Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Vow That Outlives Time

Days turned into months, and months melted into years.

The small wooden hut beside Zi Yu's tomb stood firm through wind and rain, a quiet symbol of a love that no force on earth could shake. Han Zhong never strayed far, not even for a single day. He tended the grass around the tomb, wiped the dust from the stone, and spoke to Zi Yu as if she were right there beside him, even in the bright daylight when her ghostly form could not appear.

He grew older slowly, his back bending a little with time, his steps growing softer, but his eyes never lost the warm, devoted light that only came when he spoke of her. The villagers no longer questioned his choice; they respected him, even admired him, for a loyalty that was rare in the mortal world.

They would stop by occasionally, leaving fresh fruit or warm bread on his small wooden table, and they never spoke of leaving or moving on. They knew better than to break the quiet peace he had built beside the tomb.

Zi Yu watched over him every single night, her pale figure floating gently beside him as he slept, her cold hand brushing back his graying hair with endless tenderness. She still felt the weight of guilt, for she knew he had given up his whole life to stay with a spirit, but she could not deny the joy that filled her ghostly heart when he smiled at her, when he held her hand, when he whispered that he had no regrets.

She had kept her promise.

She never left.

On quiet evenings, when the moon was full and the stars shone bright above the ancient trees, they would sit together on the soft grass, just as they had done for so many years. They no longer spoke of sorrow or regret, nor of the life they had lost. Instead, they talked of the quiet moments that made their bond unbreakable: the first time they had met in the palace garden, the secret letters they had exchanged, the quiet vow they had made under the same moon that now watched over them.

"I do not fear death anymore," Han Zhong said one night, his voice soft and calm, no longer filled with the desperation of his younger years. He looked at Zi Yu, his eyes gentle and full of peace, and reached for her hand, his fingers curling around her cool, transparent palm.

"I used to fear leaving you alone," he continued, his gaze fixed on the moon above. "But now I know you will be waiting. I know we will be together again, not as a mortal and a ghost, but as two souls, free from all pain and separation."

Zi Yu's eyes softened, a warm, tearless smile touching her pale lips. She had waited for this moment for years, for the day when he would accept his mortal fate without fear, when he would understand that their love was not limited to one short lifetime.

"I will be waiting," she said firmly, her voice steady and full of unshakable faith. "No matter how long it takes, no matter how far I must go, I will wait for you at the gate of the underworld. I will not move, I will not leave, until I see your face again."

Han Zhong leaned his head gently on her shoulder, a quiet, peaceful sigh escaping his lips. For the first time in years, he felt no sadness, no longing, only complete and total contentment.

He had lived his life exactly as he wanted to: loyal to the woman he loved, faithful to his promise, and devoted to a love that had conquered death itself.

The wind blew softly through the trees, carrying the faint scent of wildflowers, and the moon cast a silver glow over the two figures, one mortal, one ghost, bound together by a vow stronger than life.

Their story was not one of tragedy, but of eternal love.

A love that would not fade with time, that would not break with death, that would live on forever, in every lifetime, in every world.

And as long as the moon rose and the stars shone, their love would never be forgotten.
