The moment she stepped out into the corridor, she moved on her own — slower, quieter, more aware. Her breathing was controlled, her steps lighter. Not perfect… but better.
She stopped in front of a fork in the hallway.
Left — darkness.
Right — faint candlelight.
Aurora: "Which one is a trap?"
she muttered under her breath.
Lucius: "Both."
Aurora flinched.
Aurora: "God—"
She turned sharply.
Aurora: "Can you stop doing that?"
Lucius leaned casually against the wall behind her, arms crossed.
Lucius: "Announcing myself would defeat the purpose."
Aurora: "And what is the purpose?"
she shot back.
Aurora: "Watching me struggle?"
His lips curved slightly.
Lucius: "Observing how long it takes you to stop asking useless questions."
Aurora rolled her eyes, but her heart was still racing.
Aurora: "Fine. Then answer a useful one. Which way?"
Lucius glanced at the two paths, then back at her.
Lucius: "Which one would you choose?"
Aurora: "That's not an answer."
Lucius: "It is,"
he said calmly.
Lucius: "Your decision matters more than the direction."
Aurora stared at him for a moment, frustrated… then exhaled slowly.
Aurora: "Right,"
she said finally.
Aurora: "Light usually means something… or someone."
Lucius tilted his head.
Lucius: "Or bait."
Aurora: "…I'm still going right."
Lucius: "Good,"
he said, pushing off the wall.
Lucius: "At least you're consistent."
The corridor opened into a long chamber lined with tall, narrow windows. Moonlight poured through them in thin beams, cutting through the darkness like blades. Dust floated in the air, glowing faintly as it passed through the light.
Aurora stepped inside carefully.
Aurora: "This place feels different…"
Lucius didn't respond immediately. His eyes scanned the room, slower now, more
focused.
Lucius: "Because it is,"
he said after a moment.
Lucius: "Different — Quieter."
Aurora frowned.
Aurora: "Isn't that a good thing?"
Lucius: "No."
That single word made her chest tighten.
Before she could ask anything else, a soft sound echoed from the far end of the room.
A whisper.
Aurora froze.
Aurora: "Did you hear that?"
Lucius didn't move.
Lucius: "Yes."
Aurora: "…And?"
Lucius: "And you're going to figure out what it is."
Aurora stared at him.
Aurora: "You're joking."
Lucius: "I rarely do."
She hesitated, then forced herself forward. Each step felt heavier than the last. The whisper came again — faint, broken… almost like someone trying to speak through water.
Echo: "…help…"
Aurora stopped.
Aurora: "That sounded like—"
Lucius: "A trap,"
Lucius said immediately.
She turned to him.
Aurora: "Or someone who needs help."
Lucius: "Those are not mutually exclusive."
Aurora clenched her jaw.
Aurora: "I'm not just going to ignore it."
Lucius watched her for a long moment. Then—
Lucius: "Then don't."
She blinked.
Aurora: "That's it?"
Lucius: "I didn't say stop,"
he replied.
Lucius: "I said understand the risk."
Aurora exhaled slowly… then kept walking.
At the end of the chamber, she found a narrow doorway half-hidden behind a torn curtain. The whisper was louder now.
Echo: "…please…"
Aurora pushed the curtain aside.
Inside was a small room. Bare. Cold.
And empty.
She frowned.
Aurora: "There's no one here…"
The whisper stopped.
Silence.
Then—
The door slammed shut behind her.
Aurora spun around.
Aurora: "Lucius?"
No answer.
Her pulse spiked.
Aurora: "Lucius, this isn't funny!"
The air shifted.
Something moved behind her.
Slowly… she turned.
For a split second, she saw it — a shape in the corner. Tall. Twisted. Not human.
Then it was gone.
Aurora stumbled back, hitting the wall.
Aurora: "Okay… okay…"
she whispered.
Aurora: "Think. Think."
The room felt smaller. Tighter. Like it was closing in.
A voice echoed — not from outside… but inside the room.
Voice: "Why did you come?"
Aurora froze.
Aurora: "Who said that?"
Voice: "Why… did you come?"
Her throat tightened.
Aurora: "I heard someone asking for help."
A pause.
Then—
Voice: "That was you."
Aurora's breath caught.
Aurora: "What?"
Voice: "You wanted a reason."
The shadows shifted again.
Voice: "You wanted to feel needed."
Aurora: "That's not—"
Voice: "You wanted to believe you had control."
Aurora: "Stop."
The voice grew sharper.
Voice: "You walked into a trap… because you chose to."
Aurora clenched her fists.
Aurora: "I said stop!"
Silence.
Then the door creaked open behind her.
Light spilled into the room.
Lucius stood there.
Aurora pushed past him immediately.
Aurora: "What the hell was that?"
Lucius didn't answer right away. He looked into the room, then back at her.
Lucius: "You tell me."
Aurora: "No,"
she snapped.
Aurora: "You knew. You let me go in there."
Lucius: "Yes."
Her eyes widened.
Aurora: "Why?"
Lucius: "Because you needed to see it."
Aurora: "See what?"
Lucius: "That not everything here is hunting your body,"
he said quietly.
Lucius: "Some things hunt your mind."
Aurora shook her head, still breathing hard.
Aurora: "That voice… it knew what I was thinking."
Lucius nodded.
Lucius: "Of course it did."
Aurora: "That's not normal."
Lucius: "Neither is this place."
She turned away, running a hand through her hair.
Aurora: "So what, I'm just supposed to walk into psychological traps now?"
Lucius stepped closer.
Lucius: "No. You're supposed to recognize them before they close."
Aurora let out a bitter laugh.
Aurora: "Yeah, I'll get right on that."
A soft voice cut through the tension.
Seraphina: "You did better than most."
Both of them turned.
Seraphina stood at the far end of the hall, watching them.
Aurora frowned.
Aurora: "Better? I walked straight into it."
Seraphina: "And walked out,"
Seraphina replied.
Aurora crossed her arms.
Aurora: "Barely."
Seraphina tilted her head.
Seraphina: "Barely is still survival."
Lucius glanced at Aurora.
Lucius: "And survival is all that matters here."
Aurora looked between them, frustration and realization mixing in her chest.
Aurora: "So everything is a test,"
she said slowly.
Aurora: "Every room. Every voice. Every shadow."
Lucius: "Yes,"
Aurora: "And you're not going to help me."
Lucius: "I already am."
She scoffed.
Aurora: "By throwing me into traps?"
Lucius: "By letting you learn."
Aurora went quiet.
For a moment, none of them spoke.
Then she exhaled slowly.
Aurora: "…Next time,i'm choosing the darker hallway."
Lucius smirked.
Seraphina's faint smile flickered.
Seraphina: "That is where the real answers are."
Aurora glanced down the corridor ahead. The shadows there seemed deeper now. Less like fear… more like a challenge.
Aurora: "Then let's go,"
And this time— She stepped forward first.
