Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 — Lines That Shouldn’t Be Crossed

Alexander Kazafi did not like variables he couldn't control.

Medicine, at its core, was built on uncertainty—unexpected reactions, hidden complications, outcomes that could shift in seconds—but even within that unpredictability, there were systems. Protocols. Structures that allowed him to navigate chaos with precision.

That was what made him good at what he did.

That was what made him reliable.

And that was exactly why Vladimir Volkov was becoming a problem.

It had been less than twenty-four hours since the incident in Room 318.

Less than a day since Vladimir had stepped in—uninvited, unqualified, and yet undeniably effective.

Alexander had replayed the moment more times than he cared to admit.

Not because he doubted his own handling of the situation.

But because Vladimir had been right.

The patient had been escalating. His breathing had been unstable. His panic had been seconds away from spiraling out of control again.

Alexander would have stabilized him.

He knew he would have.

But Vladimir had done it first.

And faster.

That was the part Alexander couldn't ignore.

"Doctor Kazafi?"

Alexander looked up from the file in his hands. A junior resident stood by the door, hesitating slightly.

"Yes?"

"There's… someone asking for you."

Alexander frowned faintly. "A patient?"

"…No," the resident replied. "He's not listed."

That was unusual.

Visitors were registered. Logged. Controlled.

"Where is he?" Alexander asked.

"In the main lobby."

Alexander closed the file slowly.

"…I'll be there."

The lobby was quieter than usual, the afternoon lull settling in. A few patients sat scattered across the waiting area, some speaking quietly, others lost in their own thoughts.

And then—

There he was.

The man stood near the far end of the room, posture relaxed but deliberate. He wasn't as physically imposing as Vladimir, but there was something in the way he carried himself—sharp, calculated, controlled.

Dangerous, in a different way.

He noticed Alexander immediately.

Of course he did.

"…Doctor Kazafi," the man said, his voice smooth, almost polite.

Alexander stopped a few feet away. "You asked for me."

A faint smile.

"I did."

"…Why?"

The man tilted his head slightly, studying him with open curiosity.

"So you're the one."

Alexander's expression didn't change. "I don't have time for vague statements."

"Direct. Efficient. I see the appeal."

That—

Was not something a stranger should be saying.

"State your purpose," Alexander said, his tone sharpening.

The man chuckled softly.

"You don't recognize me," he said. "Interesting."

"Should I?"

A pause.

Then—

"…No," the man admitted. "But you've met someone who does."

Alexander's gaze hardened.

"…Be clear."

The man stepped closer—not invading space, but testing it.

"Vladimir Volkov," he said quietly.

The name landed.

Alexander didn't react outwardly.

But internally—

Everything stilled.

"…What about him?"

The man's smile widened slightly.

"I'm here because of him."

That was enough.

Alexander turned.

"Then you should speak to him, not me."

"Ah," the man said softly, "but that's where you're wrong."

Alexander stopped.

"…He's difficult to approach directly," the man continued. "But you—"

A pause.

Then—

"…you're accessible."

Alexander turned back slowly, his gaze colder now.

"I'm not involved in whatever this is."

"No?" the man asked, genuinely curious. "That's not what it looks like."

"There is no 'what it looks like.' He's a patient."

The man watched him carefully.

Then—

"…If you say so."

That tone again.

That subtle implication.

Alexander's patience thinned.

"You're wasting my time."

"Not yet," the man replied. "But I might, if you keep pretending."

Silence.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then—

A new presence entered the space.

Heavy.

Familiar.

Unavoidable.

"…You shouldn't be here."

Vladimir's voice.

Both men turned.

He stood a short distance away, his expression calm—but his eyes?

Cold.

Focused.

The air shifted instantly.

The man in front of Alexander smiled.

"…There you are."

Vladimir didn't return the expression.

Instead, he walked forward, his attention fixed entirely on him.

"Leave," he said.

Simple.

Direct.

Final.

The man sighed lightly. "Straight to the point. I missed that."

"I didn't."

A pause.

Then—

"…You're still as unpleasant as ever," the man added casually.

"And you're still breathing," Vladimir replied.

That—

Was not casual.

Alexander's gaze flicked between them.

There was history here.

Clear.

Unresolved.

"…You shouldn't threaten me in public," the man said, though there was no real fear in his tone.

"Then don't come here," Vladimir replied.

Another pause.

Then—

The man glanced at Alexander.

"…You've chosen an interesting environment," he said.

"I didn't choose anything," Vladimir said sharply.

The man raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

Silence.

For the first time—

There was tension in Vladimir's posture.

Subtle.

But there.

"…This doesn't concern him," Vladimir said, his voice lowering.

The man smiled faintly.

"…It already does."

That was enough.

Vladimir stepped forward—

And this time—

There was no mistaking it.

It wasn't just presence.

It was intent.

"Leave," he repeated.

The man studied him for a moment longer.

Then—

Slowly—

He stepped back.

"…We'll continue this later," he said.

"No," Vladimir replied. "We won't."

A faint laugh.

"…We'll see."

And just like that—

He turned and walked away.

The lobby returned to its usual quiet.

But the tension—

Remained.

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"…Who was that?"

Vladimir didn't answer immediately.

Instead, his gaze shifted—

To Alexander.

"You shouldn't have spoken to him."

Alexander frowned slightly. "He approached me."

"You should have walked away."

"I don't walk away from unknown variables," Alexander replied calmly.

A pause.

Then—

"…You should," Vladimir said.

Alexander's eyes narrowed slightly.

"That's not how I work."

"No," Vladimir said quietly. "It's not."

Silence settled between them.

Then—

"…He's not your concern," Vladimir added.

Alexander's expression hardened.

"He made it my concern."

"That wasn't his decision."

"And it's not yours either."

That—

Landed.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then—

Vladimir stepped closer.

Not aggressive.

But deliberate.

"You don't understand what you're stepping into," he said.

Alexander didn't move.

"Then explain it."

"I won't."

"Then don't expect me to ignore it."

A pause.

Vladimir studied him.

Carefully.

"…You don't back down," he said.

"No."

"…Even when you should."

"Especially then."

That—

Changed something.

Not visibly.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Vladimir exhaled quietly, running a hand through his hair.

"…You're making this harder than it needs to be."

Alexander's gaze didn't waver.

"Then stop complicating it."

A faint, humorless smile.

"…You think I'm the one doing that?"

"Yes."

Another pause.

Then—

"…Fine," Vladimir said.

The word wasn't agreement.

It was acceptance.

But of what—

Alexander wasn't sure.

"Stay out of it," Vladimir added.

Alexander shook his head slightly.

"No."

Silence.

Then—

For the first time—

Vladimir looked almost… frustrated.

"…You don't listen."

"No," Alexander replied calmly. "I observe. And right now, what I see is a situation that has entered my workplace, approached me directly, and refused to explain itself."

A beat.

Then—

"…That's not something I ignore."

Vladimir held his gaze for a long moment.

Then—

"…You're not as detached as you pretend to be," he said.

Alexander didn't respond.

Because this time—

That wasn't entirely wrong.

"…I'll handle it," Vladimir added.

Alexander's voice remained steady.

"No. You'll explain it."

A pause.

Then—

"…Not here."

That was the closest thing to agreement Alexander was going to get.

"…Fine," he said.

And just like that—

Another line was crossed.

Not physical.

Not obvious.

But real.

Because now—

This wasn't just a patient-doctor dynamic.

It was something else.

Something neither of them had fully defined.

And something that was no longer contained within the hospital walls.

As Vladimir turned to leave, he paused briefly.

"…Be careful," he said.

Then he walked away.

Alexander stood there for a moment longer, watching him go.

Then—

Slowly—

He exhaled.

"…Too late for that," he murmured.

Because whether he liked it or not—

He was already involved.
