Chapter 48 - Chapter 48- Solid accusations

Her eyes moved instinctively across the room, towards her uncle who was already watching her.

Something unreadable flickered briefly across his face before concern returned almost instantly. "Surely you are not suggesting foul play," he said smoothly.

The older officer answered cautiously. "At present, my lord, we are considering all possibilities."

"All possibilities," Lord Simon repeated softly.

The officer turned back toward Penelope. "Miss Anderson, we were informed you were among the last individuals known to have spoken extensively with Lord Ashbourne before his disappearance."

"I-I saw him some days back," she answered quietly.

"Did his lordship appear distressed?"

"No."

"Troubled?"

"No."

"Fearful?"

That question caught her unexpectedly. Penelope hesitated, because now that she thought upon it, Lord Philip did seem a bit distracted that day.

"He seemed…" She frowned slightly. "Preoccupied."

"With what?"

"I… do not know."
