Chapter 110 - Chapter 111: The Dying Core and the King’s Silence

Chapter 111: The Dying Core and the King's Silence

The atmosphere inside the "Chamber of Sovereigns" was suffocating. The room, carved from the very bedrock of Athelgard, was designed to be a neutral ground for the three great powers of the world. But today, the air was thick with the scent of impending war and ancient grudges.

At the center of the triangular obsidian table sat King Zero of Athelgard, his expression unreadable behind his silver mask. To his left was Prince Minato, the grieving and furious heir of the Onyx Reach, standing where his father, King Marzerk, should have been. To Zero's right sat King Yori of the Iron Archipelago, a man whose calm demeanor hid a heart of cold steel.

"Let us begin," King Zero's voice echoed, cold and authoritative. "The world is burning, and you two are holding the torches. Tell me, why are we at the brink of total annihilation?"

Prince Minato slammed his fist onto the obsidian table, the vibrations rattling the crystal glasses. "You know why, Zero! This snake," he pointed a trembling finger at King Yori, "ordered the assassination of my father. King Marzerk didn't die of natural causes. He was poisoned by an Archipelago agent!"

King Yori didn't even blink. He leaned back, crossing his legs elegantly. "Vague accusations born of grief, Prince Minato. My kingdom had no reason to kill your father. We were trade partners."

"Trade partners until he stopped the exports!" Minato roared. "My father realized that the Iron Archipelago was stockpiling Vane-crystals to build a secret fleet. He cut the supply to protect the balance of power, and you killed him for it! I have the evidence of the intercepted messages!"

"Those messages are forgeries," Yori replied smoothly, his voice devoid of emotion. "You are simply using your father's death as an excuse to launch an unprovoked invasion of our coastal refineries. You want our tech; don't pretend this is about justice."

King Zero raised a hand, silencing them both. The room went dead quiet. "I do not care about your petty squabbles over trade or assassinations. What I care about is the impact this war is having on Athelgard. My borders are being flooded with refugees, and your Knightmare skirmishes are destabilizing the atmospheric Vane levels."

Minato glared at the masked King. "This is a private matter between Onyx and the Archipelago, Zero. Stay out of it. We will settle this on the battlefield."

"Settling it on the battlefield means settling it on my doorstep," Zero countered, his eyes narrowing. "Do not forget who holds the ultimate leverage. The Vane Core—the source of all magical energy in this world—sits beneath this very city. If you do not cease your hostilities immediately, I will seize the Core and initiate a total mana-purge. I will blast the Core, and when it goes, every Vane-user, every Knightmare Frame, and every enchanted city will turn to dust in seconds. No one will survive. Do you understand?"

The threat was absolute. A suicide pact for the entire planet. King Yori's mask of calm finally slipped, a hint of sweat appearing on his brow.

However, Prince Minato did not back down. Instead, he began to laugh—a bitter, hollow sound. He stood up, towering over the table.

"You think we fear your threats, Zero?" Minato sneered. "Go ahead. Blast the Core. You'd only be speeding up the inevitable. Have your scientists not told you? The Vane is already dying! The energy levels across the globe are dropping every hour. In a matter of months, the Vane count will hit zero on its own. We are fighting this war now because soon, we won't even have the power to fly our ships! If you want to interfere, Zero, the blood will be on your hands. But remember... I am not afraid of a king who rules over a dying sun."

Minato turned on his heel and marched toward the exit. King Yori followed shortly after, giving Zero a final, lingering look of disdain. The summit was a failure.

The Price of Knowledge

Inside the room, only King Zero and his personal protector, Lira, remained. Lira stood at attention near the shadows of the door. She had heard everything—the accusations, the secret of the dying Vane Core, and the King's desperate threat.

King Zero stood up slowly, his back to Lira. He looked out the narrow slit of a window at the sprawling city of Athelgard, which looked so peaceful yet sat upon a ticking time bomb.

"Lira," Zero said softly.

"Yes, my King?" she replied, stepping forward.

"You have served me well. You were there when I took the throne. You were there when we founded the Academy."

"It has been my honor, Sire," Lira said, her head bowed in respect.

Zero turned around. In one swift, blurred motion, he drew a silenced pistol from the small of his back. Before Lira could even register the movement, or even reach for her Vane-blade, a single shot rang out.

Thwip.

The bullet entered her forehead with surgical precision. Lira's eyes widened for a split second, a look of pure confusion and betrayal frozen on her face, before the light vanished from them. She collapsed to the floor, her body thudding softly against the carpet.

King Zero stood over her, his breath steady. He looked at the smoking barrel of the gun and then at the woman who would have died to protect him.

I cannot let this leak, Zero thought, his mind cold and calculating. If the people know the Vane is dying, there will be riots. If the army knows I am willing to blow up the Core, there will be a coup. My reputation, my order... it must be preserved at any cost. I am sorry, Lira, but secrets are only safe with the dead.

He walked toward the door and opened it slightly, signaling the guards outside.

"There is a body inside," Zero commanded, his voice as flat as a grave. "Dispose of it. Quietly. Ensure it is never found."

"Yes, Your Majesty," the guards whispered, rushing into the room.

King Zero walked down the hallway, his cape flowing behind him like a shroud. He had saved his secret, but he had lost his soul.

A World Away: The Quiet Life

While the kings of the world plotted their own destruction, life in the suburban districts of Athelgard continued in a surreal state of normalcy.

Mika sat on the porch of her small, wooden home, watching the sunset. She had officially resigned from the Vaner Academy weeks ago, citing "personal exhaustion" and "family matters." To the world, she was just another retired instructor. To herself, she was a woman trying to find peace in a world that was falling apart.

She sipped her tea, the steam rising into the cool evening air. There were no sirens here. No Knightmare Frames. No "Most Wanted" posters. Just the sound of the wind in the trees and the distant hum of civilian transport vehicles.

Mika looked at her hands. They no longer felt the itch to draw a weapon or channel Vane energy. She had lived a life of violence and politics for too long. Now, she just wanted to be Mika—a normal girl with a normal life.

But as she looked at the orange glow of the horizon, she felt a strange, nagging sensation in the pit of her stomach. The air felt... thinner. The colors of the sunset seemed a bit duller than they used to be.

"Is it just me?" she whispered to the empty porch.

She didn't know about the meeting of the kings. She didn't know about the dying Core. But deep down, the instincts of a former Vaner told her that this peace was an illusion. The storm was coming, and when it hit, no home—no matter how small or normal—would be safe.

Mika closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to savor the silence while it lasted.
