Chapter 2 - Chapter :2

The Shadow of the Soul Forest

The atmosphere of the Soul Forest was thick with the scent of ancient moss and the metallic tang of dried blood. For ordinary cultivators, this place was a labyrinth of death, a realm where the laws of nature bent to the will of the wandering spirits. But for Kinmu, the forest now felt like a playground. The overwhelming power of the Martial Realm spirit that had merged with his own soul vibrated through his veins like an untamed storm.

As he walked, his footsteps were light, barely disturbing the charcoal-colored leaves on the forest floor. Behind him, the altar of the Sword Emperor lay in ruins, a silent testament to the brief but cataclysmic battle that had just taken place. Kinmu paused, looking at the silver Soul Ring on his finger. With a thought, his consciousness entered the ring's pocket dimension.

"Incredible..." he breathed.

Inside the ring were mountains of high-grade spirit stones, glowing with a serene azure light. There were weapon racks holding blades that hummed with sentient energy, and medicinal cauldrons that could brew pills capable of extending a mortal's life by centuries. But what caught his eye were two ancient jade slips: the Heavenly Sword Techniques. Even without opening them, the sheer sword intent radiating from the scrolls made Kinmu's skin prickle.

"With this," Kinmu whispered, his eyes hardening into flint, "not even the Clan Leader will be able to stand in my way."

He began his trek toward the forest's exit. However, the Soul Forest did not let its prey go easily. From the gnarled roots of the 'Wailing Oaks,' dozens of translucent figures began to emerge. These were the wandering souls—warriors who had died in the forest over the last millennium, their minds consumed by hunger and madness.

They hissed, their hollow eyes locking onto Kinmu's vibrant life force. A massive spirit, once a General in a long-forgotten war, raised a spectral axe and lunged.

Kinmu didn't even flinch. He didn't draw the physical sword from his ring. Instead, he simply released a burst of his internal aura.

BOOM!

The golden energy erupted from his body like a shockwave. The ground cracked for ten yards in every direction. The wandering souls didn't even have time to scream; the moment the golden light touched their ethereal forms, they evaporated into nothingness. The pressure was so immense that the thick fog of the forest was blown back, revealing a clear path to the sunlight above.

"My body is still too weak," Kinmu muttered, feeling a slight ache in his chest. "Even though the spirit within me is that of a Martial Sovereign, this physical shell is still just a teenager's. I need to stabilize this energy before it tears me apart from the inside."

He found a small, secluded cave near the edge of the forest and sat in a meditative posture. He began to circulate the energy according to the basic 'Heavenly Breath' method he had just inherited from the spirit's memories. In the past, this process would have taken months to show results. But now?

In less than a minute, a crisp crack echoed inside his mind.

Martial Realm... breakthrough!

Samurai Realm... breakthrough!

He had jumped an entire cultivation tier in the time it took to draw a single breath. Kinmu opened his eyes, which now held a faint, golden ring around the pupils. He felt a thousand times more powerful than he had just moments ago. His senses were so sharp that he could hear the heartbeat of a bird five miles away.

"Now," he said, standing up and brushing the dust off his tattered robes. "It's time to see who is waiting for me outside."

As he stepped out of the Soul Forest's boundary, the oppressive gloom was replaced by the bright, harsh light of the afternoon sun. He was standing on a rocky plateau that overlooked a vast, green valley. But the peace was short-lived.

"Who goes there?" a voice barked.

Kinmu turned to see a group of warriors dressed in dark crimson armor. Leading them was a man with a scarred face and a sneer that reminded Kinmu of Nabu. This was Jiang, a local warlord known for his ruthlessness. He patrolled these borders, taxing—or killing—anyone who dared to enter or leave the "restricted" zones.

Jiang looked at Kinmu's messy hair and blood-stained clothes. "A brat coming out of the Soul Forest? You're either a ghost or a very lucky thief. State your name and hand over that ring on your finger, and I might let you crawl away with your life."

Kinmu looked at the man as if he were an insect. "You're standing in my way. Move."

The warriors behind Jiang gasped. No one spoke to their leader like that. Jiang's face turned a deep shade of purple. "You little piece of trash! Do you know who I am? I am a master of the peak Martial Realm! I could crush your skull with one hand!"

"You talk too much," Kinmu said calmly.

Jiang roared and drew a heavy broadsword. He lunged forward, his blade glowing with a dull red energy. To an ordinary observer, his movement was a blur of lethal speed. But to Kinmu, it looked as if Jiang was moving through honey.

Kinmu didn't draw a weapon. As the broadsword came down toward his head, he simply stepped an inch to the left. The blade whistled past his ear, slamming into the ground and shattering the rock.

Before Jiang could recover, Kinmu flicked his finger against the side of the broadsword.

CLANG!

The heavy steel blade snapped like a dry twig. Jiang stumbled back, staring at the hilt in his hand with wide, disbelieving eyes. "What... what kind of monster are you?"

"I'm the person you shouldn't have talked to," Kinmu replied.

Suddenly, a movement in the bushes caught Kinmu's attention. A girl with flowing black hair and bright, intelligent eyes stumbled into the clearing. She looked exhausted, as if she had been running for hours. Her name was Lu Yan, a daughter of a nearby noble house.

She stopped dead in her tracks, looking at the broken sword in Jiang's hand and then at the calm, mysterious youth standing before him.

"Help... please," she gasped, before collapsing toward the ground.

Kinmu moved instinctively. In a flash of golden light, he appeared beside her, catching her before she hit the stones. As his hands touched her, he felt a strange resonance in his Soul Ring.

Jiang, seeing his chance while Kinmu was distracted, pulled out a hidden dagger. "Die, you arrogant brat!"

Kinmu didn't even look back. He simply waved his free hand behind him. A blade of pure wind sliced through the air, shearing the top off a nearby boulder and sending a shockwave that knocked Jiang and his men off their feet.

"I have business with this girl," Kinmu said, his voice cold and echoing. "If you value your lives, disappear before I decide to stop being merciful."

Jiang didn't need to be told twice. Scrambling to his feet, he and his men fled into the woods, leaving behind their pride and their broken weapons.

Kinmu looked down at Lu Yan. She was beautiful, but her aura was chaotic. Something was wrong with her. But more importantly, she was his first link to the world he had been cast out of.

"The game has just begun," Kinmu whispered to the wind.

The Dance of the Iron Blade

As Lu Yan slowly opened her eyes, she found herself cradled in the arms of a young man whose presence felt as vast as the ocean. The faint golden glow in Kinmu's eyes was still receding, giving him an otherworldly, predatory look. Startled, Lu Yan scrambled to her feet, her breath coming in ragged hitches as she tried to process what had just happened.

"Who... who are you? And where is Jiang?" Lu Yan asked, her voice trembling like a leaf in the wind.

Kinmu stood up calmly, brushing the dust from his tattered robes with a nonchalance that bordered on arrogance. To him, defeating a squad of armed warriors was no longer a feat; it was a mere chore.

"Jiang and his curs have fled to save their miserable lives," Kinmu replied, his tone flat and emotionless. "But they will return. Cowards always prefer to strike in packs, hoping that numbers can compensate for their lack of soul."

Lu Yan stared at him in disbelief. She knew Jiang was a notorious warrior in these parts, a man whose strength forced many to bow. Yet, this unknown youth had dismantled his pride with a single flick of his fingers.

"My name is Lu Yan," she introduced herself, trying to regain her composure. "I am the daughter of the Lord of the Jade Valley. Jiang was hunting me because he wants to steal an ancestral map belonging to my family. I owe you my life... but who are you? I have never felt an aura like yours before. It feels... ancient."

Kinmu looked toward the horizon, where the purple mists of the Soul Forest were finally fading. "My name is Kinmu. Once, I was the joke of the realm—a 'trash' disciple with no future. But today... today I am the master of my own shadow."

Just then, the sound of rhythmic thumping and the neighing of warhorses echoed through the trees. Kinmu's intuition was correct. Jiang had returned, but he wasn't alone. He was accompanied by nearly fifty elite warriors and his older brother, Taiga, a renowned 'Samurai Realm' master of the Iron Blood Sect.

"There! That's the brat!" Jiang screamed, pointing a shaky finger. His face was still bruised from his earlier encounter. "Brother, that little monster broke my sword! Burn him alive! Tear him apart!"

Taiga dismounted from his massive black stallion. He carried a broad, jagged heavy-sword on his back. Looking at Kinmu's disheveled hair and blood-stained clothes, he let out a guttural laugh.

"A mere child? You were humiliated by a child, Jiang? Pathetic," Taiga growled. He turned to Kinmu, his eyes narrow. "Boy, if you hand over the girl now and crawl to my brother's feet to beg for mercy, I might grant you a quick death. Otherwise, I will crush every bone in your body one by one."

Lu Yan gripped Kinmu's sleeve, her face pale. "Kinmu, we have to run! Taiga is a Samurai Realm master. You can't fight him!"

Kinmu smiled. It wasn't a smile of joy, but one of pure, icy contempt. "Samurai Realm? In my eyes, he is nothing but an ant trying to challenge a mountain."

Slowly, Kinmu reached into his Soul Ring and drew the Samurai Realm Steel Sword he had acquired in the forest. The moment the blade appeared, the atmospheric pressure shifted violently. The surrounding trees groaned under the weight of his sword intent.

"What! That blade... that isn't a normal weapon!" Taiga shouted, his instincts screaming at him to retreat. He could feel a terrifying spirit dwelling within that steel.

"Prepare yourself," Kinmu said softly. He took a single step forward.

Taiga roared, swinging his massive broadsword with enough force to shatter boulders. To the soldiers, it was a blur of lethal power. But to Kinmu, it was slow, clumsy, and full of openings. As the heavy blade came down toward his head, Kinmu didn't dodge. He simply rotated his wrist, meeting Taiga's blade with his own.

CRACK!

There was no epic struggle. The moment Kinmu's sword aura touched Taiga's weapon, the heavy steel shattered like glass. Taiga was sent flying twenty feet backward, a deep gash appearing across his chest as the pressure alone tore through his armor.

"Impossible! I am a Samurai Realm master!" Taiga coughed, blood bubbling from his mouth. "How can a brat like you overpower me?"

Kinmu walked toward him slowly, the tip of his sword trailing on the ground, leaving a glowing furrow in the earth. "Power does not lie in titles, Taiga. It lies in the union of the soul and the blade. You are merely an arrogant butcher."

The remaining soldiers dropped their weapons and fled into the woods, terrified by the display of god-like strength. Jiang had already vanished. Kinmu placed the tip of his sword at Taiga's throat.

"I will let you live today. Go back and tell everyone: Kinmu has returned. And anyone who dares to look at my father with ill intent will find their way to the underworld sooner than they think."

Taiga scrambled away, trembling with fear. Lu Yan stood frozen, watching the boy who had just rewritten the laws of power in her world.

"Kinmu... are you even human?" she whispered.

Kinmu sheathed his blade back into the Soul Ring. "I am a man who has come to collect what is owed to him. Come, this place is no longer safe. I will escort you home."

Under the moonlight, Kinmu's shadow stretched long and formidable. They moved into the forest, heading toward a future where Kinmu would be the nightmare of his enemies.
