Chapter 108: The Eye of Deception
The heavy hiss of the Red Knightmare Frame's cockpit resonated through the cavernous bunker. Mina Kimo stepped out, her silver hair shimmering under the dim, flickering lights of the underground base. With a fluid, desperate motion, she jumped from the height of the machine, landing on the cold concrete floor with a thud. She began to walk toward Spero, her hands raised in a sign of surrender, her heart heavy with the weight of Ren's apparent betrayal.
"Grab her!" Spero shouted, his voice echoing with triumphant glee.
Immediately, the five elite mercenaries—the "Kara Phantoms"—lunged forward. They pinned Mina's arms behind her back, their heavy combat boots scraping against the stone. Mina didn't fight back. She kept her eyes on the Purple Knightmare Frame, waiting for a sign, a signal, or a miracle.
And then, the miracle happened. But it wasn't the kind Mina had prayed for.
The hatch of the Purple Knightmare Frame slid open. Ren Vority stood up, balancing on the edge of the cockpit. He wasn't reaching for a weapon. He wasn't charging his Vane energy. Instead, he simply looked down at the scene below with a chilling, serene smile.
Spero looked up, his pistol still pressed against Hana's temple. "Why are you smiling, Butcher? You've lost everything. Your sister is my captive, and your girl is in my hands."
Ren didn't say a word. He focused his gaze directly on Spero. Suddenly, his new left eye—the gift from Thomas that Mina had implanted—began to hum with a low, vibrational frequency. The sapphire blue iris bled into a deep, necrotic red. At its center, a sharp, black 'X' manifested, pulsing with a rhythmic light that seemed to trap the very air around them.
"Kill your team members with your pistol," Ren commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a weight that seemed to vibrate in the very souls of those who heard it.
Mina watched in horror as Spero's eyes suddenly turned the same shade of crimson. The smug, arrogant expression on his face dissolved into a blank, hollow stare. Without a moment's hesitation, Spero turned his gun away from Hana. He moved with a robotic, unnatural precision.
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
Five shots rang out in rapid succession. The five mercenaries holding Mina didn't even have time to scream. The bullets found their marks with terrifying accuracy—each one a clean headshot. The bodies of the Kara Phantoms slumped to the floor, their blood pooling around Mina's boots.
Mina gasped, falling to her knees. She looked at Spero, who was standing like a statue, his smoking gun still raised. "Ren... what did you do?" she whispered, her voice trembling with a primal fear.
Ren's smile didn't fade. It grew wider, darker. He looked at Spero one last time. "Now... kill yourself."
Spero didn't argue. He didn't struggle. He slowly raised the barrel of the pistol to his own chin. His finger pulled the trigger without a single tremor of regret.
BOOM.
The leader of the Kara Group fell backward, his lifeless body landing in the dust. The man who had terrorized Sector 7 and manipulated the Master Instructor was gone, extinguished by a single sentence.
Mina scrambled backward, her breath coming in short, panicked bursts. She looked at Ren as he jumped down from the frame, landing softly among the corpses. He didn't look like the man she had kissed in the bunker. He looked like a god of death. She retreated toward her Red Knightmare Frame, her hand reaching for the latch, her mind screaming that she was in the presence of something ancient and evil.
Ren turned his head. His red eye with the black 'X' locked onto Mina's.
"Forget everything that happened here," Ren said, his voice smooth and hypnotic. "Remember only this: there was a fierce fight. I used my skills to defeat them all. You saw the struggle. You saw the victory. But you saw no red eye. You saw no 'X'."
Mina's pupils dilated. The terror in her eyes began to fade, replaced by a dull, compliant red glow. Her memories began to shift and warp, the image of Spero's suicide being overwritten by a mental montage of Ren fighting heroically against the mercenaries.
Ren walked past her, his footsteps silent. He reached the wheelchair where Hana sat, still blindfolded and shivering. He reached out and gently removed the cloth from her eyes.
"Big brother?" Hana sobbed, her vision blurry as she looked up. "Is it over? Is everyone... is everyone gone?"
Ren knelt in front of her. "It's over, Hana. But I need you to do something for me. Close your eyes and listen to my voice."
"Ren, what are you—?" Mina started to ask, her voice sounding dazed.
"Silence," Ren commanded. "Both of you. From this moment on, the memory of this bunker is a memory of a hard-won battle. We won because we were stronger. We won because we are family. The details... they don't matter."
Hana's eyes and Mina's eyes both flashed red for a fleeting second. The glow faded as quickly as it had appeared, leaving them both blinking in the dim light, their faces softening into expressions of relief and exhaustion.
"We did it," Mina said, a bright, genuine smile breaking across her face. "Ren, you were incredible! I can't believe you took them all down so fast!"
Hana threw herself forward, her arms wrapping around Ren's neck in a tight, desperate hug. "Thank you, big brother! I knew you would come! I knew you wouldn't let him hurt me!"
Ren held his sister close, his hand stroking her hair. The red light in his eye vanished, returning to its normal, sapphire-blue state. He looked over Hana's shoulder at the bodies on the floor—the carnage he had caused with a single thought.
"It was my duty, Hana," Ren said, his voice returning to its calm, protective tone. "No need for thanks. Come on, let's go home. This place is finished."
The Siege of the Bunker
As Ren helped Hana into the back of a transport vehicle he had hidden nearby, the sound of the world finally caught up to them.
The siren's wail was no longer distant. It was right outside the entrance of the bunker. Thousands of blue and white lights flashed against the trees.
"THIS IS THE ATHELGARD ROYAL GUARD! REN VORITY, MINA KIMO, SURRENDER IMMEDIATELY! YOU ARE SURROUNDED!"
Ren looked up at the ceiling of the bunker. He could hear the heavy thud of Knightmare Frames—the government models—landing on the surface above. The entire sector had been locked down. The police, the Vaners, and the elite guards were all here, their weapons aimed at the only exit.
Ren looked at Mina, then at his sister. He had saved his family, but he had become a monster to do it. And now, the kingdom he had tried to protect was ready to tear him apart.
"Mina," Ren said, his eyes glowing with a cold, sapphire light. "Get back in the Purple Frame. We aren't going to surrender."
Mina nodded, her eyes filled with trust, her mind completely wiped of the horror she had just witnessed. "Right behind you, Ren. Let's show them what a real Vaner can do."
Ren looked at the Red 'X' that lingered in the back of his vision—a permanent stain on his soul. The war wasn't over. It was just moving to the surface.
