Rain fell from the dark sky in thick, endless sheets.
It hit the stone ground, the wooden posts, the iron chains, and the hundreds of faces gathered around the execution platform. The sound of the rain mixed with the noise of the crowd, but it could not drown out their voices.
"Kill him!"
"Traitor!"
"Kael Veyron deserves death!"
Kael stood in the center of the platform with his hands tied behind him and his clothes soaked through. Blood ran down the side of his face and dripped from his chin. A deep wound cut across his chest, and every breath hurt. His legs shook, but he refused to fall.
He kept his back straight.
He would not bow.
Not here.
Not in front of them.
Above him, on the highest platform, stood the people who had once called him friend.
Aric Blackwell.
Lena Mora.
Darian Holt.
Three of the strongest young warriors in the kingdom.
Three people Kael had trusted with his life.
Now they stood there in clean armor, dry beneath the shelter above them, watching him like he was something filthy on the ground.
Aric stepped forward and looked down at him with cold eyes.
"Kael Veyron," he said, his voice carrying through the rain, "you have been found guilty of betraying the kingdom, stealing forbidden techniques, and murdering your fellow soldiers."
A roar of approval came from the crowd.
Kael said nothing.
He simply looked at Aric.
The man frowned slightly. "Do you have anything to say before your sentence is carried out?"
Kael's mouth slowly curved upward.
It was not a smile born from joy.
It was a smile born from pain.
From anger.
From deep, burning hatred.
"You really did it," Kael said quietly.
His voice was rough, but clear enough to reach Aric.
Aric's expression did not change. "I don't know what you mean."
Kael laughed under his breath.
"I mean that you actually had the courage to stand there and lie to my face."
The crowd began shouting louder, but Kael ignored them. He only stared at Aric.
"Three years," Kael said. "Three years I fought beside you. Three years I trusted you. I saved your life more than once. I gave you every secret I knew. I never once suspected that the dagger would come from behind."
A flicker appeared in Aric's eyes. It was gone quickly, but Kael saw it.
Lena looked away.
Darian crossed his arms.
Aric spoke again in a calm voice. "Your words will not save you. Your crimes are too great."
"My crimes?" Kael repeated.
He looked at the crowd, at the nobles, at the officers, at the soldiers who had once respected him.
Then he looked back at Aric.
"I was the one who killed the demon general at Black Hollow."
"I was the one who sealed the north gate when your battalion ran."
"I was the one who fought the beast tide while you all hid behind walls."
His voice grew stronger with every word.
"And when the crown prince wanted someone to blame for the missing treasury, you all gave him my name."
The crowd went silent for a moment.
Even the rain seemed softer.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"You used me. Then you threw me away."
Aric did not answer.
That silence was answer enough.
Kael looked at the faces around him and finally understood.
No one here had come to see justice.
They had come to watch a convenient man die.
The kingdom needed a scapegoat.
And he had been chosen.
A bitter laugh escaped his throat.
"So this is what loyalty means," he said. "I should have known. Power always makes people ugly."
Aric's jaw tightened. "Enough. Begin the execution."
At his command, two guards stepped forward.
One held Kael in place.
The other raised a heavy blade that gleamed under the rain.
Kael looked up at the sky.
It was dark. Endless. Cold.
For a moment, he felt strangely calm.
He thought of his mother, who had died when he was young.
He thought of the first sword he ever held.
He thought of the battles he survived.
He thought of all the times he believed hard work would protect him.
He had been wrong.
The blade came down.
Kael closed his eyes.
And then pain exploded through his neck.
The world tilted.
His knees gave out.
His body collapsed to the floor.
The last thing he saw was Aric turning away as if Kael had never mattered at all.
Then darkness swallowed everything.
There was no sound.
No light.
No pain.
Just empty, endless darkness.
Kael floated inside it without a body, without breath, without a name. He did not know how long he stayed there. Seconds. Minutes. Maybe longer.
Then a strange voice spoke inside his mind.
[Host body destroyed.]
Kael's mind jolted.
[Searching for compatible soul.]
His thoughts stirred like a fire waking from ash.
Compatible soul?
What was this?
He tried to speak, but he had no mouth.
Then another line appeared before him, glowing in pale blue light.
[Compatible soul found.]
[System link established.]
Kael's chest tightened, though he no longer had a chest.
A system?
He had heard of such things only in old legends and ruined ruins, stories of ancient beings who granted impossible power. Most people believed those stories were myths.
But the voice in his mind felt too real to be a dream.
[Welcome, Host.]
[You have died.]
Kael froze.
Died?
So it was true.
He had been executed.
He had been killed by the people he trusted most.
A pulse of rage rushed through his mind so violently that the darkness around him seemed to shake.
Then another message appeared.
[Death condition reached.]
[Special reward unlocked.]
[Evolution System activated.]
Kael did not understand.
Reward?
Evolution?
What was this supposed to mean?
Before he could think more, the darkness shattered.
A blinding light struck his eyes.
Kael gasped and jerked upright.
He was not on the execution platform anymore.
He was lying on cold stone.
His body hurt, but not in the same way as before. The pain was dull and distant, like an echo. He slowly opened his eyes and saw a narrow room with cracked walls, a wooden table, a broken chair, and one small window covered by iron bars.
Moonlight spilled through the bars and lit the room in silver.
Kael blinked.
This was not the execution platform.
This was… a room?
He sat up too quickly and nearly fell over.
His hands were free.
He looked down.
No chains.
No blood-soaked clothes.
No beheading wound.
Instead, he saw a plain black shirt and rough gray trousers. His body felt lighter, but also weaker in some areas. He could still move. He could still breathe.
He lifted a hand and touched his neck.
Nothing.
No scar.
No wound.
Kael stared at the empty skin as his heart began to pound.
What was happening?
Then the voice returned.
[System successfully linked.]
[Current status will now be displayed.]
A glowing panel appeared in front of his eyes. Kael stiffened and nearly swung at it before realizing the strange shape was not physical. It hovered in the air like a ghostly screen.
He read it carefully.

Danger level remains high.
Grow stronger immediately.
Kael stared at the screen.
He did not understand everything, but he understood enough.
He was alive.
Somehow, impossibly, he had returned.
His fingers slowly curled into fists.
Saved state before death?
Did that mean he had been brought back to a point before his execution?
Or had time itself changed?
He did not know.
But he knew one thing with complete certainty.
He had been given a second chance.
And this time, he would not waste it.
Kael took a deep breath and forced himself to stay calm. He had learned long ago that panic solved nothing.
"System," he said quietly.
[Yes, Host.]
Kael's eyes narrowed. "What are you?"
A pause.
Then the voice answered.
[The Evolution System exists to help the host transcend limits.]
"Why me?"
[Compatibility unknown. Probability of survival low. Probability of growth high.]
Kael frowned.
That answer made little sense.
Still, he understood the important part.
The system had chosen him because he could survive with it. Or maybe because he was useful to it.
He did not care which.
As long as it gave him power.
His gaze moved around the room again. It was small and plain, but he noticed one thing he had missed before.
A sword stood in the corner.
Kael stood slowly and walked toward it.
The blade was simple, not special, but it was real. He picked it up and tested the weight. Light. Balanced. A beginner's weapon.
He could work with this.
Then a message appeared.
[Analysis skill activated.]
Kael focused on the sword.
Another panel opened.
Item: Iron Training Sword
Quality: Low
Durability: 73%
Use: Basic training weapon
Comment: Suitable for weak bodies. Could be improved with evolution material.
Kael's brows rose slightly.
"So that's how it works."
The system could analyze things.
He looked toward the door.
It was locked, but he could hear voices outside.
Men.
At least two of them.
Kael moved closer and listened.
"Did he really survive the poison?"
"I don't know. The captain said to keep watch until dawn."
"Just watch him. If he wakes up again, report it."
Kael's eyes narrowed.
Poison?
Someone had poisoned this body too?
He searched through the memories that belonged to this world, this body, and slowly pieces came together.
This was not the kingdom he had known before. It was the same world, but this body was younger, weaker, and currently hidden in a forgotten storage room beneath a noble estate. The original owner of this body had already been slowly killed with poison because he had discovered too much.
A poor young servant.
No name worth remembering.
No one had cared when he died.
Kael's expression darkened.
Even in this life, the weak were treated like dust.
He gripped the sword tightly.
Then another line appeared in the air.
[Tutorial Quest Available]
Quest: Survive the Night
Objective: Defeat the intruder sent to finish the job.
Reward: 1 Evolution Point
Failure: Death
Kael's eyes sharpened.
"So there is a real test."
A thin smile touched his lips.
Good.
That was better.
If the system wanted him to fight, then he would fight.
If it wanted him to grow, then he would grow.
And if this world wanted to bury him again, he would tear his way out of the grave.
A sudden sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone was coming.
Kael lowered his body and held the sword in both hands.
The door creaked open.
A man stepped inside.
He wore a dark hood and carried a short blade in one hand. His face was partly covered, but Kael could still see the cold look in his eyes.
The assassin stopped the moment he saw Kael standing there.
His gaze moved to the sword.
"You woke up?" he said.
Kael said nothing.
The assassin's expression changed. "No matter. You're already dead."
He rushed forward.
Fast.
But not faster than Kael's eyes.
Kael shifted to the side, just barely avoiding the first strike. The short blade sliced through empty air and hit the wall instead. Sparks flashed.
The assassin turned, surprised.
Kael did not give him time to recover.
He swung the sword with all his strength.
The iron blade struck the assassin's wrist.
Bones cracked.
The short blade fell to the floor.
The man shouted in pain and stumbled back.
Kael attacked again.
This time, the assassin managed to block, but Kael was stronger than his body should have been. The system had already changed him, even if only a little. His movement was crude, but sharp. His eyes tracked every motion.
The assassin backed away.
"What are you?" he hissed.
Kael advanced one step.
"I'm the one you should have killed properly."
The assassin's eyes widened.
Kael noticed a small pouch hanging from the man's belt.
Without hesitation, he lunged, kicked the man in the chest, and grabbed the pouch as the assassin slammed into the wall.
The man spat blood and tried to rise.
Kael opened the pouch and saw a small crystal inside, black as smoke.
Another message flashed in front of his eyes.
[Material detected: Shadow Crystal]
[Absorption possible.]
Kael looked at the crystal, then at the man on the floor.
The assassin saw the expression on Kael's face and panic entered his voice.
"No—wait—"
Kael did not wait.
He crushed the crystal in his hand.
A burst of dark energy rushed into his palm and raced up his arm like cold fire. His body shuddered. He clenched his teeth as the strange force spread through him.
Then the system spoke again.
[Absorption complete.]
[Gained 1 Evolution Point.]
[New skill fragment unlocked: Shadow Step (Incomplete)]
Kael's eyes widened slightly.
So this was it.
The path to growth.
Not just training.
Not just effort.
He could take power from what others carried.
The assassin looked horrified. "Impossible…"
Kael raised his sword.
"Tell me who sent you," he said.
The assassin shook his head wildly. "I can't—"
Kael stepped forward.
The man swallowed hard.
"Lord Varian," he said quickly. "It was Lord Varian. He wanted to make sure you died before sunrise."
Kael held still.
Varian.
That name did not mean much yet, but it would.
He would learn everything.
He would find every person involved.
And one by one, he would make them regret the day they touched him.
The assassin tried to crawl backward.
Kael's gaze turned cold.
"Wrong answer."
He struck once.
The assassin went still.
Silence returned to the room.
Kael stood over the body, breathing slowly. There was no fear in him now. No confusion. Only a sharp, burning feeling that filled his chest like fire.
He had died once.
He had been betrayed once.
That would never happen again.
The system screen opened one more time.
Quest Complete: Survive the Night
Reward: 1 Evolution Point received.
Evolution Options Available:
Enhance body strength
Improve speed and reaction
Unlock minor regeneration
Choose one.
Kael looked at the three choices.
Strength.
Speed.
Regeneration.
Each one was useful.
Each one mattered.
He thought about the assassin. About the future. About Aric's face when he had been executed. About all the people who believed he was already gone.
Kael's eyes hardened.
"The next time I stand in front of them," he whispered, "I will not be weak."
He raised his hand and made his choice.
The room filled with a dark glow.
And somewhere far away, in the noble estate above, a bell suddenly rang.
Someone had noticed the death.
Someone had realized that the prey had begun to fight back.
Kael smiled for the first time in his second life.
This time, he would evolve.
And this time, he would hunt.
