Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Torn Between Choices

The night felt colder than usual as Amara stepped onto the empty street.

Her heels clicked sharply against the pavement, each sound echoing like a countdown in her chest.

The city lights flickered faintly, casting long shadows over the walls of the buildings, but none of it mattered.

All that mattered was the storm raging inside her.

Her hands instinctively rested on her stomach, where a life she barely understood was growing.

A life that belonged to a man who had just married someone else.

A man who was standing somewhere back in that apartment, arguing with her best friend's rival, Chioma.

And a woman who, despite everything, was smiling faintly at her pain.

Amara's phone vibrated in her pocket.

She ignored it.

She didn't want to hear the sound of Tunde's name. She didn't want to hear anyone — not tonight.

Not after everything.

Her chest ached with a thousand unspoken questions, a thousand tears that refused to fall.

She had imagined telling Tunde the news differently. Joyfully. Carefully. Quietly.

Never like this.

A soft breeze carried the distant sound of laughter from nearby cafes. Couples strolling, holding hands, oblivious to the chaos that had consumed her life.

Lucky them, she thought bitterly.

Her phone buzzed again, insistent this time. She finally gave in and pulled it out.

It was a message from an unknown number.

"Amara, we need to meet. You're in danger."

Her heart jumped into her throat.

Danger?

From who?

She stared at the screen, trying to ignore the tremor in her fingers.

And then it hit her — the unease she had felt all night, the subtle tension creeping over her like a shadow… maybe it wasn't just Chioma or Tunde.

Maybe it was something bigger.

She walked faster, her mind racing.

By the time she reached the small café at the corner, her pulse was pounding like a drum.

Inside, a lone figure sat at a corner table, hood drawn low over their face.

Amara's stomach twisted.

"Are… are you the one who sent the message?" she asked cautiously, her voice trembling slightly.

The figure lifted their head slowly.

And her breath caught.

It was someone she hadn't expected.

Someone from her past.

Someone she had tried to forget.

"Amara."

The voice was smooth, calm — but cold.

She knew that voice anywhere.

"David?" she whispered, her fingers tightening around her bag strap.

He nodded once, expression unreadable.

"You shouldn't be out here," he said softly, almost gently. "Not tonight."

"I could say the same to you," she replied, trying to keep her voice steady.

David leaned back slightly, eyes never leaving hers.

"I know about the baby," he said quietly.

Amara froze.

Her heart lurched.

How does everyone know?!

"I… I don't know what you mean," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

David's lips curved into the faintest smile.

"You think Tunde and Chioma are the only ones involved?"

Amara's mind spun.

"What are you talking about?" she demanded, panic rising.

David leaned forward now, tone low, almost dangerous.

"Amara… there are people who want this baby gone. People who will stop at nothing to make sure you disappear."

Her stomach dropped.

"No… that can't be…"

But deep down, she knew he wasn't lying.

The wedding. The threats. Chioma's sudden involvement. Everything was connected.

David placed a hand gently on hers.

"You have to be careful. They're watching. They're always watching."

Amara pulled her hand back sharply.

"I don't understand," she said, shaking her head. "Why me? Why now?"

David's eyes darkened.

"Because the baby isn't just a child. It's the key. The key to everything."

"What do you mean?"

"That child… Amara… could change everything."

Amara felt her chest tighten.

Change everything?

She wanted to scream, cry, run… do anything to escape the rising terror that filled her chest.

Tears spilled over suddenly, unbidden, as the enormity of her situation sank in.

Tunde married Chioma.

She was carrying a baby.

Someone from her past knew the truth.

And now… there were threats she couldn't even name.

Her hands trembled violently.

David leaned forward again, lowering his voice.

"You need allies," he said. "And you need to decide… who you can trust."

Amara blinked rapidly, trying to comprehend the weight of his words.

"Trust?" she whispered. "I trusted Tunde. I trusted Chioma. I trusted myself. But…"

She swallowed hard, voice shaking. "…I don't know if I can trust anyone anymore."

David's gaze softened slightly, but the edge in his eyes remained.

"You have to," he said firmly. "Or you won't survive this."

Amara shook her head violently, tears streaming freely now.

"How am I supposed to survive this?"

"By being smart," he said quietly. "By staying ahead of them. By protecting your baby. And… by facing the truth."

The truth.

Her stomach twisted again.

Could she even face it?

Could she face Tunde? Chioma? The baby?

A sudden noise outside the café made them both tense.

Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate.

Amara's heart leapt into her throat.

David's hand brushed hers for a fraction of a second — a gesture meant to calm, to protect — but it did little to steady her racing pulse.

"They know you're here," he whispered.

Before she could respond, the door swung open.

A shadow fell across their table.

And Amara's worst fears crystallized into reality.

Cliffhanger:

Standing there… in the doorway…

Was someone she never wanted to see again.

Someone who could destroy everything…

And they were smiling.
