Chapter 5 - The First Threat

KAEL POV:

The messengers started arriving before sunrise.

Kael stood in the fortress war room and watched them flood through the gates. Envoys from the northern territories. Scouts from the neutral lands. Runners from packs he'd never even heard of. The news had spread like wildfire through the wolf world. A Moon-Blessed human. Found. In Shadowmere territory. Under Kael's protection.

Everything was moving too fast.

"We have confirmation from three different sources," Evan said, pointing at the map sprawled across the table. "The Sunfire Pack sent an envoy with gifts and a request for an audience. The Crimson wolves are demanding we hand her over for collective protection. And the Obsidian Pack has gone quiet which means they're planning something."

Kael's fists clenched. He knew Royce Blackthorn. Knew the kind of ruthless ambition that drove him. If Royce thought he could control Aria's power, he wouldn't hesitate. He'd attack without mercy. He'd burn the entire fortress to ash if it meant getting what he wanted.

"Double the guard on the outer walls," Kael commanded. "Triple the patrols. I want every entrance monitored. And get Aria to the highest tower where she's protected on all sides."

"Already done," Evan said. "But Kael, we can't hold off every pack in the wolf world. If they decide to come at us together, we're outnumbered ten to one."

Kael knew that. The calculation had been running through his head since the moment the bond activated. He had maybe fifty warriors in his fortress. The Obsidian Pack alone had over two hundred. And if the other territories decided to move against him, decided that keeping Aria alive was a threat to the established order, he was finished.

But he'd rather die than let her be taken.

"Get the texts out," he told Evan. "Show the envoys what Moon-Blessed means. Let them understand what she is. Maybe fear of her power will stop them from attacking."

Evan looked skeptical but he nodded and left to spread the word.

Kael moved through the fortress like a caged wolf. He checked the walls. He walked the patrols. He positioned warriors in defensive formations. And all the while, his wolf was restless under his skin. The fated bond was still pulling at him, making him want to go to Aria. Make sure she was safe. Keep her close where nothing could touch her.

Night fell and Kael finally went to the highest tower.

Aria was standing at the window, looking out at the fortress grounds. Torches burned along the walls. Warriors moved in careful patterns. Everything was prepared for siege. She turned when he entered and he saw the fear in her eyes.

"How many?" she asked quietly.

"We don't know yet," he said honestly. "But Royce won't wait long. The Obsidian Pack sees you as a tool. If he can take you, he believes he can control the entire wolf hierarchy."

"So everyone wants me," Aria said. It wasn't a question. "Everyone wants to use me."

Kael moved closer. The bond between them pulled tight and warm and necessary.

"I don't want to use you," he said. "I want to keep you alive."

But even as the words left his mouth, he could see her wince. Could see the way she pulled back slightly. She was trapped again. Protected but caged. And he was the one building the walls around her.

The alarm bells came at midnight.

Kael heard the sound and his entire body went alert. Fire. Somewhere outside the walls, something was burning. He ran to the ramparts and his blood went cold.

The Obsidian Pack was breaching the eastern wall.

There were at least fifty of them in wolf form, crashing through the gates with violence that shook the entire fortress. Behind them, warriors were setting fires to the wooden structures along the perimeter. They wanted chaos. They wanted confusion while they hunted for Aria.

"All warriors to the east wall," Kael shouted. He could already feel his wolf pushing to the surface. Feel the need to transform and fight.

"Kael, wait," Evan called from behind him. "Let the warriors handle it. You need to stay with Aria."

But Kael was already stripping off his clothes. His bones were shifting. His human face was dissolving. The transformation was violent and fast and it tore through him like lightning.

He burst onto the battlefield as a massive wolf with fur black as night. Royce's wolves tried to meet him and he tore through them like paper. His claws ripped. His teeth snapped. His wolf howled a sound so primal it made the younger wolves falter.

He fought toward Royce and found him in the center of the chaos. A scarred beast with amber eyes and blood already dripping from his jaws.

Royce snarled and lunged.

They collided hard enough to shake the ground. Teeth and claws and the desperate violence of two Alphas fighting for dominance. Kael felt Royce's fangs catch his shoulder and tasted his own blood. He threw Royce against the stone wall and heard bone crack.

But even as he was fighting, even as he was defending his fortress, part of his mind was somewhere else.

In the tower. With Aria.

And that was a weakness he couldn't afford.

Aria watched from the window as Kael transformed.

She'd never seen a werewolf before. Not really. Not in the middle of battle. Kael's human form was beautiful and devastating but his wolf form was something else entirely. He was enormous. Pure power and primal fury. And when he threw himself into the fight, it was like watching death itself walk across the battlefield.

He tore through Royce's warriors like they meant nothing. Like they were obstacles between him and something he needed to protect.

Her.

Aria realized it then. He wasn't fighting to win. He was fighting to keep them away from her. Fighting to buy time. Fighting because his wolf had recognized her as something sacred and it would rather die than let her be taken.

And for the first time since she'd met him, Aria understood what Kael's devotion was going to cost him.

A warrior screamed from the courtyard. Fire was spreading. More of Royce's pack was pouring through a secondary breach in the northern wall. The fortress was being overwhelmed. Kael could kill a hundred wolves but he was only one Alpha and there were too many enemies.

If this kept going, Kael would die protecting her.

That realization hit Aria harder than anything physical ever could. She watched him fighting and realized something impossible and terrifying. She didn't want him to die for her. She didn't want his blood on her conscience. She didn't want to be another reason for him to suffer.

But she also understood something else watching him move across that battlefield.

He had already chosen. His wolf had made the decision the moment he found her in the snow. He would burn the world down to keep her safe. And if she tried to make him leave her, he would refuse. Because that's what the fated bond meant. It meant choosing her over everything else, forever.

Below, Kael finally drove Royce back across the battlefield. The scarred Alpha was bleeding and limping and Kael's wolf was relentless. Royce's remaining warriors scattered, dragging their wounded with them as they fled into the forest.

Kael transformed back to human form, gasping and covered in blood. Warriors rushed to help him but his eyes found Aria in the tower window. Their gazes locked across the distance and she felt the bond between them hum with intensity.

He'd won. But only barely.

And they both knew this was just the beginning.

Evan ran up to Kael with a fresh cloak. His expression was grim.

"We have a problem," he said. "During the attack, one of Royce's scouts got close to the tower. He might have seen Aria clearly. If he reports back to Royce, word will spread. Every Alpha in the territories will know exactly where she is and what she looks like."

Kael looked up at the tower where Aria was still watching him.

"Then they're coming," he said quietly. "All of them. We won't be able to stop them all."

"No," Evan agreed. "We won't."

The fortress had won tonight's battle. But the war was just beginning. And in the distance, fires were being lit on hilltops. Signal fires. Messages spreading from pack to pack across the wolf territories.

A Moon-Blessed human had been found in Shadowmere.

And the entire wolf world was about to go to war over her.
