?"
"Yeah. I think a couple of weeks ago it upset me, but I think I can accept it now. Rudy's worked hard, and he deserves to move on and I couldn't be more proud of him!"
"How much longer do you think it will be before you catch up?"
"A year, maybe two."
"I know I've got way longer than that to catch up, but maybe one day, we'll both be on the same level!"
Aneste stayed for about an hour before leaving to go home. Apparently she had some extra chores she had to do, something I oddly enough didn't have much of. Lilia did just about everything I could have and while it helped momma out a lot, I'm not sure it was doing a lot for me and Rudy. Oh well. I guess that's just how it is.
At that moment I heard a loud crack of thunder and then looked outside to see dark clouds in the distance. It really was such a magnificent spell, one that someday I'd have to learn how to use. Any mage who know that spell has to be valuable… maybe that's why Roxy was so cocky in the beginning. She knew she had something powerful already mastered and knew what her worth was.
A few minutes later I was called into the dining room to eat lunch with momma and Lilia. Papa was out hunting monsters which meant it was just the three of us. Momma kept taking glances at me whereas Lilia kept her eyes controlled at all times. Lilia's gaze control really was quite impressive. Even if I wanted to, I don't think I could ever reach her level even with this new start. Momma then let out a sigh.
"You two have grown so much it surprises me that you're both still so young."
I shrugged.
"It doesn't feel like it."
"But it's true. You and Rudy are both nothing like you were two years ago. You were such a mild and curious child, but now you're headstrong and fighting hard to keep up with your brother. As for you brother, he was so all over the place doing this and that, causing trouble here and there, but now he's become so studious and helpful that it's actually quite shocking just thinking about it."
"He still makes trouble for me though!"
"I know. One day he'll stop making trouble for you, and you're going to miss these days. I know I will. I really thought I was ready to be a mother, and I really thought I was ready for all the challenges it would bring, but you two have taught me that I was ready for nothing. The raising part was supposed to be the hardest. The fights, the petty arguments, all of that, but it turned out to be the– well, it's actually a little hard to put words to exactly what's been hard."
Momma continued giving me glances and smiling. It wasn't until this moment that I realized just how much momma cared about us. To her we really were her precious children and brought her a kind of joy that people would kill just to have for a moment. It made feel guilty. I knew for certain that the amount of affection I held for Zenith didn't match the amount of affection she held for me. Momma then shrugged and let out a laugh.
"I think it's the complex emotions. It's a feeling that there's only so many petty fights you and Rudy will have. It's that you're quickly starting to put up a good defense against your papa. It's that you've outgrown a lot of your clothes already and will need new ones in a few months, in a few more after that, and so on until you've stopped growing altogether."
"Until we've stopped growing?"
"Yes, Leah. My babies are going to be grown one day, and it really makes me sad to think about, but it also makes me proud in a way. Okay. That's enough of that. I'm going to get sad for real if we keep talking about this. When do you think Rudy and Roxy will be back?"
"By evening probably if not sooner."
"That's good. I bet you Rudy will pass and then after that we'll just have to wait for you. I prefer it that way. I'm not really ready for Roxy to leave just yet, so I'm glad we'll have a good excuse!"
"Me too."
It really did feel like a moment of relief, but when Roxy and Rudy finally got home and we heard about Rudy passing his test effortlessly, the truth came forward. Roxy put her hands on Rudy's shoulders and looked him stern in the face."
"This is it. You've reached graduation, and with this, I've taught you everything I know."
"So that's it? I'm all done?"
"Precisely. I'm sad to say… that means I'll have to leave."
"Leave?!"
Everyone froze with shock. Roxy let out a sigh and then tipped her hat forward.
"I'll stay one more day, but after tomorrow, I'm afraid it's farewell."
"But wait! I haven't learned everything Rudy has yet." I interjected.
"That's okay. You'll catch up, even without my help."
"But I do! I do need your help!"
Roxy walked over to me and started stroking my head. I looked over to see momma put her hand over her mouth and tears start forming in her eyes. I looked over at Rudy and he looked confused, but unwilling to put forth a protest. I then had to look Roxy in the eyes.
"I thought about it for a good while, Leah. At first I was planning on staying for your sake, but then I thought about it more and realized that it was just an excuse I was making. You were able to teach Aneste magic together, something I'm not sure I could have. You'll both surpass me, but I'll catch up. I'll get stronger. I now know I have room to get stronger. You've both taught me a valuable lesson, that no matter how smart you get, and no matter how strong you are, there's always room for more."
"There's room for you… you don't have to leave."
"I know I don't have to leave. You're a smart girl. And because you're smart, you should already know that I'm making this choice because I want to, not because I have to. In some ways it's pretty selfish, but I think you'll see I was right one day."
"This… this isn't fair." I said, tears starting to fall from my eyes.
"Don't be like that. You did good. You both did very good. I'm proud and I'm enlightened."
"Enlightened? What does that mean even?!"
"I always thought I was happier alone. I never once wanted a family or bonds of my own. Those were some pretty immature notions. Getting to know you two has changed me a lot and built up a debt I'm not ever going to afford to pay back. Maybe we'll meet again one day, but when that day comes, I want you both to be proud of the person I've become."
Momma stepped forward, her tears finally stopping as her face filled with a sensible understanding I couldn't match even a little.
"You really won't stay, Roxy?" She asked. I secretly hoped that momma's request would change her mind. Roxy nodded.
"I'm sure. There's a lot more for me to learn, and if I stay here it won't be long before I start feeling like I'm slipping away. I have to keep moving and get to places I haven't been and learn things I've put off for years. I ready to move on from being above average to being a truly exceptional mage."
"Thank you for all your hard work Roxy, and If there's anything you need, be sure to call."
Roxy smiled and then turned back to me.
"Are you going to be okay, Leah?"
I looked at her pleadingly when Rudy suddenly charged into my side nearly knocking me over.
"Are you kidding? As long as she has me she'll be fine!" He exclaimed.
"HEY! THAT HURT!"
"Oh would you look at that? She's getting weaker already."
"I am not! I just don't like being rammed by your stupid head!"
"If this head which got me a graduation is stupid, I can only imagine how much worse yours is!"
"THAT DOES IT!"
I rammed him and he fell to the ground. Nobody tried to stop us and it wasn't until papa got home that our fight got broken up. Papa didn't understand what was going on at all, and all he could get out of Lilia, Roxy and Zenith was laughter.
