Chapter 46 - The Warmest House in Eryndor II

Her voice carried a warmth that immediately made the entire room feel quieter. "I'm Ruby. It's wonderful to finally meet you."

Adrian returned the elegant bow smoothly. "I'm Adrian. It's an honour."

Ruby shook her head gently, her expression filled with a quiet humility. "No," she smiled kindly. "The honour is entirely ours."

She studied his features for only a heartbeat not nearly long enough to seem rude, but just enough to capture his alignment. Something in her expression softened almost imperceptibly as her elven senses mapped his profile. She could feel it. It wasn't his active thoughts or his hidden secrets she was registering, but the absolute cadence of his heart. She felt his profound exhaustion, the crushing responsibility, and a deep-seated loneliness Adrian himself rarely acknowledged on his own ledger. And beneath all of it, she registered something older, something deeply bruised, and something that had recently stood inside a tragic theatre no mortal should ever find.

Ruby said none of this out loud. Instead, she simply smiled. "You've travelled a very long way."

Adrian blinked once. "We have."

"You must be very tired."

He let out a quiet, honest laugh. "I don't think I truly realised exactly how tired I was until you said it."

Ruby nodded gently, her demeanor an anchor of comfort. "Then we'll fix that problem first. There will be no questions, and no interrogation today. Just simple kindness." She turned her torso toward the stove where her husband was fussing. "Theron, our guest hasn't eaten a real meal."

Theron's icy blue eyes widened in theatrical horror. "He hasn't?"

Adrian opened his mouth to object. "I actually had lunch on the trail—"

Theron pointed his dripping wooden spoon directly at his chest. "Salted, dried meat doesn't count as a meal, lad."

"It definitely does if you're travelling across the frontier."

"No," the enormous elf folded his massive, scarred arms over his chest. "It counts exclusively as surviving. It does not count as eating."

Adrian glanced sideways at Elena. "Is this choice negotiable?"

She smiled a rare, amused smile. "No. You're completely doomed."

"I was deeply afraid of that."

Just then, a loud, resounding crash echoed violently from the floorboards upstairs, followed immediately by an excited, high-pitched shout. "I FOUND IT!"

Theron closed his eyes tightly. "No."

Another voice chimed in from the upper landing. "Dad!" Tiny, rapid footsteps thundered frantically across the second floor. "I FINALLY FOUND THE SPRING MACHINE!"

Theron pinched the bridge of his bald nose in defeat. "Please tell me that isn't coming from my engineering workshop."

Absolute silence hung over the ceiling for a beat, before a tentative voice called back down. "Maybe?"

The giant elf let out a heavy sigh the precise sigh of a father who had fully accepted years ago that household peace was merely a pleasant rumor. He looked back at Adrian, deadpan. "My daughter. Ask her questions at your own individual risk."

Before Adrian could even formulate a reply, the sound of impossibly fast footsteps raced down the wooden staircase. It was a complete blur of vibrant green fabric, brown leather, and tiny, fluttering, leaf-like wings. A little High Elf girl practically launched herself around the corner into the kitchen, clutching what appeared to be a tiny brass gear in one hand, with a pair of oversized leather magnifying goggles perched crookedly on top of her head. She came to a halt so suddenly that her boots nearly slipped across the clean floor. Her brilliant blue eyes grew impossibly wide as she locked onto the guests. She looked at Adrian, then at Elena, then snapped her gaze right back to Adrian's face.

Her mouth slowly fell open in pure awe. "You..." She pointed her brass gear dramatically at his nose. "You're actually Adrian!"

The kitchen became completely quiet. Theron looked up toward the wooden ceiling beams. "Three."

Ruby smiled a knowing smile.

Adrian's brow furrowed. "Three?"

Theron given a grim nod. "It took her exactly three seconds to track you down."

Mira took one determined, stomping step forward, then another, and then a third, until she stood directly in front of Adrian's waist. She looked him up, looked him down, and then walked in a complete, silent circle around his boots twice, without saying a single word of explanation. Finally, she stopped dead in her tracks, resting her index finger thoughtfully against her small chin.

She looked directly into Adrian's eyes and asked with complete, unadulterated sincerity, "So... if you're actually half slime... why aren't you sticky?"

The entire kitchen fell into an absolute, dead silence. Theron slowly closed his eyes in secondary embarrassment, Ruby covered her wide smile with one hand, and Elena quietly turned her head away toward the glass window to hide her amusement.

Adrian burst out laughing. For the very first time since entering the dark, oppressive western forests, his laughter wasn't a forced performance to maintain a mask, and it wasn't a polite social protocol. It was entirely real, echoing warmly through the house.

Adrian leaned his weight casually against one of the solid kitchen counters, still smiling to himself after Mira's completely serious interrogation. "So..." he said with a low chuckle, crossing his arms. "You want to know why I'm not sticky?"

Mira nodded her head enthusiastically. "Yes, exactly."

She pulled a tiny, worn leather notebook from one of the countless pockets stitched into her explorer's vest, flipping it open with astonishing speed. A small charcoal pencil appeared in her other hand almost magically between her fingers. "I'm actively making scientific observations."

Theron let out a soft groan. "She's making another notebook, Adrian."

Ruby smiled warmly, her knife moving smoothly as she began to slice a fresh loaf of bread on the board. "It's her twelfth full volume this year, if I'm counting correctly."

"They're highly organised logs," Mira defended herself, her ears twitching.

"They're scattered everywhere in the house, dear," Theron replied flatly.

"They're organised everywhere."

Adrian laughed out loud. "I think I actually like your logical system, Mira."

Mira beamed with pride, her leaf-like wings fluttering. "I knew with absolute certainty you would." She looked back down at her blank page, tapping the charcoal pencil thoughtfully against her lip. "So... back to the sticky question?"

Adrian rubbed the back of his neck, a dry look crossing his features. "Honestly... I don't actually know the answer to that."

Everyone in the room looked at his face.

"I've never really sat down and thought about the properties of my skin," he explained.

Mira's blue eyes widened to dinner plates. "You've never once tested your own slime thresholds?"

"No."

"Why on earth not?"

"I had a lot of weightier things going on with the town council and the warchiefs, Mira."

She stared up at his broad frame with an expression of complete, utter disbelief. "You became a legendary half slime adventurer... and you didn't perform a single scientific experiment on your own core?"

Adrian paused, running the logic through his mind. "When you phrase the timeline exactly like that... it does sound a bit negligent."

Theron immediately pointed his wooden spoon toward Adrian's chest, his voice dropping. "Don't you dare encourage her research, Mayor."

"I'm not encouraging anything, Theron."

"You absolutely are encouraging her."

Mira looked between the two men with an excited spark in her eyes. "We could run some baseline tests right now after dinner!"

Ruby set another steaming loaf of bread onto the oak table, her voice clear and authoritative. "Absolutely no explosions inside this house, Mira."

Mira gave a solemn nod, bargaining quickly. "No big explosions, Mama."

Ruby raised an inquisitive eyebrow. "Mira... are you implying small explosions are acceptable?"

Theron immediately shook his head cleanly, shutting down the script. "No explosions of any scale in the kitchen."

The little elf girl let out a dramatically heavy sigh, her shoulders slumping. "I live under completely impossible research restrictions in this house."

Adrian laughed harder than he had in full weeks, the lingering dread of Velcrest's theater completely evaporating into the cozy, domestic safety of House Sylvaris.
