Chapter 24 - CHAPTER 24: The Contest

## CHAPTER 24: The Contest

The late afternoon sun hung low in the sky, casting long, bruised shadows across the stone courtyard of Aethelgard. The air was thick with humidity and the electric hum of nervous mana. Hundreds of students, dressed in their sleek, reinforced activity gear, stood in disciplined rows before a towering obsidian podium.

From this height, the Headmistress—a woman whose presence felt like an approaching storm—and Master Grey looked down upon the sea of youth. Behind the podium lay the gateway to the "Mini-Sector," a massive, sprawling expanse of ancient timber and dense undergrowth that served as the academy's primary testing ground. It was a labyrinth of shadows, a contained wilderness where the rules of the civilized world were suspended.

Master Grey stepped forward, her hands clasped behind her back. Her eyes, sharp and predatory, scanned the crowd. The dark ash-blue tint of Caspian's hair caught the light near the front, making her grin widen just a fraction.

*Murmurs* rippled through the ranks as students exchanged frantic whispers and checked the seals on their equipment.

"**Listen up, everyone!**"

Master Grey's voice didn't just carry; it commanded. The sound sliced through the chatter, leaving a vacuum of silence in its wake. Every gaze snapped to the podium.

"You have all paired yourselves into groups of four," she announced, her voice echoing off the surrounding stone walls. "The rules of this exhibition are simple." She paused, letting the weight of the moment sink in. "The first team to make it to the other side wins."

The silence broke into a fresh wave of murmurs. A simple race? In Aethelgard? No one believed it.

"Quiet!" Grey barked, and the silence returned, heavier than before. "You will not just be running a race. Deep within this forest, at four distinct checkpoints, we have placed sanctified pedestals. You are to collect a specific colored stone from each part as you progress. The first team to collect all four and emerge on the far side by dawn tomorrow... wins."

She leaned over the railing, her face illuminated by the dying orange light. "But be warned: this environment has been specifically cultivated to sustain unique and hungry creatures. They are as much a part of the curriculum as I am. You may leave now."

The crowd erupted into motion. Groups began to huddle, pointing at maps and checking compasses. Amidst the chaos, the 4 out of the 5 Commoneers found a brief moment to stand together one last time before the test began.

Zerav adjusted the straps of his heavy pack, his movements mechanical and precise. Beside him leaned a weapon that had caused a scandal when it arrived at the academy gates: a massive, obsidian-bladed scythe. The Headmistress herself had authorized its use, recognizing that Zerav's talents in its use. He shouldered the weapon with practiced ease, the curved blade gleaming with a cold, dark light.

"See you on the other side," Zerav said. A rare, devilish grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. He didn't wait for a reply; he turned and vanished into the crowd toward his assigned noble team.

Louisa watched him go, a soft, knowing smile on her face. She turned to Silas, who stood shrouded in his usual grey hoodie. The boy was a shadow among shadows.

"Be sure to have some fun, okay?" Louisa said, her voice warm, acting as the emotional anchor she always was.

"As if that's exactly what I'm here to do," Silas replied. His voice was low, but there was a sharp, rhythmic tapping of his fingers against his wooden sword hilt that suggested his fun would be terrifying to witness. He offered a curt nod and drifted away toward the group waiting on him.

Louisa then turned her attention to Edna, who was frantically re-organizing the pouches on her belt, checking her flint, her bandages, and her tactical wire.

"Be sure not to get into trouble, okay?" Louisa said, her tone shifting to that of an overprotective mother.

Edna snapped her last pouch shut and threw her bag over her shoulders, her eyes bright with a mischievous light. "When have I EVER gotten into trouble, Lou?"

Louisa raised a single, skeptical eyebrow. "The fire in the capital? The incident with the Governor's carriage? Should I continue?"

Edna laughed, a bright, melodic sound that seemed out of place in the grim courtyard. "Details! That was all in the name of progress."

"Hey, Coomoner Hurry up! Don't hold us back before we even start!"

A sharp, feminine voice cut through their conversation. Louisa looked up to see her assigned teammates.

"Oh, gotta go," Louisa said, giving Edna a quick squeeze of the shoulder.

"Don't over-exert yourself!" Edna yelled after her as Louisa jogged away to join the nobles.

"I won't!" Louisa called back, though the way her hand instinctively went to the concealed daggers at her waist suggested she intended to do exactly the opposite.

### The Midnight Sky

Caspian Vane watched his family scatter. His dark ash-blue hair, appearing almost black in the soft light of the afternoon, moved slightly in the rising wind. He felt the weight of the responsibility—the invisible thread that connected them all.

"Caspian? Are you ready?"

He turned to see Lyra Valerius standing with Elisa and Casel. Lyra looked regal in her red gear, her white eyes glowing faintly as she tapped into her mana-reserve. Elisa was tucked safely between them, her hood up, her eyes wide as she stared at the dark maw of the forest.

"I'm ready," Caspian said. He looked at the three of them—a Royal, a shy girl with hidden depths, and a jokester who was Stronger than he looked. It was an impossible team, but as he looked at the treeline, he knew it was the only one he wanted.

Nearby, Lily Cleve was being ushered toward the gate by her own class. She spotted Caspian and blew him a theatrical kiss. "Don't trip over any roots, Vane! I want to see that face in one piece tomorrow!"

Caspian chuckled, waving back with an easy, effortless charm that infuriated the noble boys nearby.

"Let's move," Caspian commanded, his voice dropping into the tone of the leader they needed. "The stones aren't going to collect themselves, and I have a feeling the unique creatures Master Grey mentioned are already waiting for us to step into the dark."

"I have creepy crawlies" Elisa's cute voice chimed in.

As the various groups crossed the threshold and ventured into the forest, taking the path assigned to them as the contest finally began.
