Chapter 2 - The awakening

The morning sun cut through the ruins of the old city like shards of glass. Kael Varyn walked along the cracked streets toward the massive Ascendant training arena, his heartbeat hammering in his chest. Today wasn't just any day—it was the day that would decide his life. One hour, one awakening ceremony, one chance to step into the world of the powerful… or remain powerless forever.

Around him, dozens of other fifteen-year-olds murmured nervously. Some tried to look confident, some whispered prayers, and a few even sparred casually, letting their powers dance in small sparks, water streams, or flickers of flame. Kael kept his gaze forward, his dark hair brushing his eyes in the wind. He didn't speak. He couldn't. This was too important.

Memories of his parents surged into his mind. They had been Ascendants too—strong, respected, heroes to many. And yet, the portals had taken them. Kael had been left alone, an orphan, surviving on his small monthly allowance from the government. He had trained every day since he could walk, imagining himself defeating monsters, imagining himself standing where they could not. And now… now it was real.

The arena loomed ahead: a giant structure of black stone etched with glowing runes, remnants of old magic, and carvings of legendary Ascendants. The gates of the arena opened with a deep rumble, revealing the massive circular floor inside. Hundreds of students had already assembled, forming lines according to age and rank. Kael's stomach tightened.

A booming voice echoed across the arena. "Today, you will awaken! Step forward when your name is called!"

Kael's turn wouldn't come for a few minutes, but he stepped into the inner circle anyway. His senses heightened. The air itself thrummed with energy, and Kael could feel it vibrating through his body, through the ground, through his very soul. He clenched his fists, summoning every ounce of willpower he had, focusing on one thought: I will become the strongest. I will end every portal. I will survive.

Other students moved forward. Fire erupted in small jets from a girl's hands, lightning crackled from a boy's fingers, and a faint stream of water bent to another student's will. Kael watched silently, noting each display. Some were spectacular, some weak. But all were ordinary. Ordinary powers he had dreamed of surpassing.

Finally, the announcer's gaze fell on him. "Kael Varyn!"

He stepped forward, heart hammering so hard it felt like it could burst through his chest. The center of the arena was marked by a glowing circle etched in silver runes. As he stepped onto it, the energy around him shifted. It was heavier, darker, alive. Kael closed his eyes, focusing inward, reaching for the pulse he had felt in his dreams for so long.

Then it surged.

Not fire. Not lightning. Not water. Something else. Dark energy, raw and pulsing, twisted within him like a living storm. Kael's eyes snapped open, and the world seemed to react. Whispers rose from the crowd, eyes widened, gasps echoed.

The energy coiled around him, whipping outward, a visible force of blue-black light that flickered like lightning and burned like fire at the same time. Some weaker students stumbled backward, shielding their eyes. Teachers leaned forward, murmuring among themselves.

Drex, standing at the edge of the arena, frowned. "What… is that?" he muttered, his voice barely audible over the hum of power.

Kael's heart leapt. This was it. This was his power. His broken, unique, unstoppable power. It was unstable—but he could feel it. He could control it, even if only slightly. His hands glowed faintly, energy lashing out in small arcs, dancing across the floor.

"It's… different," whispered a teacher from the balcony, eyes wide. "I've never seen anything like this in decades…"

Kael smiled, though it was a strange, almost dangerous smile. This was more than he had imagined. This was the beginning.

The announcer tried to regain control, but the energy crackled violently. "Contain it!" he barked.

Kael forced himself to calm. The raw energy inside him pulsed, twisting like a living thing. Slowly, he drew it inward, absorbing the force into himself. The light dimmed, coiling around him like a shadow of power contained.

When he finally opened his eyes, the crowd stared in awe—and Drex's expression darkened. The faint envy in his gaze was unmistakable. Kael had awakened something no one else had. Something dangerous.

"Power," Kael whispered under his breath, "isn't given. It's taken. And I'll take enough to end them all."

Behind him, the arena buzzed with whispers: "Impossible… it's not a normal awakening…"

Kael turned, glancing at the distant city wall, where faint signs of old portals could still be seen. He felt the weight of everything—the world, the monsters, the legacy of his parents. And for the first time, he didn't feel small.

He felt… unstoppable.
