Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Cafeteria Conspiracies

Chapter 8: Cafeteria Conspiracies

The cafeteria was chaos incarnate.

Tables filled with students, trays clattering, voices overlapping. A faint smell of fried food lingered in the air. Bright fluorescent lights buzzed gently above.

Tae Kook navigated the crowded space with ease. His eyes scanned the room, methodical, calm. Not because he liked chaos, but because he always noticed things. Always.

And there she was—Han Soo Min.

Sitting at the far side of the cafeteria, tray neatly arranged in front of her, quietly eating. No friends. No chatter. Just the calm presence that had slowly become the center of his attention.

Tae Kook's fingers tightened slightly around the strap of his bag. He hadn't expected to care this much about… someone else's lunch routine.

"…Focus," he muttered under his breath, as if scolding himself.

Then—

"KOOKY!"

The voice, predictably, belonged to Yoo Min Ho.

Tae Kook groaned. Min Ho waved from across the room, tray in hand, smirking.

"Come on, man! Don't just stare at her the whole time. Let's sit together!"

"…I'm not staring," Tae Kook said flatly.

"Oh, totally not. Sure, sure." Min Ho wiggled his eyebrows. "Anyway, it's lunch. We can plot, plan, and maybe—just maybe—get you to talk to her."

Tae Kook didn't reply. He only exhaled and followed.

Ae Rin, crouched behind a pillar near the drinks station, scribbled furiously in her notebook.

"…Observation 71: Kooky still panicking internally," she whispered. "…Observation 72: Min Ho is a human disaster." She paused. "…Observation 73: This will be good."

Min Ho dragged Tae Kook to a nearby table.

"Sit here. Perfect spot." He plopped down and gestured with exaggerated flair. "Now, you're close enough to see her without actually looking like a weirdo. Genius, right?"

"…Annoying," Tae Kook muttered.

"Oh, I know," Min Ho said, grinning. "And that's why I'm your friend."

Tae Kook reluctantly sat. He glanced at Han Soo Min, noticing her still eating quietly, methodically. Every bite measured. Every motion calm.

"…She notices everything," he thought. "…Or maybe nothing at all."

Min Ho, never subtle, nudged him.

"So, Kooky, what's the plan? You're going to… smile at her? Wave? Or maybe—" He paused dramatically. "Say hi?"

"…No," Tae Kook said, tone flat.

Min Ho smirked. "Exactly what I thought. Classic Kooky. Too serious."

Meanwhile, Ae Rin had moved slightly closer, crouched behind a low wall.

"…Observation 74: He's considering talking. Or not. Must watch." She giggled softly. "…Observation 75: Soo Min still oblivious… or pretending?"

Then, unexpectedly—

Han Soo Min looked up. Straight at him.

For a moment, time seemed to stretch. The cafeteria noise became background static.

"…Kim Tae Kook," she said softly, almost a whisper.

"…Han Soo Min," he replied, equally soft.

No one else noticed. Everyone else talked, ate, and laughed.

Min Ho leaned back, pretending not to watch but clearly enjoying every second.

"OOOH! This is tense," he whispered loudly. "Kooky can't handle it."

"…Shut up," Tae Kook muttered under his breath, eyes still on her.

Han Soo Min tilted her head slightly. "…Do you always sit over there?"

"…Sometimes," he said carefully. "…Depends."

She nodded, satisfied with the answer. Then returned to her food, calm as ever.

Min Ho leaned forward. "You could at least ask her about the metallic thing. You know—the pen? The one she returned?"

"…Not now," Tae Kook said. "…Not here."

Ae Rin, scribbling furiously, whispered with glee:

"…Observation 76: Kooky internally screaming. Observation 77: He actually cares more than he admits. Observation 78: Min Ho is useless."

A long silence stretched between Tae Kook and Han Soo Min. Not awkward. Not tense. Just… heavy with unspoken awareness.

Tae Kook's mind raced.

"…She's calm. Too calm. She notices things. She doesn't react. Dangerous."

But he also felt something strange, unfamiliar—a pull he couldn't explain.

Then, Min Ho clapped loudly beside him.

"Alright! Enough staring! Let's eat before the lunch period ends. And Kooky, I swear if you don't say something to her soon, I'm doing it for you!"

Tae Kook's jaw tightened. "…Do not—"

But Min Ho already stood up and sauntered toward Han Soo Min's table, waving exaggeratedly.

"…Hey! Soo Min!" Min Ho shouted. "You're ignoring Kooky! Say hi!"

The cafeteria seemed to pause for a heartbeat. Heads turned slightly. Some students whispered.

Tae Kook froze. His mind screamed.

Ae Rin's voice echoed in his imagination:

"…Observation 79: Panic imminent. Observation 80: Comedy gold."

Han Soo Min didn't flinch. She looked up calmly, almost amused. "…Hello," she said softly, without a trace of irritation.

Min Ho gave a triumphant grin and returned to his seat, flopping down beside Tae Kook.

"…See? Easy," he whispered.

Tae Kook exhaled slowly. "…She's dangerous."

"…I'll say," Min Ho whispered back. "And somehow… you like it."

Tae Kook didn't respond. He only glanced at her, quietly, carefully.

Ae Rin scribbled one final note:

"…Observation 81: Kooky officially in trouble. Observation 82: Lunch break ends soon. Observation 83: This is only the beginning."

And as the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, Tae Kook realized something he hadn't before:

This… this small, quiet girl had already disrupted the calm, controlled world he had built around himself.

And he couldn't stop noticing.
