The encrypted call came at 4 AM, Olivia's handle flashing with an urgency marker William had never seen her use before.
"We have a problem."
Her voice was tight, controlled, but carrying an undertone of genuine alarm. Olivia didn't alarm easily. Whatever she'd found was serious.
"Tell me."
"47's investigation traced the Sapienza Wing C biometric access. Dr. Emilia Rossi's credentials—the ones you used to get into the Ether lab."
William's stomach tightened. Sapienza had been almost a year ago, one of his earliest operations. The identity he'd assumed for that infiltration had been discarded immediately afterward, the credentials abandoned, the cover story left to rot.
"Rossi disappeared," Olivia continued. "But 47 found the trail. The forged documents she used to vanish—the documents that gave her a new identity and a new life. He traced them to a forger in Hamburg."
[THREAT ASSESSMENT: Escalating]
[VOSS: Hamburg forger, created William Green documentation (Ch. 4)]
[STATUS: Compromised]
"Voss."
"Voss." Olivia's confirmation was flat. "He broke. Under pressure from 47's investigation, he revealed the name on the primary identity he forged for the man who arranged Rossi's disappearance."
The silence stretched for three heartbeats.
"William Green," William said.
"William Green. British passport. Security consultant. The same name on every cover story you've used for nine months."
[IDENTITY STATUS: William Green]
[ASSESSMENT: BURNED]
[47 NOW HAS: Name, face (passport photo), professional history, operational pattern]
[EXPOSURE LEVEL: Critical]
The Professional processed the damage automatically. Every contact made as William Green was compromised. Every cover story, every professional relationship, every handshake and business card. Providence knew him as William Green. The intelligence community contacts he'd cultivated knew him as William Green. The entire architecture of his operational life was built on a name that 47 now possessed.
"How long ago?"
"Voss broke forty-eight hours ago. 47 has had your name for two days." Olivia's voice carried something that might have been guilt. "I found out through secondary channels. The ICA's internal communications are harder to penetrate than they used to be."
[TIMELINE: 47 has had identity for 48 hours]
[INVESTIGATIVE ACTIONS: Unknown]
[PROBABILITY OF CROSS-REFERENCING: High]
[ESTIMATED TIME UNTIL FULL PROFILE: 1-2 weeks]
"You need to disappear."
Olivia's voice was steady now, the alarm replaced by operational focus. "I can scrub the digital trail—remove the obvious connections, plant false leads, create noise in the system. It won't stop 47 permanently, but it should buy you maybe two weeks before the ICA cross-references everything and builds a complete picture."
William processed the offer. Olivia was proposing to actively interfere with an ICA investigation, to protect a man whose full agenda she still didn't know, from an organization she had reason to respect.
"Why?"
The question came out before the Professional could stop it. Olivia had no strategic reason to help him. She gained nothing from his survival that she couldn't gain from his elimination. If anything, his death would simplify her own situation—one less variable in her Shadow Client operations.
"Because whatever you are, you're not the worst thing I've found in these files." Her voice carried something that sounded almost like conviction. "Not by a long shot."
[OLIVIA HALL: Relationship analysis]
[ACTION: Offering protection without strategic obligation]
[MOTIVATION: Unknown (personal assessment of William's relative moral standing?)]
[IMPLICATION: She has made a choice about William that is not purely transactional]
"The ICA has killed thousands of people for money," Olivia continued. "Providence has shaped history through murder and manipulation for decades. The people you've worked against, the targets you've eliminated—they're not innocent victims. And you... you could have let me die in dozens of ways by now. Could have sold me out to Providence or the ICA or anyone else who'd pay."
"I considered it."
"I know." A pause. "You didn't do it. That's the point."
She hung up before William could respond.
The safehouse was dark, the Lisbon harbor visible through windows that suddenly felt too exposed.
[STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT: Post-identity burn]
[OPTION 1: Full extraction via Identity Fabrication]
[REQUIREMENT: New identity, severed connections, rebuilt operational base]
[TIME: 2-4 weeks minimum]
[RISK: High transition vulnerability]
[OPTION 2: Providence protection]
[REQUIREMENT: Disclosure of threat level, request for organizational support]
[RISK: Providence may view burned asset as liability rather than investment]
[OPTION 3: Preemptive strike on 47]
[ASSESSMENT: Not recommended. Direct confrontation with 47 remains high-risk (15-20% survival probability)]
[OPTION 4: Diana contact for negotiation]
[ASSESSMENT: Extreme risk. Diana's investment in UNKNOWN-7 investigation makes negotiation unlikely.]
None of the options were good. All of them carried costs that William wasn't sure he could afford. But that had been true since Copenhagen, since the first kill, since he'd woken up in a dead man's body with a system that wanted to make him into something else.
[OBSERVATION: User is processing tactical options]
[COUNTER-OBSERVATION: User is also processing Olivia's choice]
[SHE CHOSE YOU. WITHOUT MANIPULATION. WITHOUT STRATEGIC CALCULUS.]
[THAT IS RARE. THAT IS VALUABLE. THAT IS DANGEROUS.]
The Watcher's commentary was accurate. Olivia had made a choice about William that wasn't transactional—she'd decided he was worth protecting based on some internal assessment of who he was versus who he could have been. The mask hadn't earned that. The manipulation hadn't earned that.
The man underneath had earned it, somehow, through choices he couldn't quite identify.
"I don't know what to do with a gift that wasn't strategic."
[LEARN. OR DON'T. EITHER WAY, SHE'S NOW CONNECTED TO A BURNED IDENTITY.]
[HER CHOICE TO PROTECT YOU PUTS HER AT RISK FROM 47'S INVESTIGATION.]
[THE SYSTEM WAS CORRECT ABOUT HER BEING A VULNERABILITY.]
[IT WAS ALSO CORRECT THAT VULNERABILITIES CAN BE STRENGTHS.]
William Green.
The name he'd chosen in a Hamburg forgery shop because it was his mother's maiden name—one of the few things from his old life he'd wanted to carry into this one. The name on every passport, every business card, every professional interaction for nine months. The name that had built a reputation, cultivated relationships, created the infrastructure that let him operate at the level he now occupied.
Dead now.
Like Carl Engström, the body he'd inherited. Like the corporate strategist who'd died in a life that felt increasingly distant. Like the saffron memory that wouldn't surface no matter how hard he tried to recall it. Everything from before was fading, dissolving, replaced by something harder and colder.
[IDENTITY FABRICATION: Available]
[CAPABILITY: Create new deep-cover identity]
[RECOMMENDATION: Initiate immediately]
[SYSTEM SUGGESTION: New identity parameters available. Select or customize.]
The system offered suggestions—names, nationalities, professional backgrounds optimized for his operational requirements. Efficient identities designed to maximize capability and minimize exposure.
William ignored them.
Some things you still chose for yourself.
He pulled out a notebook—actual paper, untraceable—and began writing. The new identity would need to be completely separate from William Green. Different nationality, different professional background, different operational patterns. Everything that 47 knew about William Green would need to become a dead end.
The work took hours. When he finally set down the pen, the harbor outside was bright with morning light.
[NEW IDENTITY: Parameters established (User-defined)]
[IMPLEMENTATION: Pending]
[NOTE: Olivia's digital scrub provides 2-week window for transition]
The William Green who'd climbed from Copenhagen's desperate survival to Budapest's clinical efficiency was gone. The name was burned. The contacts were compromised. The entire operational architecture was dust.
But somewhere in the wreckage, one person had chosen him without being asked.
[STATUS: Identity burned, capabilities elevated, relationships evolved]
[HUMANITY: 48 (below midpoint, Hollow approaching)]
[47: Hunting with full identification]
[OLIVIA: Protecting without obligation]
[THE FALL BEGINS.]
The Watcher's final notification pulsed in crimson at the edge of William's vision. Not a warning. Not advice. Just observation from something that had been watching since the beginning and would be watching until the end.
Whatever that end looked like.
William closed his eyes and began planning his resurrection.
