AT THE SAME TIME

I saw Adam not being happy to see Michael nearby, and I could tell that something would happen. I do want Adam safe, but I also do not want to see my not real brother to get hurt.
"Stay there." Adam said.
Michael froze.
"I am not here to take him." He said.
"You couldn't." Adam replied.
"Fair."He said.
Silence again. Then Michael laughed, short, broken.
"I thought I had everything figured out." He said. "I thought I was the important one."
"You were treated like it." I said.
"Yeah." He nodded.
"And I believed it." Another pause.
"Were we ever… real?" He asked suddenly.
The question hit harder than anything else.
"What?" I said.
"Us." He clarified. "Brothers."
Silence, heavy, complicated.
"I don't know." I said honestly.
That hurt him more than a lie would have.
"Yeah." He whispered.
"I figured."I nodded. "I remember trying." I added quietly.
"I remember wanting you to look at me like I mattered."He looked up.
His expression broke.
