Chapter 2 - The First Monster

The air was thick with the metallic scent of blood and fear. Every scream echoed like a chaotic metronome, yet Adrián Veyra moved calmly among the fleeing bodies, his eyes fixed on one goal: observe and calculate. While everyone else scattered in panic, he noticed patterns.

The Flesh Devourer from before moved strangely it wasn't completely random. It targeted the slowest and seemed to prioritize those whose fear was visible in their movements. Every breath, every blink, every hesitation was readable to someone with a mind as sharp as Adrián's.

He pulled a small knife from his backpack. It wasn't enough to seriously injure the monster, but it could create a distraction. He held it steadily, calculating the exact distance to his target: three meters, five steps, one second. Precision was his weapon.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Creature Detected: Flesh Devourer. Level: 2

Estimated Threat: Moderate

Around him, players screamed and shoved each other. Chaos reigned. Adrián felt no fear; he felt opportunity. In one fluid motion, he threw the knife. It grazed the monster's shoulder. The Flesh Devourer turned, but its reaction wasn't fast enough. Adrián stepped back, measuring every second, every distance.

Then he noticed something worse: another player had appeared, wielding a firearm. Bullets flew indiscriminately, each one altering the monster's path. The chaos wasn't natural it was manipulated by desperate players.

[HIDDEN SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Variable Detected. Player may exploit environmental chaos.

A faint smile appeared on Adrián's lips. While others were panicking and killing indiscriminately, he could exploit the confusion to his advantage. Chaos was an ally; fear was a tool.

The monster lunged toward a group of unaware players. Adrián stepped toward them not to save them, but to guide the Flesh Devourer toward the strongest. He calculated that within seconds, the apparent leaders would fall first, revealing the weaknesses of each player.

A bloodcurdling scream filled the street as the first victim fell. Some ran in all directions, but Adrián saw the pattern: the terrified were predictable. The system's first rule was clear: instinct ruled, and only the calculated survived.

A second monster appeared suddenly from a side alley. Even the boldest players flinched. Adrián didn't move. His mind was running simulations and probabilities. Two monsters meant double chaos, double opportunity.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

New Quest: Survive the Flesh Devourer for 10 minutes. Reward: 200 XP

Players panicked immediately. Some tried to fight, others ran blindly. Adrián noticed something else: the second monster wasn't identical to the first. Faster. Smarter. This wasn't coincidence the system was adjusting parameters in real-time, testing player reactions.

Adrián used the environment to his advantage overturned cars, rubble, cracked walls. Every obstacle could slow or confuse a monster, but he had to calculate the exact trajectory of every nearby player. One wrong step could mean instant death.

Amid the chaos, Adrián noticed a small group moving with precision: three players wielding improvised weapons, appearing organized. Most players were blinded by fear, but this group showed tactical awareness. Allies or competitors.

He decided to test them. A small stone tossed near them caused one to overreact, raising a weapon unnecessarily. Valuable information. Who was reactive, who could be manipulated.

[HIDDEN SYSTEM MESSAGE]

New Opportunity: Manipulate player group. Reward: Unknown Skill

Adrián moved fluidly, never in straight lines, always calculating angles, distances, and reaction times. Every second mattered. He noticed the strongest players instinctively positioning themselves for combat, ignoring the real danger: the monsters. The first lesson was clear: the system rewarded players who thought faster than others and punished the impulsive.

The first monster lunged at another cluster of players. Adrián acted, throwing his knife not to harm, but to alter the monster's trajectory, pushing it toward the most confident player. The victim fell. Chaos intensified.

Then Adrián saw a faint blue flash in his vision, barely noticeable to anyone else a hidden system message.

[HIDDEN SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Player Identified. Variable Detected.

Someone inside the system was watching him. Not a monster. Not a normal player. An entity controlling the event. Adrián realized immediately: survival wasn't just about monsters or other players it was about the system itself.

With this knowledge, Adrián began planning his long-term strategy. If the system was observing, every move had to be precise. He could allow other players to survive… or use their desperation to advance his own position.

The second monster closed in. Adrián jumped onto a pile of rubble, spinning, calculating distance, speed, angles. Every second counted. The monster accelerated, targeting the panicked players. Adrián's advantage wasn't physical it was mental.

Minutes passed. Adrián gathered information about every player, every monster, every system pattern. First lesson: monsters were obstacles, humans were more dangerous. Survival didn't rely on strength it relied on manipulating the situation.

Remaining players began grouping instinctively. Adrián smiled faintly: every decision they made was predictable. One by one, impulsive players fell, revealing their weaknesses.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Reward Granted: 150 XP

Adrián felt a thrill, not fear. Each XP reflected progress, and his ability to exploit the system. Every small mistake from the others was another step ahead.

The first battle ended, but the ruined city was now filled with terrified, injured players. Monsters were partially controlled by Adrián's manipulation, but the real test hadn't started yet.

A new, intense blue line appeared before him:

[SYSTEM WARNING]

Unauthorized exploitation detected. Variable engaged.

The system had detected him using extreme strategy. This wasn't a survival test it was a psychological experiment in real time.

Adrián stayed still for a moment, breathing calmly. Chaos continued. Players killed each other. Monsters hunted the slow.

But his mind raced faster than any physical action. He knew the system had activated an observer, and the next round wouldn't just test combat. It would test intelligence and strategy, something only he could survive.

He glanced at the surviving players. Each one was a piece on his chessboard. Each monster, a pawn. The ruined city, the board itself.

Cliffhanger:

A distant roar shook the buildings. The system emitted an unknown alert, and a new blue window blinked in his vision:

[NEW THREAT DETECTED: LEVEL 5 MONSTER APPROACHING. TIME TO STRATEGIZE.]

Adrián smiled openly for the first time. This wasn't survival… this was mind games and power at its peak.
