Chapter 1 :And So My Watch Begins

The Great Hall of Winterfell smelled of iron and wet fur.

Arthur stood in chains, getting dragged by a few Kingsguard in their golden chest plates as he sighed.

Snow melted slowly on the stone floor beneath his boots, dripping from his ragged cloak. Two guards held the iron links attached to his wrists, though he wasn't resisting. There was nowhere to run anyway.

Not here, not in front of them. He could've run but it was futile. There were around 500 soldiers from the Starks and 1000 more from the King of the 7 Realm, all stronger than him in leaps and with armour to boot

As he walked inside the room, he saw him, at the centre of the hall sat the king himself.

Robert Baratheon leaned heavily across the high seat that had been prepared for him. His massive frame filled the chair like a bear that had wandered into a lord's hall. A goblet of wine hung loosely in his hand.

Beside him stood Eddard Stark. He was silent, assessing the poor boy walking with torn clothes yet still looked defiantly back at people who could crush him in pieces in a matter of seconds

He briefly looked on his right, seeing the distinctive royal blonde-hairs of the Lannister's family. There was Cersei Lannister – the King's wife, Jamie Lannister – her brother, and Cersei's children – including Joffrey Lannister, heir of the kingdom in case Robert Baratheon died

On his left, there was the Stark family, their hair black for some – Jon Snow, brown for others, as he finally looked at his feet

And at Arthur's feet laid —

Two bodies.

Or what was left of them, their eyes separated from their heads cleanly.

His mother's red vivid hair he inherited from her was matted with blood where her head had rolled across the stone whilst his father's green eyes – that he also inherited, were still open, staring at nothing in peculiar.

Arthur didn't dare look at them more than a second as he turned away in disgust from the smell.

A Kingsguard stood nearby with a bloody sword, wiping the blade with a cloth as he chuckled at him with a sneer. He tried to ignore as much as possible as he turned his eye to the King, kneeling as he bowed in front of him in respect "My King"

Robert took a long drink before speaking "So," the king said, voice rough with wine – probably had too many of them since it was already at night "This is the boy."

Arthur said nothing. He tried not to show it, but he feared that he'd end up like his parents – their greed had doomed all of them, as he shut his eyes closed.

Ned Stark's grey eyes studied him carefully as if trying to remember who he was "You're Arthur," Ned said. "Son of Maria and Joryn, am I right ?"

Arthur nodded once as Robert snorted, burping disgustingly as he could trace an expression of disgust on his wife's face as his reddening cheeks from drunkenness were visible.

"Thieves, the lot of them" the king shouted as he smashed his wooden keg of beer down – a few drops spilling everywhere carelessly as he downed the drink in a shot, gesturing toward the severed heads. "Tried to rob one of our supply wagons – paid by the Lannisters family, the night we arrived. Bloody fools."

His gaze dropped to Arthur again, his eyes full of suspicion and prejudice as he said, "You helped them, boy?"

Arthur met the king's eyes. He didn't. There was no lie to fabricate which made it all the simpler "No."

The hall stayed quiet before one of the soldiers snorted, as if the thought was absurd.

He was a son of a whore and a thief after all, the lowest type of all and –

Robert raised an eyebrow, perplexed "No?"

He continued, telling the story of what happened "They told me to stay away – " Arthur said calmly before he got caught

One of the soldiers laughed "Sure kid, sure" before he shut up with a look of his King

The king leaned forward slightly "You expect me to believe a thief's son wasn't involved in a heist on my wagon?"

Arthur shrugged lightly despite the chains "Believe what you want. It's the entire truth" and as a few of them started to draw their swords at the slightly slit in his voice, he continued "I may've been a son of thieves, that does not make me one"

Several guards shifted at the insolence but, to everyone's shock, King Robert barked out a sudden laugh as he said "Gods, the boy's got a nasty tongue"

Ned Stark stepped closer, his voice was calmer, colder as he tried to mediate the situation "You were seen near the wagons," Ned said "Running away from it"

Arthur nodded "I was" There was no denying it

"Why?" He asked back as Arthur glanced briefly toward the hall doors.

"Because I tried to stop them from their greed until I saw man shouting from a distance" He replied simply "And shouting men usually bring swords and problems. They didn't listen, as you can see –" gesturing at their corpse "- but at least I've tried, and when it was too late, I was forced to retreat"

"It's not a way to talk to the dead" Warned Ned as Arthur shrugged

"They hated me as much as I hated them" He replied back as he sighed "They tried to make me learn their ways and use me as a shield whenever things got rough. I never helped them of course"

"And you want us to believe that because –" Cersei Lannister suddenly said as he turned to her

"I may be a Low Life, My Queen –" As he gestured around the people in the room "But I'm smart enough to know that petulant heists and whoring myself out won't make me rich so I see no need for either of those practices"

He was lying through his teeth of course. He did learn how to do both. How to please a woman to complete ecstasy, from massages to tongue techniques and spotting the right angles, and how to steal a man's pouch full of gold right under his nose, make him turn to his comrade with a few charismatic and convincing words.

He learned by observing his parents do it and he did try it a few times – especially the stealing one, stealing from those rich assholes always made him feel better for some reason.

Especially when he unlocked those terrible red eyes – the devil's eyes they called between them, refusing to talk about it to anyone for safety reasons and at their advantage when needed.

The first time he used it, it was when a man had tried to kill him and his parent after they'd stole his ample pouch of gold and silver. He'd never forget the first man he killed. It was with a kitchen's knife, but with his red devil eyes, it carved his body like it was a real sword.

The first 'comma' that appeared – yes they called the weird symbol a comma, by lack of knowledge, and he was only able to follow the movements of others with a sort of precognition of a few seconds.

The second appeared after he got into a fight with soldiers he tried to steal from and he killed both before burying their bodies to save his mother's arse as she whored herself out whilst he was stealing from them but they've caught him in the act.

After that second comma, few things changed. He was able to cast strange illusions, removable if the target's will was strong enough to dismiss the illusion, allowing him to manipulate his target's mind and make his thief life easier. But he could also copy movements and reproduce them at the perfection. After years of seeing soldiers fight and train, copying their movements, and other thieves stealing, other whores fucking, he'd learn a lot about them.

He learned how to forge a sword, sew his own clothes amongst all other skills he copied.

The last but not the least, was when the third comma appeared - today, just as he saw the boy fell from the tower, he rushed at full speed, his mind calculating his trajectory as he jumped on the wall and caught him mid-air, rolling swiftly and safely as he saved the poor boy from a terrible fate.

The third one didn't give him other abilities it seemed, but he felt like his overall abilities leaped into a new realm, the feat he did to save the poor boy wouldn't have been possible a few seconds before as the little kid thanked him profusely before disappearing to rush to his worried mother – like nothing freaking happened.

He didn't had the time to accept his mother's thank before he was shoved by 2 shiny Kingsguard inside the castle to answer to his parent's crime.

Anyway, as he wasn't going to just admit all that to the King of the 7 Realm himself, he stayed his mouth shut if not asked to answer. He wasn't stupid enough to try to charm his way out of this shithole

Robert snorted before he barked a laugh "Smart little rat"

Ned remained expressionless, a small smile tugging at his mouth as he tried to focus on the matter "And yet" Ned continued "You did not run far, why is that so ?"

Arthur's gaze flickered toward him again and hesitated a moment "There was a boy climbing the broken tower, he seemed pretty skilled at it, so I let him be for a moment before I saw him slip"

Robert blinked "What? What boy are you talking about, boy ?"

Ned frowned slightly, his eyes widening as he recognized the description of the boy – his boy, Bran Stark, as he was missing from the meeting – just like his wife, and he suddenly stood up, approaching the boy with haste

"Where are they ?" He demanded as Arthur shrugged. He truly did not know. He got carried away from the soldiers before he could ask if he was fine.

"I don't know" He admitted as Ned took him by the collar as if he'd kidnapped them or something "His mother thanked me and then took off with him to tend to the scratch he had on his leg. He's fine, do not worry" as Arthur looked down at the floor

For a moment the hall was silent again as Ned let him off the hook and decided to rush out of the room before the door opened and a woman's voice cut through it.

"He's telling the truth" Said the calm voice as he spun around to see the mother of the child he saved – Caitlin Stark, smiling at him as she ruffled his hair and put her body between him and the rest "Do not harm him"

All eyes turned. Her expression was pale but firm, even Ned looked surprised.

"Catelyn?" He asked as she ignored him to turn to the King

She moved closer, eyes fixed on the King, her eyes briefly meeting Cersei and Jaime Lannister's –the probable culprits it seemed, before bowing elegantly in front of the King "Your grace, my son, Bran, had climbed the old tower again, like he always do. The guards were distracted by the commotion outside the gates and he missed a step. The only reason he's not crippled, or dead is because of this young boy" as she gestured to Arthur

She lied. The boy did not miss a step, he was pushed, but it was a smart choice. Accusing the wife of the King and his brother-in-law in front of a horde of nobles was not a smart move.

He approved as his eyes met Cersei's for a second, her eyes trying to scan if he remembered anything but he held strong, his stoic eyes meeting her cold and calculating one as she tried to decipher the boy's intentions.

She turned around, satisfied, as she resumed her preying.

He wasn't totally off the hook – far from that, but it was a start. Those kinds of women were the worst type, his mother would say, do not turn your back on them and most importantly –

No matter what, don't put your dick in crazy

Robert leaned back as he said with chuckled "You're telling me this skinny little thief caught your son falling from a tower?"

He was not skinny, thank you very much, but he held his tongue.

Catelyn nodded once "Yes, your grace, please do not harm him. He has nothing to do with what happened to your wagons, as the sins of his parents should not be held against him, and he saved my boy's life. Our house owes him a debt"

Ned's sighed as he nodded "She's right my King, the boy had probably nothing to do with it. The reports said that he was just lurking around"

Rober huffed a laughed "Even so, the thieves brat saved a Stark – " He took a big gulp out of his new pint of beer as he looked at him with a mischievous grin "You should be grateful that I'm quite happy today, I shall not behead you"

He released a small sigh of relief he didn't know he was holding.

A soldier spoke up sharply "Your Grace, the boy is still the son of criminals. The crime was against The King of the 7 Real himself and –"

Robert slammed his goblet on the armrest.

"I know whose bloody wagon it was you fool !" He shouted as he glared at the poor guard who cowered in fear as Robert sighed

He looked dismissively at Arthur "Fine. I'll give the boy a choice."

Arthur felt the guards tighten their grip slightly.

Robert leaned forward again.

"Option 1 : You can join your parents and just be done with it" the king said bluntly. Not a chance, but he still listened to any proposition.

His finger pointed toward the blood on the floor "Or…"

He pointed outside for what he knew was pointing at the North.

"Join the Night's Watch" He said simply.

Several men in the hall chuckled as Arthur froze.

He saved their boy, and that was how they repaid him ?

By being a virging ass freezing cold pussy in front of a stupid cold wall?

Robert grinned.

"Take the black. Serve and sworn your life to the Night's Watch. Freeze your balls off for the rest of your life, yes, but you'd stay alive"

Arthur didn't hesitate.

"I'll take the Watch." He said as matter-of-factly, he preferred to survive and he didn't have anything to help him refuse or find an alternative solution anyway, so he was going to be a Brother of the Night's Watch, one way or another

Robert burst out laughing "Bold ! You didn't even think about it!" Think about what ? It was either death or delayed death with probable freezing, but at least you'd still have a chance to live one more day.

Arthur finally looked down at his parents' heads again.

Then back at the king "Dead men don't go anywhere. They can't make any more choices, nor walk or live. I'd prefer to take my chances"

One way or another, maybe not now but in few years, he'll find a way to set himself free and work around the world with no worry of his parents or that stupid watch vow he'd had to take soon.

If he, somehow, survived that is.

Robert raised his goblet "Fair enough" after he ordered his cupbearer to bring him more and took a sip from it as he gestured him to go and he obeyed, bowing quickly as he exited the room.

"I will see that he travels with the next group heading north" Ned said before he followed him as the door closed, he turned to him with a kinder tone that he'd expect from him "One of my son, Jon Snow, will be taking his vow too so I'll make sure you'll go together" He informed as Arthur nodded in obedience

Ned took his shoulders in his hand as he looked at him pleadingly "You protected one of my younger son, Bran, and for that I still owe you a debt for the North always remembers" Ned said as he took a deep breath before looking at him with seriousness "Protect him, Jon, protect him and I – and the Stark's House shall owe you 2 life debts"

Owing a life debt was one of the greatest honours you could have – 2 was impressive, for he and the Stark's family were now linked together

It also answered why the man didn't free him from the Watch earlier to pay his life debt, as he needed him to take care for another one of his inconscient little brat.

Who in their right man would voluntarily become a foot soldier in that dead area with fabled strange monsters and Wildlings littering the other side of the wall ?

"Of course my Lord" He said with a sweet smile that hide his true thoughts and intentions as Eddard Stark – Ned for short, nodded and got back to the room as Arthur made his way out of here as fast as possible.

Cold.

That was the first thing Arthur noticed.

Cold wind bit through his rough black cloak as if it were made of paper. Snow drifted across the yard of Castle Black, gathering in thin white sheets against the walls and training dummies. The Wall loomed above everything like a frozen god – a silent, endless, and cruel one.

Arthur exhaled slowly. White mist left his lips.

'So this is how it begins' He though lamentedly as he walked with the others

A few weeks ago, he had been nothing more than the son of a whore and a thief in Winterfell. No name worth remembering. No coin. No future.

As they finally arrived in the castle, waiting in the middle of the open area, Jon Snow stood on his right, dark hair dusted with snow, face calm but distant. He looked like he belonged somewhere else and was slightly regretting his decision. A feeling that Arthur understood all that well.

Jon glanced toward him briefly as he acknowledged his presence "Arthur, was it ?" He grunted in acknowledgement "Sorry for your loss"

"Don't be" Replied Arthur as he swiftly activated his devil eyes to look around, memorizing faces littering on the marbled cobblestones as he deactivated before looking at the man in the eye and reached for his hand "Jon Snow, I presume" He said mockingly as they both knew he was well aware of who he was

"You presume well" Joked Jon as he accepted the handshake and Arthur chuckled. They sat in a comfortable silence as they waited for the Commander to arrive.

The silence was broke when, after 10 minutes of waiting and seeing other people whispering to each other, he decided to ask a question that tormented him

"Why are you here, Jon Snow ?" He wondered aloud as he looked at him with an intrigued expression

"My uncle's a man of the Night's Watch and I want to fight alongside him to –" Before Arthur cut him off

"No, I mean, whatever reason you have to come here is not my concern" He said slowly as he looked at the confused teen dead in the eye "I mean as in, why would you come here, when War is coming to Winterfell's doorstep soon enough?"

"What ? What do you mean ?" Asked a confused Jon "How can you say that ? Do you have any claim of this ?"

He looked at Jon as if he'd grown a second hand before shaking his head and deciding that he'd give a bit of his wisdom to the man

"Not really" He started and before Jon could protest, he continued "But any half-witted man with a vision can deduce that fact" Mocked gently Arthur as Jon shoved him to his shoulder

"I mean, the betrothal between your sister and that Lannister boy was cancelled yet your father decided to become the King's Hand and accompany him to King's Landing – alone. The Lannisters are furious of course for my parents trying to steal from their wagons and your father protected me openly –" There was also the accident with Bran of course, but he'd won't reveal it just like that especially if the mother of said kid decided that it'd be wiser to stay silent.

"And eventually, if not careful, the Queen will probably try to kill your father – just like the previous Hand who died recently, starting a war when your brother Robb would hear about this. At least they won't have your sister – or worse, all your family, as captives to negotiate the terms but here is your war"

Jon's eyes widened as the realization dawned on him and before he could continue, Ser Alliser started his speech.

As he droned on about the Night's Watch rules and all that sap, he decided to plant one last seed inside of the boy's mind, only talking loud enough for him to hear "As long as you don't make the vow, you're free to go" He said as Jon's eyes widened "– since you're here by your own resolve like you claim, not like I do" He added sadly in the end as he continued "I would kill for the possibility of going the hell out of this shithole, so take the time to consider what I said and – if you're smart enough, get out before it's too late, join your family again and help your brother in the war incoming"

Jon looked at him, trying to seize him as he asked "Why are you telling me all this ? What's in it for you ?"

Before he could replayed, he was stopped by Ser Alliser's voice coming louder.

"You are no longer boys," he barked. "You are no longer criminals. You are now brothers of the Night's Watch."

His lip curled slightly.

"Or you will be… if you survive."

Several recruits swallowed nervously.

Arthur didn't react.

He'd survived worse than cold and harsh words.

Ser Alliser continued pacing.

"You will train. You will fight. You will bleed. And if you fail…" He gestured toward the massive ice wall behind them. "The Wall has no use for weak men."

"So, prepare yourself, for the hardest 10 next week of your life !" As everyone cheered, people started to separate as instructions were given left and right.

They were both instructed to go and clean the kitchen, paired up together probably because of Ned's request, which he was glad for. Jon may be a bastard, but he was the bastard son of the King In The North still. His blood was royal, and royalty was everything in this world.

"Because your father asked me to protect you" He said simply as Jon's eyes widened "I saved one of his sons so he asked me to do the same for another one of his cub" He finished with a reference of the Stark's Sigil, the Wolf

"Still, doesn't explain why you would tell me all of that" He replied as Arthur chuckled whilst taking one of the many sponges laying around and start scrubbing one of the table

"Well, if you're not here to protect, safe in your castle, then I would've succeeded in my quest, wouldn't I?" He explained sassily as Jon chuckled, taking one of the broom as he started to clean the floor "Plus the Stark Family owes me a debt for saving your brother, and saving you will give me another one, which I hope will help me get out of this hellhole too" He finished as Jon chuckled

"You're a man one" Jon bitted back as Arthur nodded with a smark

"Aren't we all ?" He asked rhetorically as he looked at the now cleanier table, nodding to himself as if to say it was good enough before he looked at the Stark boy again "This place is for the worse of people" He explained as Jon's stilled "The rapers, the killers, the dishonoured. It's a punishment, forced to die in the cold protecting that huge wall, taking no wife to ensure you can't reproduce. That's why I was confused when your father told me you'd be here"

"I-I but I thought – my uncle –" Started Jon but Arthur cut him

"Whatever your uncle did, or did not, maybe he just volunteered like you did, is not my concern. What I'm saying is, whatever you reason you have to stay here, Jon Snow, it's probably not a good one, and if I was you, I'd be going the hell out of here before it's too late"

He stayed silent, letting the bastard heir of the North think about what he said before adding one last thing "Think Jon Snow, think. You still have a few weeks before deciding but if I was you I'd won't hesitate" He said as he looked at him with a smile "Well at least you'd make great company whilst we freeze our balls here so maybe you should stay" as Jon shoved him jokingly and they stayed in silent for the rest of their chore.

He could see his plan working, for it opened an option that the boy didn't even contemplate before but now that he put the whole image in perspective, it did look like a petty decision from a broody and whiny boy, going here.

At least he'd hoped that he'd get the hell out of here for various reasons. One, if he succeeded in saving that ignorant boy from dying a painful death whilst defending a stupid ice wall, he'd be allowed to go along with him and get the hell out of here and maybe have an important role in the future army that they'd gather against the Lannisters and then used the knowledge on who pushed Bran from the tower to his advantage.

If he did get out but Arthur was not allowed to go with him, then he'd just grow stronger here, with Jon not here he'll have a better chance to become the Lord Commander if he shows potential, and then get out of here by decreeing himself free from his watch and give the role to someone else.

If not, if he somehow stayed here, he'll have a powerful ally to make his life better and he'd be able to copy all the movements and techniques he'd learn by being well trained.
