Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 19: THE ONE WHO DECIDES WHO PLAYS

The corridor didn't return to normal.

Not really.

People still moved.

Games still happened.

Whispers still spread.

But now—

There was a line.

Not drawn.

Not marked.

Felt.

Yue Ning slowed down.

"…Do you feel that?"

Mei Chen nodded.

"…Yeah."

Lin Xia didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

They had reached a point in the game where—

Not everyone was allowed to go further.

🔹 THE CROWD

A group had gathered ahead.

Not cheering.

Not betting.

Watching.

Quietly.

That alone made it dangerous.

"…Something's happening," Mei Chen muttered.

They pushed forward.

And saw him.

🔹 THE GATEKEEPER

A boy stood in the middle of the corridor.

Not flashy.

Not psychotic.

But unlike everyone else—

People didn't just avoid him.

They respected the distance.

Like an unspoken rule.

"…Who is he?" Yue Ning whispered.

A voice from behind them answered:

"…If you want to go deeper…"

They turned.

"…you have to pass him."

Silence.

🔹 THE RULE

The boy spoke without looking at them.

"…You've been winning."

A pause.

"…But winning here doesn't matter."

Now he looked up.

Eyes calm.

Sharp.

"…I decide who plays at the next level."

Mei Chen smirked slightly.

"…And who decided that?"

"…The system," he replied.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

That was what made it unsettling.

🔹 THE CONDITION

A screen appeared.

But different.

ACCESS MATCH REQUIRED

Yue Ning frowned.

"…Access?"

"…You don't just walk forward anymore," the Gatekeeper said.

"…You earn it."

🔹 THE TWIST

Lin Xia stepped forward.

"…All three of us."

The Gatekeeper shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…Only one of you plays."

Silence.

Mei Chen immediately spoke:

"…I'll—"

"…No," Lin Xia said.

They both looked at her.

"…Not this time."

Her eyes shifted slightly.

To Yue Ning.

"…You."

Yue Ning froze.

"…Me?"

"…You saw what the system couldn't," Lin Xia said quietly.

"…Now prove it."

🔹 PRESSURE

The corridor went still.

People leaned in.

Watching.

Because this—

Was different.

Not a random challenge.

Not chaos.

This was selection.

🔹 THE GAME

"…Choose," the Gatekeeper said.

Yue Ning swallowed.

Her mind raced.

Not fast.

Deep.

"…Something with layers," she whispered.

Then—

"…Scrabble."

Mei Chen blinked.

"…Scrabble?"

Yue Ning nodded slowly.

"…It's not just words."

A pause.

"…It's thinking ahead."

The Gatekeeper's eyes sharpened slightly.

"…Good."

🔹 THE ARENA

The floor shifted.

Letters formed across a giant board.

Clean.

Ordered.

But beneath it—

Something else.

Hidden patterns.

🔹 THE REAL GAME

Tiles appeared.

Both players stood opposite.

No timer.

No pressure.

Just—

Possibility.

🔹 THE FIRST MOVE

The Gatekeeper placed a word:

"START"

Simple.

Too simple.

Yue Ning stared at it.

Not the word.

The placement.

"…He's controlling the board flow," she whispered.

🔹 YUE NING THINKS

She placed her tiles.

"TRACE"

Connecting.

Expanding.

Not blocking.

Building.

🔹 PATTERN WAR He plays short words—tight control She plays expanding words—opening space He restricts She spreads

Two philosophies.

Two systems.

🔹 REALIZATION

Mid-game—

Yue Ning froze slightly.

"…He's not playing words."

Lin Xia's voice came softly:

"…Then what is he playing?"

"…Positions."

🔹 BREAKTHROUGH

Yue Ning changed.

Her next word—

Didn't score high.

Didn't even look smart.

But—

It broke his structure.

The Gatekeeper paused.

First time.

🔹 PRESSURE SHIFT

The crowd whispered:

"She's messing up…""That was a bad play…"

But Lin Xia smiled faintly.

"…No."

"…That was the move."

🔹 FINAL MOMENT

Board filled.

No space left.

Final turn.

The Gatekeeper placed his last word.

Clean.

Controlled.

High score.

The crowd murmured.

"…She lost…"

Yue Ning looked at the board.

Quiet.

Then—

Placed her final tiles.

Not big.

Not flashy.

But—

Perfect placement.

Using every remaining space.

🔹 RESULT

The board calculated.

Paused.

Then—

WIN CONFIRMED

Silence.

🔹 AFTERMATH

The Gatekeeper looked at her.

Long.

Carefully.

"…You don't chase points."

Yue Ning shook her head slightly.

"…I chase outcomes."

A pause.

Then—

He stepped aside.

Just slightly.

🔹 ACCESS GRANTED

The screen appeared:

ACCESS UNLOCKED

The corridor ahead—

Changed.

Darker.

Deeper.

More dangerous.

🔹 FINAL LINE

Mei Chen grinned.

"…Okay… now it's getting interesting."

Lin Xia looked forward.

Calm.

"…This is where the real game starts."

And somewhere—

Far deeper in the system—

Something stirred.

Not yet revealed.

But watching.

Waiting.
