Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 Replacement Criteria

The system did not begin with movement.

It began with pressure.

The moment Kain stepped into the next chamber, the air itself seemed to compress—not physically, but cognitively, as if something had reached into the space around him and redefined its limits.

The walls did not shift.

The lights did not flicker.

Nothing visibly changed.

And yet—

Everything was different.

"…This is it," Lia said.

Her voice was lower than before.

Strained.

"Authority Compatibility Test — active."

Kain didn't respond.

He was already feeling it.

His body was still.

But his perception—

Wasn't his anymore.

The chamber extended infinitely in every direction, the defined walls dissolving into a smooth, endless plane of reflective surface that stretched beyond visible range. The floor beneath his feet lost texture, becoming a perfect mirror, reflecting not just his form—but delayed versions of it.

Different positions.

Different timings.

Different choices.

"…That's new," Kain said quietly.

"Yes."

"Cognitive environment override."

The girl's grip tightened sharply.

"…don't trust what you see."

Kain's eyes narrowed.

"…I wasn't planning to."

The system pulsed.

Not as text.

Not as interface.

As a presence.

Authority Compatibility Evaluation — Initiated

Then—

It hit.

Kain staggered.

Just slightly.

But enough.

For the first time since entering the city—

He lost control.

His arm moved—

Without his command.

A step forward—

Not chosen.

His vision flickered—

Overlayed with alternate routes, decisions, outcomes.

"…Lia."

"Yes."

"…status."

"…control interference at 34%."

Kain's jaw tightened.

"…It's taking movement authority."

"Yes."

The pressure increased.

The system wasn't testing what he chose.

It was testing if he could choose at all.

His body tried to move again—

Left this time.

Toward an invisible point.

Toward a path that didn't exist before.

Kain stopped it.

Barely.

Muscles locking.

Control straining.

"…So that's the test," he muttered.

"Not which path…"

"…but who decides."

The girl's voice cut through.

Sharper than before.

"…it's not testing if you can control it…"

Kain forced his body still.

"…then what?"

Her eyes locked onto his.

Clear.

Focused.

Terrifyingly certain.

"…it's testing if it can replace you."

Silence.

Absolute.

Kain didn't blink.

Didn't react.

Didn't hesitate.

"…Good," he said.

The system surged.

Violently.

Override Escalation — Initiated

The world fractured.

Multiple versions of Kain appeared across the reflective plane, each one moving differently—walking forward, turning, kneeling, reaching, accepting.

Every possible response.

Every possible submission.

And every one of them—

Wrong.

His body moved again.

This time stronger.

Forced.

Pushed toward one of those reflections.

Toward a version of himself that did not resist.

Kain stopped.

Hard.

Every muscle in his body locked into place.

His breathing slowed.

Controlled.

Deliberate.

"…You're not testing strength," he said quietly.

"…you're testing alignment."

The pressure shifted.

Adaptive Response Detected

The reflections changed.

Now they showed outcomes.

Success.

Failure.

Acceptance.

Rejection.

Paths that ended in control.

Paths that ended in termination.

Kain watched.

Not reacting.

Not choosing.

"…You want me to become one of these."

The system pulsed.

"…But that's not how this works."

His hand moved.

Not forced.

Chosen.

He stepped—

Backward.

Everything froze.

The reflections collapsed.

Instantly.

All of them.

The system reacted.

Not violently.

Not chaotically.

Sharply.

Deviation Confirmed

The pressure intensified.

Trying again.

Harder.

More direct.

Kain smiled.

Faint.

Cold.

"…You don't get it, do you?"

He took another step.

Not toward any reflection.

Not toward any outcome.

Away.

"…I'm not here to fit your system."

The environment distorted.

The infinite plane fractured.

Cracks forming across the mirrored surface.

The system's control tightening.

Trying to force resolution.

"…I'm here to take control of it."

The pressure spiked.

Maximum.

For one moment—

Kain almost lost it.

His body trembled.

His vision blurred.

The system tried to overwrite.

To align.

To replace.

The girl's voice cut through—

Clear.

Sharp.

"…hold."

Not guidance.

Not instruction.

Anchor.

Kain steadied.

Focused.

Locked.

"…Lia."

"Yes."

"…link me."

"Define."

"…All nodes."

A pause.

Then—

"…executing."

The signal fired.

Downward.

Upward.

Through every node Kain had taken.

Every anchor.

Every piece of territory he had claimed.

The system collided with it.

Authority Conflict — Maximum

The chamber shook.

Not physically.

Conceptually.

The infinite plane shattered.

Completely.

Reality snapped back.

The chamber returned.

The walls.

The structure.

The column.

Kain stood still.

Breathing steady.

Unbroken.

Silence.

Then—

The system spoke.

Authority Compatibility — ACCEPTED

Local Authority Increased: 7%

The pressure vanished.

Instantly.

Kain exhaled slowly.

"…There it is."

The girl leaned slightly against him.

"…you didn't let it rewrite you…"

Kain smirked faintly.

"…No."

"…I rewrote the test."

Lia's voice returned.

Clearer than ever.

"…system responsiveness restored."

Kain nodded.

"…Good."

Then—

The system pulsed again.

Different.

Heavier.

Deeper.

The column in front of them shifted.

Segments unlocking.

Layers separating.

Something—

Opening.

A new interface emerged.

Larger.

More complex.

More fundamental.

Core Access Tier — Unlocked

Kain's eyes narrowed.

"…Now we're getting somewhere."

The girl whispered:

"…this is where it starts…"

Kain smiled.

Slow.

Sharp.

"…No."

He stepped forward.

"…this is where it gets interesting."
