Chapter 41 - Old History

Soon after that, Jack and Victor departed from the Salvation's Camp, but not after Jack asked about the sedative that had the painkilling effect.

The bishopess Reinette pointed him to another tent where the red-haired Priestess Mercy was as well as Fio, who were placed in charge of the matter.

He received the glass tube with it and had to drink it on the spot. Naturally, Mercy took the opportunity to preach about the Goddess; it was one of the reasons why the Salvation's Church rose so quickly in the area.

The people that received help obeyed the unconscious social law of reciprocity, and they felt that they had to listen and eventually convert due to repeated received assistance and the fact that they learned the scripture more than their original belief reinforced this even more, due to them believing they put effort in this conversion while all they did was repeatedly listen for a few minutes.

Jack was well used to such tactics which the Church of Salvation used. The Earth nation he came from, despite him not remembering its name, had the highest amount of new religious movements, and as such, he was used to ignoring cults and the like.

Of course, he still stood there and listened; the information was precious, and he had Victor right beside him to ask if he had any questions.

As for the preaching, he learned that Salvation first appeared in the Nordic nations above the Mehatot River Line four hundred years ago, with her first action being that she blessed seven people with the powers to save the Nordic nations from an outbreak of a failed summoning ritual that attempted to summon the god of the fallen empire from seven hundred years ago.

Their genders and names were lost to history, but apparently she bestowed them with seven summonable weapons, with the only one being known publicly being the Sword of the Swordmaster.

As for the information about the heroes, she learned two of the blessings: Berserk, which made one of the heroes increase in strength at the cost of one's sanity—the symptoms of such were much like schizophrenia combined with increased urges.

The other was Swordmaster, which included instinctual mastery over swords and improved body functions. For example, the blessed Swordmaster was a cripple that was lucky to be born in a well-off family, thus he had considerable weight gained due to lack of movement.

The problem was fixed, and in less than a month, the Swordmaster already lost all weight and built a very strong body. Victor confirmed this story as well.

But what made Jack truly confused was the fact that they disappeared as soon as the disaster was solved, and despite their blessings, no descendant with their traits was found.

Now back to Jack and Victor, they boarded a private decorated carriage that was owned by Victor. What Jack didn't know at first was the fact that Victor was constantly being escorted secretly.

At first, he thought it was a coincidence, but after the repeated appearance of specific people nearby Victor, he was sure that this was the case.

When asked, Victor confirmed that they are his escorts, provided by the Count of Lut.

Jack was put at ease and put this matter at the back of his mind, but he was still curious about the seven heroes, so he asked Victor for more information.

He responded and explained some things over the trip in the carriage. "Well first, the Church of Salvation obeys Salvation, but she doesn't get involved in their matters too much."

Jack was surprised at this information. "Why is that?" Victor answered, "Well, there are many reasons, but they all boil down to how deities are not allowed to intervene in the world."

"..." Jack stood there waiting for Victor to continue. "This is information not available to the public and is stored in my family's personal archives, which hold seven hundred years of information."

Victor inhaled through his mouth. "While I certainly can give you the full detail, I will not. It will bring you more trouble knowing about it than not."

"But I will say this: The god of the Ancient fallen empire was known as the Creator, and he is still worshiped by the elves in the northern great forest, and to them, Salvation is known as the Angel of Salvation."

The carriage stopped in front of a three-floor mansion with a balcony above the entrance. It was built in a French design with very large windows; each side from the balcony had about four such windows per room to a total of 16. The roof was blue.

From one of the rooms, Jack could see two blonde ladies with bright auburn eyes looking at him, one dressed in a black suit with a skirt reaching just above the knees and the other dressed in a noblewoman's blue dress.

Jack's attention was taken from the two ladies and back to Victor. "I hope that answered the question, even a little bit."
