Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 Overload (Ver2.0)

The city did not hesitate.

The moment Kain gave the command—

It answered.

Not with sound.

But with light.

Blue energy surged through the dead conduits beneath his feet, igniting them in violent succession. What had been dark lines etched into the industrial floor burst into life, radiating outward in branching paths that spread across the entire sector like a neural network suddenly firing after centuries of silence.

For an instant—

Everything was illuminated.

Every broken assembly line.

Every towering skeletal machine.

Every shadow.

And every Ruin Beast.

Kain saw them clearly now.

Not just movement in the dark.

Not just shapes.

Eight of them.

Each one a twisted fusion of machine and flesh—metal frames warped beyond symmetry, reinforced with black organic growth that pulsed faintly under the sudden light. Exposed cables hung like torn veins. Their red optics burned brighter, reacting instantly to the surge of energy flooding the environment.

They stopped.

All of them.

Just for a fraction of a second.

Kain's breathing slowed.

"They can feel it."

"Yes," Lia replied instantly."Energy spike detected. Neural disruption observed."

Kain's eyes narrowed.

"Good."

"Then we hit first."

The pause ended.

The nearest Ruin Beast moved.

It didn't hesitate this time.

It launched.

Fast.

Too fast for something that broken.

Kain didn't step back.

"Now."

The ground beneath the creature detonated.

CRACK—

A pillar of electricity surged upward from the conduit, erupting in a concentrated blast of energy that caught the Ruin Beast mid-air.

Its body snapped rigid.

Limbs locked.

The organic mass convulsed violently, reacting to the overload as if it were alive in the worst possible way.

Metal glowed.

Optics flickered.

Then—

It dropped.

Hard.

Dead before it hit the ground.

Kain exhaled slowly.

"…Seven."

The turret rose beside him with a sharp mechanical snap.

Locked.

Fired.

BOOM—

The second Ruin Beast disintegrated in a violent burst of force, fragments scattering across the glowing conduits in a spray of metal and dark tissue.

The rest moved immediately.

Not blindly.

Not in panic.

They adapted.

Two spread wide, circling into the shadows beyond the brightest energy lines.

One climbed the side of a broken assembly tower, using its limbs with unnatural coordination.

Another lowered its posture and advanced slowly, testing the ground before each step.

Kain watched them.

Studied them.

"They're not reacting randomly."

"No," Lia confirmed."Behavior pattern indicates adaptive response."

Kain gave a short, humorless laugh.

"Of course they are."

"Why wouldn't they be?"

A shadow dropped from above.

Kain moved instantly.

He twisted sideways as a Ruin Beast slammed into the ground where he had been standing, the impact sending a shock through the metal floor.

Before it could recover—

Kain moved forward.

Not away.

Forward.

His shoulder drove into its side, disrupting its balance.

The turret fired.

BOOM—

The creature exploded at point-blank range.

Fragments rained down.

Kain staggered back, breathing sharper now.

"…Five."

"Correction," Lia said.

"Four."

Kain's head snapped to the side.

Movement.

Fast.

A Ruin Beast darted along the outer edge of the lit zone, staying just beyond the brightest conduits.

It wasn't charging.

It was circling.

Watching.

"Flanker," Kain muttered.

"Yes."

Another moved behind him.

Silent.

Low.

Too coordinated.

"They're herding," Kain said.

"Confirmed."

Kain's eyes sharpened.

"Good."

"Then we break the pattern."

He stepped backward deliberately, drawing two of the creatures closer.

The ground beneath him flickered as energy shifted through the conduits.

Not randomly.

Not evenly.

Focused.

"Lia."

"Yes."

"Redirect power."

"Single vector."

"Maximum output."

A pause—

Then the system responded.

The conduits around him dimmed.

Except one.

A single line ahead flared brighter than all the others, its glow intensifying to the point of distortion.

The Ruin Beasts reacted instantly.

They slowed.

Hesitated.

Avoiding it.

Kain smiled slightly.

"Exactly."

"You understand danger."

He stepped forward.

Closing the distance.

The nearest creature lunged.

Kain didn't dodge.

He stepped into it.

His shoulder slammed into its torso, redirecting its momentum just enough—

Just enough—

To force its landing directly onto the overloaded conduit.

"Now."

The city unleashed it.

CRACK—

The energy discharge was violent.

Not a surge.

A detonation.

The Ruin Beast convulsed as power flooded through every part of its structure. The organic mass blackened instantly. Metal warped under the stress. Its optics flickered—

Then shattered.

It collapsed in a smoking heap.

Kain stepped back.

"…Three."

"Two," Lia corrected.

"And one elevated."

Kain looked up.

Too late.

The final Ruin Beast dropped from above.

It hit him hard.

Pain exploded through his side as he was driven backward across the metal floor.

Air left his lungs.

The creature pressed down, claws digging into the ground on either side of his body.

Too close.

Way too close.

Its jaws opened.

Kain reacted on instinct.

His hand closed around a jagged metal rod.

He jammed it upward.

The rod wedged between its jaws just as they snapped shut.

A sharp crack echoed.

The creature thrashed violently, trying to crush through the obstruction.

Kain's arms shook under the pressure.

Its optics burned inches from his face.

Hot.

Unstable.

Alive.

"Lia!"

"Yes."

"Turret—!"

"Ready."

The creature shifted—

Just slightly.

Enough.

Kain twisted his body sideways, kicking off the ground and rolling free.

The turret fired.

BOOM—

The Ruin Beast disintegrated mid-motion.

Fragments scattered across the glowing floor.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Complete.

Kain lay there for a moment.

Breathing hard.

Listening.

Nothing.

No movement.

No sound.

"…Last one," he said quietly.

"No," Lia replied.

Kain froze.

"What?"

A shape moved at the edge of the light.

The first Ruin Beast.

The one that had appeared earliest.

It hadn't joined the attack.

It hadn't moved.

Until now.

It stepped forward.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Its optics flickered—not wildly like the others, but steadily.

Watching.

Analyzing.

Kain pushed himself up.

"…That one's different."

"Yes."

"Behavior deviation confirmed."

The creature tilted its head.

Then—

It stepped back.

Into the darkness.

And disappeared.

Kain didn't follow.

Didn't move.

After several seconds, he exhaled slowly.

"…It retreated."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Unknown."

Kain looked toward the darkness where it vanished.

"…No."

He shook his head slightly.

"Not unknown."

"They were testing."

A pause.

Then—

"High probability."

Kain let out a breath.

"Good."

He turned toward the deeper industrial sector.

"…Then we just passed the first test."

The conduits dimmed.

Returning to baseline.

The turret lowered back into the ground.

The city quieted again.

But it didn't feel the same.

Not empty.

Not dormant.

Aware.

Responsive.

Kain rolled his shoulder, ignoring the pain.

Then straightened.

"This place isn't abandoned."

"It's contested."

"Yes."

Kain nodded once.

A faint smile appeared.

"Then we take control."

Above them—

Engines roared across the Dead Zone.

Closer now.

Much closer.

The system flashed.

Surface Intruders — Arrival in 3 Minutes

Kain looked up.

Then back toward the industrial core.

Then forward into the darkness.

This time—

There was no hesitation.

"Next phase," he said.

And stepped deeper into the city.
